EA resurrecting Wing Commander on Xbox 360?

With the exception of a Game Boy Advance port of Prophecy released in 2003, almost ten years have passed since the appearance of a new Wing Commander game. Space sim fans may have something else to thrust into their crosshairs this year with a game called "Wing Commander Arena" popping up on the ESRB database. The game, seemingly published by EA for the Xbox 360, is rated "E" for "fantasy violence."
Your own reaction may differ considerably from ours, but when we think "fantasy violence," we think "dogfights and space cats." Rampant speculation regarding the "Arena" subtitle might indicate a Wing Commander for Xbox Live Arcade, complete with multiplayer space combat, shiny HD graphics and gratuitous use of Mark Hamill (also rendered in HD). Unfortunately, since EA did not respond to a request for comment at the time of writing, such wonderful thoughts remain purely speculative for now.

I might buy an XBox 360 for that game.

I'm wondering why there is a ? next to it.

My guess is a Unicode error (or ASCII error... or whatever). My guess it should be a ™ or © or ® there (depending on how EA has Wing Commander "protected").

Multiplayer dogfight is great, but we wart a new Wing Commander. Bring back luck skywalker! We all know he don't die in the end of prophecy.

WHY WHY WHY is this going the the xbox instead of a PC where all good space/flight sims belong?
Oh, because it's going to be an arcade shooter. Silly me.

Where oh where is the Road Rash remake?!?! Seems like a no brainer to me.

#5 WC was always an arcade shooter...or...rather..not a space sim
I mean those things maneuevered not like a space ship, and not like a plane either..it was just a fun game...
I enjoyed WC I and II immensely including the expansions...after that I sort of lost interest

Man, I played the S*$& out of this game back on the PS1. It was one of the best games ever released on the platform.
I'd prefer to see them do a full-blown reimagining of it with the new technology, but I'll take an HD-ified version for now!! YEAH!!
And I agree with Mike, Road Rash would be so great to see on the New consoles. Bring it on EA!!
Next up? Baseball Stars and Tecmo Bowl Football!

I wish I were filthy rich so I could purchase ignored and otherwise highly underappreciated franchises and give them the proper respect they deserve. I'm glad there's a chance we may yet have a chance at seeing another Wing Commander III.
James @ Feb 22nd 2007 3:26AM
Wing Commander, hey I remember playing Wing Commander II! Thats the one with big space lions right?
shih-chieh @ Feb 22nd 2007 4:15AM
Awesome!!
I was hoping for the resurrection of Wing Commander just last week, and tada... here we are :)
I think EA should go back and "update" Wing Commander 3 and 4's game engines (keep the cinematics with Mark Hamill intact), then release both games over Xbox Live. When WC3/4 were released, video gaming was far less popular and accessible than it is today. So an update could be profitable. Maybe.

I would definetly buy anything for a new wing commander. At least if it is as good as the old ines. I still adore WIng Commander III, IV and Prophecy.
