I really, really hate the Wii Points system. 700 points left over, but to get Streets of Rage I'd need to add 1,000 more points, and though I suppose I'd spend those leftover points at a later date, it still irritates me to no end that I can't simply buy the exact amount of points I need or (even better) just buy the games without the ridiculous points.

I'm just nitpicking here, but wasn't Donkey Kong Country 32-bit?

I remember when it was released, and Nintendo was making all kinds of comments about how it doesn't require an add-on like "certain competitors" (as if there was more than one).

I think the 32-bit comment comes from the fact that the pre-rendered art that was made into sprites was supposed to look better than the graphics offered by their 32-bit competitors.

@#7: Megabit in this case referring to the amount of space taken up by the cartridge ROM.

'32 bit' makes reference to the system's CPU.

Damn! This is the best line-up yet. I was all about Streets of Rage in my younger years. I guess I can understand Nintendo's stance on purity (even though it's more likely laziness), but some online co-op would be pretty nice.

Looks like I'm gonna be spendin' some Wii Points today. Points make it seem like I'm not actually spending money!

@ 9 & 11 - One of the main reasons for the minimum purchase is the credit card companies. Every time you use a credit card to purchase any item, it costs the seller about $.10 plus an additional percentage of the sale price (generally between 1-2%). So when Nintendo sells you $10 of Wii points (1,000), the company actually pockets about $9.70. If they sold you $1 of Wii points (100), then they would get $.88. 10 100 points sales equals $8.80 versus the 1 1,000 point sale of $9.70. Those cents quickly add up when you start rolling it up to the millions of transactions. Just ask the credit card companies who collected $30B in 2005 in just these fees alone. So if you want to blame someone, you can start with Visa, Mastercard, and American Express.

For more information on this 'interchange fee', you can check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interchange_fee

Dopple Boppler, I totally agree. And I blame Microsoft for starting it.

It would be far simplier to just buy what you what directly for the exact price, rather than having to buy points to buy something, and then not have enough points to buy everything you want. Then you buy more points, that simply sit there, until you buy something again.

Could you just imagine if everything worked that way?

Welcome to Best Buy! Are you here to redeem your points? If you need more points, they're available at checkout.

Basically these services are taking your money up front. I'd much rather our politicians concentrate on changing THAT practice rather than attack the ratings system.

I remember Nintendo's claims of ACM Technology(TM) used in DK Country. Their Advanced Computer Modeling basically boiled down to using prerendered 2D sprites of 3D models.

Not as lame as Blast Processing, but close.

They did a side by side of DKC and that Knuckles 32x game as part of their marketing campaign, and the graphcis on DKC did in fact look better. Basically the claim was that the SNES with no addon was still better than even the Genesis with the 32x. Untrue from a performance standpoint, but (regretfully) as an owner of a 32x, the game lineup was utter horse crap.

Maybe that's how they'll sell old Nintendo Power

Multiple issues for $1.00

You do realize the points system is an incentive to buy more than you need to, its "oh, i only want Super Mario Bros, but its a minimum of 1000 points, hey, may as well buy Ice Climber as well"

People can complain all they want about Wii Points, but I promise, those of you that don't have a 360, that the Wii Points system is 10 times better than MS. MS points have such a jacked conversion system, that you will ALWAYS give away money.
At least Nintendo made the conversion straight forward: 1 point=$0.01
You will always find a way to spend your points, and won't have "residual points" left over. Nintendo did it right, MS got this one wrong.

@30

That might be a while. Not that many people liked Zelda II. I can't see how anyone in their right mind would want to allocate gaming time to this title with what else is available. ;)

This "paying to borrow code to old games stuff" stuff kinda boggles my mind, though. We can argue all day about the pricing. But besides that there is the fact that playing an old game is taking away from your time to play new games.

I can't get through all my 360 games the way it is (mainly because I get sucked into online shooters, spending too much time on one game, too fun to put down). I couldn't imagine wanting to put down a new 360 game (most of which I get on Gamefly) to play an old anything, even if I missed it.

It is odd the difference in culture with 360 owners and Wii owners around re-releases of games. Certainly, the Wii has higher quality and quantity of old games, even considering the lack of additional features, especially online. But Wii owners seem more excited about VC games than Wii games right now, at times. 360 and PS3 gamers seem to just shrug meh at old stuff. I wonder why that is. I don't mean any negativity one way or the other, just am seriously curious. There is no way I'd rather play DKC or Link to the Past, even though they are both in my top ten ALL TIME for games, than even Saint's Row or Trauma Center or Motorstorm, relatively meh current gen titles.

@33 Earl

You are an idiot if you were serious. Nintendo's conversion system matches US currency value making it more convenient for American customers to determine prices. That is all you should have said. Everything else makes you look like a moron. You won't give away money or always spend more with the MS system. That is a dumb thing to say.

With each system, you spend different amounts of money for different products. I mean, I understand you are a mindless Nintendo fanboy, but don't make up arguments that don't hold any water and try to pass them off as fact.

Jay (#37), Joystiq is an American site, so American content is most important here. Sometimes news for Europe, Australia, Japan, etc. is mentioned, but not always.

Wii Fanboy, however, always posts VC releases for North America, Europe/Australia, and Japan.

Since RARE is second party to Microsoft old Bill would have to decide the amount of flesh Nintendo would have to part for RARE IPs to appear on the vc.
