Nintendo's Koji Kondo joins Video Games Live lineup
If one plans to append adjectives to Nintendo's music composer, Koji Kondo, the word "legendary" makes for an obvious start. The Legend of Zelda, along with Star Fox and Mario, are just some of the properties Kondo has contributed to since joining Nintendo in 1984. Attendees of this year's Video Games Live concert will be pleased to learn that the man himself will be making an appearance and performing "one of his favorite melodies" on stage. Can't say we've heard that one -- could someone hum a few bars? The event, which brings GDC to a symphonic end, is being held at Nob Hill Masonic Auditorium, San Francisco on March 9 at 8PM. Other highlights in this year's show include Martin Leung with a new piano arrangement, an acoustic medley by original LucasArts composers (Monkey Island!), a Chris Kline Contra presentation and a performance by voice-over artist, Dee Baker.

Why does it have to always be so far away!? Can't they come to the east coast once in a while? Specifically, somewhere in upstate New York? More specifically, Rochester, New York?
Matters @ Feb 20th 2007 3:47PM
Wait how is that fair? New York area always gets cool shit like this too. What about.. You know.. The rest of America? We always get the shaft :P

Monkey Island??
Excuse me while I go clean myself up now.
Vegan @ Feb 20th 2007 4:13PM
Aw, hell.
I'll be in San Francisco the weekend BEFORE, for Wonder Con.
Why can't this be the same weekend...
Crono @ Feb 20th 2007 4:33PM
LOL, glad to see I'm not the only one slightly miffed about all the cool stuff happening in NY City or Souther California.
Kondo's work is really nice (duh)! I prefer his composition on original starfox for SNES than for any subsequent Starfox games.
Still, I place Nobuo Uematsu above Kondo as far as favorite japanese composers go.

nyeheheh. I've known about this concert event for a month now, and I have tickets sitting around, just waiting to be used. Its good to hear news about this, though.

Wait, just to make sure, you do know that San Francisco is Northern California, right?
Anyhow, has anyone actually been to one of these events? Do they draw well? Are they fun/worth the money? Just curious. I live in SF, and I consider myself a pretty avid gamer, but I'm on the fence with this.
Crono @ Feb 20th 2007 4:59PM
Sorry, I was thinking san diego, as thats about as southern cal as you can get.
Its still thousands of miles away from here, though.

Matters (#2), you're a dolt. There's a whole state that's not New York City, there is no 'New York Area'. If you are talking about the New York City Area, Rochester is quite a long way away.

;_;
I wish he'd come to atlanta or knoxville or something... they probably already came to atlana and I didn't know about it though ~_~
According to my audioscrobler, I like kondo way more than uematsu. I mean come on... most zelda soundtracks vs most final fantasy?

I got to attend this in Vancouver, Canada when it came up here. Unfortunately most of the Canadian shows got cancelled, citing low interest aside from Toronto. That aside, this was an incredible experience, with a full ochestra and wonderful vocals from a mens and womens sing etourage. It was a fantastic evening for geek-cred as well as just enjoying some of the music that many non gamers would miss out on because it's well, videogame music.

Just an FYI that we will be at Yale in CT on March 31st. Since NYC is SO close to New Haven, we invite you to come check out the show!

Becky, This is why us Upstaters hate Downstaters, and dolts like you. Rochester IS NOT NEW YORK CITY. New York does extend beyond the boundry of New York City.

I lived in NYC for 2 years and on Long Island for 4 years after that. I understand Rochester is not NYC. I am letting those - who asked for us to be on the east coast - know that we are going to be in CT and are close to the NYC area. I wasn't speaking about Rochester.
Thanks for your continued support! :)

Yo Everyone!,
Thanks for the comments.
To Ironside: Glad you liked the Vancouver show. We actually only had to move one Canadian show over two years ago (the Toronto date) which we ended up playing last year. We've also done two sold out shows in Edmonton (last month) and are doing two more in Calgary in November. We're also arranging a Montreal show and possibly others.
A complete listing of all of our shows past, present and future can be found here:
http://www.videogameslive.com/index.php?s=dates
You'll notice a couple of east coast dates including New Haven, CT with the Yale Symphony on the Yale campus next month.
I'm currently writing this from New Zealand where we'll be performing on Saturday.
Yo Dirk... if you want to find out more info you can check out some of our trailers at our website at videogameslive.com
Hope to see you in SF. I don't think you'll be disappointed and with the announcement we made today about Koji Kondo playing... it will be a pretty historic event for the game music world.
Thanks everyone! Let me know if you have any other questions. Will be more than happy to answer them.
Tommy
Rocketboy @ Feb 21st 2007 7:00AM
Becky..If you had actually read the posts, nobody was asking for it to be in NYC. They asking for something in New York State OTHER than NYC.
Ninja Stan @ Feb 21st 2007 12:37PM
I was fortunate enough to be able to perform in the two Edmonton shows as part of the choir. It was a heck of a lot of fun, and both Jack Wall and Tommy Tallarico were really cool.
I hope to actually SEE the show when it goes to Calgary in November. Even from the stage, it looks and sounds phenomenal. So much fun!
