Remaining Crackdown Achievements determined by observation
Realtime Worlds will be watching next week as you hit Crackdown's Pacific City for the first time, and for the weeks following. Shipping with only 900 Gamerscore points, the developer will decide how to implement the remaining 100 points by observing how players are interacting with their virtual sandbox. It's not like Realtime has installed cameras into the game world; no, the developer will apparently gather most of its information by monitoring the most popular Achievements. If players are focused on unlocking the juggling Achievements, Realtime would likely up the ante with a new juggling-based challenge. But activities without existing Achievement tie-ins -- like building towers out of stacked objects -- might be harder for Realtime to observe (unless there's an internal stat-tracker we're not aware of...).

It's how they established their Achievements before. They found a lot of fun juggling people in midair with explosives, and turned it into an Achievement.
Frankly, that's how ALL Achievements should be determined.

I'm sure there are stat tracking mechanisms that you don't know about.
Just take a look at a bunch of Valve games to get an idea of the sort of stats that are in their games.

How will Realtime Worlds monitor what players are doing? Simple. YouTube.
They'd just have to look for the highest rated / most popular videos and base achievements around those activities.

I like the idea of neat little achievement ideas. It is cooler than getting one for completing level 3 on X difficulty. Achievements like "blow up 9 enemies with one grenade" or "20 dead man leapfrog" where you kill a guy with a dead body, then use that guys dead body to kill another one with it and so on in X amount of time. That is a dumb idea, but it illustrates my idea. They could be worth small amounts, but it would give you ideas of fun things to try to pull off.

maybe now we can get achievements that people can actually get... like something other than being #1 in the world...

I can't stop playing this demo. Even as limited as it is, I keep finding new ways to do things. I can wait to get my hands on it next Tuesday.

Beat me to it. That would be my first instinct as well. Judging by the most popular Crackdown videos from the demo it seems massive explosions are the way to go. How about an achievement for getting 20 vehicles in the air at once?

"I can't stop playing this demo."
Me, too. I play it everyday. I can't wait for the release. I was actually pretty surprised that OXM only gave it a 7.
JJ @ Feb 14th 2007 12:51AM
Its OXM 187... not exactly the bastion of great Xbox coverage =)
dsub @ Feb 14th 2007 12:54AM
yea. Team XBOX and 1up gave it 9/10. IGN gave it an 8/10. I can understand the shortcomings that they discuss, but some reviews I don't agree with.
I also found it funny that OXM gave it 7/10, but OXM UK gave it 9/10. Regardless, the 20th can't come soon enough. This demo totally took me by surprise and I can't wait for the full version.

Now, aside from monitoring achievements, who wants to bet they'll have a few guys playing online co-op to see what people want to do?
Kritz @ Feb 14th 2007 5:26AM
I question why this hasn't been done sooner. What a brilliant idea. I just hope there's a few crazy, off the wall achievements along the same line as "Jump off the agency tower into water" or what-ever that one was.
Thing is, I'm not too interested in explosions / driving. I'd rather jump and kick. I hope that Realtime won't forget about all the other cool skills when they make the few extra awards.

I'd like to see a "Killed boss with your co-op partner's dead body" achievement.

I got the game 5 days before the street date to review. I gave it a 8 out of 10 the game is just plain fun. I spent a ton of time just collecting orbs. It is well worth the $60 but don't just buy it for the Halo 3 demo thats just dumb.
