In case you missed it, GameDaily paid tribute to oldie-but-goodie retro games circa late 70s to mid 80s last week for Valentine's Day. The retrospective covers Dragon's Lair, Gauntlet, Asteroids, and Centipede to name a few and features interesting little factoids like this one on Pong: "The first Pong arcade machine was tested in two small California bars. Within a day, the game drew so much attention that people lined up outside the bars, waiting for them to open so they could play." How could people not line up for graphics that visceral!!?? Hit the link for the full old school skinny including a slew of most awesome classic commercials.
We love retro games

I love new iterations of classic game universes, like Mario, Zelda, MGS, Halo, etc. But I can't stand playing old games. If I've played them before and/or their graphics are badly outdated, I find the experience painful. You gotta give me something different, even if only the graphics and/or controls are different. So, I am both nostalgic and non-nostalgic. I appreciate old games for the fun they gave me, but don't want to go back and play them. It is like people who want to relive their highschool days or something.
But, I am a wee bit of a graphics whore.

Jake, I see what you mean. I gotta kinda disagree with you throwing Halo in their though. All of the other title's you mentioned are from way back in the 8-bit days and its' amazing to see how far they've come. Thinks have changed so much with those titles but the Halo universe is a bit different. I mean Halo 1 & 2 were a bit different but for the most part it boils down to a cool single-player campaign and a killer multi-player option. Halo 3 will be no different. Don't take this as me ripping on Halo because I love them both, but as far as those titles you listed, Halo kinda jumped out and slapped me in the face.

@3 yes ur right, halo isnt retro at all. but it became an instant classic. it DOES belong in the milestone achievements in video games if u ask me. the halo series has influenced almost every fps that came after it in some ways. i honestly belive halo set the bar so high, in terms of originality and taking familiar concepts and making them perfect, that few if any have gotten close to bungie's masterpiece.

It's a shame the levels in half of Halo: Combat Evolved were thrown together endless loops of hallways to force the game for the Xbox launch. I believe Bungie did set the bar with their skeletal kinetics physics engine they had been developing for years before Microsoft bought them.
