Actually, I think the poor kid went crazy after playing Left Behind. It enraged him against the video game industry so he got rid of all his games. But then the violent tendacies built up and one day, while waiting in a long line at the Orange Julius... he just snapped.

I'm amused by the "did not take any computers or videogames" comment in the article. What else didn't they find? Drugs, S&M gear, energy drinks, bad report cards?

I understand that they kind of have to put that in there 'cause games are such a popular scapegoat these days, but it's kind of funny/sad that it's come to that.

I live in Salt Lake and a friend's wife was working in one of the stores where people were killed. Luckily, she made it to the stock room safely and is okay.

One of the ladies that was killed was there to meet her husband to buy wedding rings. They couldn't afford them when they were married four years earlier. Terrible tragedy for everyone involved.

At any rate, I just knew the whole video game angle would come out sooner rather than later. Good to know that's not part of the killer's the motive yet.

Because, obviously, religion could have NOTHING to do with it. If you hadn't said anything, I might have assumed he was Mormon or something. I'm sure there's lots of Mormons in Bosnia.

While the motive may not be religion, it cannot just simply be discounted. And since we're so sure that it wasn't games, would someone else like to mention what might be left?

Being from that part of Europe, I know several people who the wars have affected in different ways... some for the worse.

Families were torn apart, brothers turned into enemies, and the love and care that children required to develop all but disappeared.

Don't blame games, because they are not the reason he went on this rampage. Blame his past experiences, and his parent's inability to deal with being ripped from their home and dropped in the middle of a foreign country.

Or maybe the kid was just a whack job.

Not trying to incite anything but:

In order to try to understand what happened shouldnt we be considering all aspects of his life? From his survival of the Bosnian tragedies to his religion? Maybe a video game blog isnt the best place for this type of discussion, but to be fair we do need to consider everything related to this person.

What happens if it turns out he did do this based on his religion? What happens if he did this only because of the trauma he faced as a child?

Anyway my heart goes out to the families that lost their loved ones. I hope those that were injured recover quickly.

Why is it always GTA? You can shoot people in a mall in Postal 2 also. I notice that it's always GTA, GTA, GTA... or Doom. Why don't games like Postal 2 or the game the KKK made "Ethnic Cleansing" ever cause murder?

You know I blame Super Mario for my illusion that whenever I kill someone I get a coin, and if I don't get a coin, I go to the police and insist I get my coin.

Oh, I see that we struck a nerve by mentioning the LDS. Perhaps living in SLC did have an effect on him because he's Muslim. I find that to be VERY on topic, James. That would put video games in the clear. Feel free to delete this comment (as you most certainly will) but don't think our comments "off topic" just because it bothers YOU. Whatever.

I was trying to find a passage in the Koran the other day and stumbled across an analysis of the "Religion of Peace" origin. Apparently it's a mistranslation that has been incorrectly promoted by some Muslims, Islam actually means "Religion of Submission" because the overreaching philosophy of the religion is to submit to Gods will.

Since it's fun to point fingers I would like to put in a vote for it being his parents fault. Whatever the problem really was it is his parent responsibility to teach the guy what is acceptable in society and how to deal with problems that seem overwhelming.

If they didn't teach him those lessons then they should be put in jail for neglect, and if they taught him to be violent then they should be jailed as accomplices.

Splat gets the award for knowing nothing about world religions. Islam was "invented" closest to the dark ages (though not in them), Christianity was "invented" shortly after the ascention of Christ (by like a week), Protestantism was "invented" by Martin Luther in the Renaissance, Judaism, Shintoism, Taoism were all invented THOUSANDS of years before any of that.

Here's your award. Its a dunce cap.

Splat....

You are an idiot. The Dark Ages were 1,500 years ago and we have recording of religious activity since the dawn of history.

Anyway...I am also from SLC. Yes...many here were already saying "videogames did it!"....until his name was released that is.

Now, all of a sudden, he's a terrorist or a kid with post traumatic stress disorder.

No one wants to wait for the facts. No one wants to admit they're assumptions were wrong after they come out.

It's just more fun to point fingers at something we don't like (games, religions, other countries).

Do people ever really grow up?

But what if it did? We still dont know all of the facts yet, and what if his religion was part of what he did.

Mind you i would still be asking the question if he was catholic, christian, bhuddist, mormon or agnostic. In order for us to rule it out as a possibility, we have a duty to ask those questions.

Rahabib,

No disrespect, but you don't know that anymore than the biggots KNOW that it DID have something to do with his actions.

I actually applaud the media for keeping games and religion out of their reports altogether if they have no evidence of it yet.

But don't worry....IF he did do this in the name of his religion, anyone worth a DAMN will understand that it is merely a reflection of his poor interpretation of his religion rather than a reflection on the religion itself.

Trust me. I live in Utah. I understand more than most what happens when people misinterpret their religion.

Come to think of it, it is those misinterpretations that lead people to point fingers at games and religions in the first place....rather than the individual who should be SOLELY responsible for his/her actions.

When we're looking for motives why can't we discuss this scumbags religion? Why won't the liberal media talk about the potential of this being a terrorist attack by a muslim illegal alien? If this guy looked like Timothy Mcveigh they'd be all over him, but since he's a "bosnian refugee" he's untouchable. Total bullshit. Wouldn't a mall be the perfect terrorist target for a suicide bomber or suicide shooter? I'm surprised this isn't happening more often.
