Mercedes-Benz gas, brakes and dips into Second Life
Joining Toyota in the continuing trend of setting up shop in Second Life is Germany's own Mercedes-Benz. This Tuesday will see the launch of not just a showroom for the luxury cars, but an entire island. The vehicles themselves aren't ready for a test drive just yet, but a track will be available for when that feature rolls out. Which is a shame, really, as we were already planning our Second Life adventure in ghost riding.
Those who stop by for the grand opening can enjoy not only an in-game concert but some free swag as well. Anyone who visits can pick up a free Formula 1 racing suit and helmet, which will quickly be utilized in the red light district in acts that we could not possibly begin to describe here.

The same could be said about The Sims, JJC.
Although I don't play Second Life, I can see why it would be addicting.

I don't see how marketing to the 200k or so Second Life users justifies the effort. Are even 10 of the 200k users in the market for a new Benz? It boggles.

i thought the sims was lame too. my gf thought it was great though. i dont think she got past building a house. she just enjoyed making the house 'cute' and filling it with the right things...

What's great about SL? I guess it's how open-ended the "game" is. Literally, anything can be done in this virtual world.
Perhaps the single greatest item in the game is this:

A fully-functional Varia Suit with eight different beams, missiles, Morph Ball and bombs, etc.
But, there are other video game-based items and avatars, too. Such as the Twilight Princess swords and shields, Goemon Impact, Meta-Knight, Sonic's rings, a rideable Kuribo's Shoe, etc.

People need to stop wasting their lives on Second Life and get a job so they can buy a REAL Benz.
Jono Stars @ Feb 15th 2007 3:33PM
people still play this?

Actually SL has over 3 million accounts right now (and about 300k that have logged in for more than an hour in the past month) with around 10-25k users online at a given time. Some people happen to make a living out of SL (Anshe Chung is a German who has about 250,000USD worth in SL and has an office of workers in China to help run her real estate business in SL). Also IBM has an island or two in SL that they use for research and virtual meetings. This isn't a game to everyone.
