So are they going to update the textures on the 360?

That 360 screen shot has some horribly blurred textures on that helicopter. They can double the resolution on those easily.

"Figboy,
rest assured, you probably don't want game ports from PS3 and 360 on your Wii. the Wii will thrive on purely original games that are easier to make and developed with the Wii in mind."

Problem is, the Wii just isn't very fun. Ok, Wii Sports is entertaining when with a group of rowdy and drunken friends, but outside of that, Twilight Princess bored me to tears (and i'm a big Zelda fan, but the games have been practically identical gameplay wise since they movied to 3D), and nothing on the horizon outside of Metroid Prime 3 and Super Smash Bros appeals to me. That's my main problem with the Wii. any multi-platform titles released on Wii i'll just get for my PS3 or 360, depending on what title feels better on what console.

"as for being burned by a game limited console...i'm afraid as it stands right now, we both may be getting the most painful burn of them all. the $600 kind...."

i don't feel burned at all concerning my PS3 purchase. i use pretty much all of it's functionality (the Wi Fi, Blu Ray, internet, backwards comp, etc), and there are some great exclusive first party titles coming to the system that justify the purchase for me:

Ninja Gaiden Sigma
Lair
Motorstorm
Heavenly Sword
Virtua Fighter 5 (which i picked up yesterday, and it is awesome)
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
LA Noire
MGS4
FFXIII
FFXIII Versus
Warhawk
Heavy Rain
White Knight Story

that's plenty to keep me satisfied, so i have buyers guilt or remorse for my PS3 purchase two weeks ago at all. as long as Sony is producing content (and i can't wait to see what Team Ico is cooking for the PS3), i'm good.

and i'll always balance it out with the quality 360 titles, and possibly a Wii later on.

correction: i meant to say that i don't have buyers remorse or guilt for my PS3 purchase.

i wish there was more content on the PS Store, but that's on it's way.

i also meant to add that so far, there haven't been any games outside of Nintendo branded ones that do the Wii any justice at all. to me, it's looking like a Gamecube repeat all over again. the only games worth having on the Wii will probably, as always, be Nintendo properties. properties that i've nearly grown out of in my 27 years on this planet.

Whoa, those last 20 or so comments...some sort of multiple personality mania going on up in there. Wasn't the new password system supposed to take care of this?

Anyway, since everyone's too busy arguing about exclusives and stuff to actually talk about the game at hand...I might as well mention that Mercenaries, while fun, is highly overrated...and definitely NOT a system seller. Therefore, a multiplatform release is a good news for everyone, so let's all put away the knives and sing kumbaya.

Posted at 3:17PM on Feb 22nd 2007 by ByteMe"

and this matters to someone who doesn't own the original Ninja Gaiden, or maybe never owned an X Box at all, how, exactly?

the simple fact of the matter is that the PS2 sold over 110 million units, and the orignal X Box sold 25 million units.

the point of this is that there are, at least 50 million or so Playstation 2 gamers that have never played Ninja Gaiden on the X Box (i'm not one of them, as i have played it, hence being excited that it's coming to a system that i actually play; my X Box is gathering dust).

there are millions of gamers that have never given it a try, due to whatever reasons (maybe not being able to afford multiple consoles or simple fanboyism), and now Ninja Gaiden has the opportunity to expand it's userbase.

also, why shouldn't i be excited about a game that is adding even more content to an already kickass title?

new weapons, moves, being able to play as Rachael, all worthy enchancements, and on top of that, we get that shiny next gen sheen on the visuals department (hard to believe, considering that the original Ninja Gaiden and Ninja Gaiden Black were gorgeous).

it seems to me that you are maybe a bitter X Box fan that is pissed that one of it's best games is coming to the Playstation audience.

if that's the case; don't be. all gamers should be able to play great games, regardless of platform.

Not my point and I agree with you.

But it's still not what I'd call "exclusive". Both the original and NGB are playable on the 360 already too. Thank goodness they got some of the good games BC.

ok this thread has officially gone bananas...

Figboy, yeah i bought the PS3 for Team Ico as well, and while VF5 is a good game, it is coming to 360 and (fingers crossed) could bring some more online goodness..

the whole original point of this thread is that what once was considered PS3 exclusive is quickly becoming multi-platform. while Lair and Motorstorm may never go to 360, what if Square Enix and Konami looked at all the success Capcom is having and decided to go to 360 as well? then your list shrinks considerably.

thats cool you use your PS3 for all its other uses, because in the games dept. it is losing ground every month.

yeah the wii is another issue entirely, but i'm positive that crippled wii versions of PS360 fare would NOT make it more 'FUN'. best bet for Wii is to have all these XBL arcade devs graduate to Wii retail games and make some original games that you could ONLY play on the Wii.

I laugh at the fanboys who so desperately clung to this title, one of the few remaining PS3 exclusives. At this rate, there won't be anything left by the end of the year. Good times for '360 owners!

Sony or Microsoft never claim any 3rd party game as exclusive, any deals are done behind closed doors and announced by the publisher.

Sony still maintains an arrogant "we don't pay for exclusives, they come to us" policy. the most they will do is help market certain games (tekken, mgs) which does offset a lot of costs, but its still not technically them paying for exclusive rights.

of course, while sony is helping them market the games they can't be on other systems. usually like around 6 mths, convenient how that works...

"ok this thread has officially gone bananas..."

as usually the case whenever the PS3 "loses" an exclusive.

"Figboy, yeah i bought the PS3 for Team Ico as well, and while VF5 is a good game, it is coming to 360 and (fingers crossed) could bring some more online goodness.."

true that it is coming to the 360, but it's available for me right *now*, and i actually just finished playing it a minute ago. the same arguments that 360 users have been saying to the numerous 360 games that are coming to the PS3 months late applies here.

as a PS3 owner only (my roommate has the 360), i'm getting the games as they come out for the system i've decided to support. i'm getting a 360 later this year (much later, probably), and then i'll worry about what games come out for what first, but for now, i'm just glad the PS3 is getting any games at all.

"the whole original point of this thread is that what once was considered PS3 exclusive is quickly becoming multi-platform. while Lair and Motorstorm may never go to 360, what if Square Enix and Konami looked at all the success Capcom is having and decided to go to 360 as well? then your list shrinks considerably."

thing is, there are plenty of first and second party PS3 titles that make it worth my while. unlike a lot of people, i don't just buy a gaming console for one game specifically. even if MGS and FF were to go multiplatform, i've still got Lair, Warhawk, Motorstorm, Killzone PS3, Heavenly Sword, Ratchet and Clank, White Knight Story, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, the obligatory God of War 3 we know is coming, sequels to Resistance: Fall of Man, whatever Sucker Punch, Team Ico, and Level 5 have cooked up (outside of White Knight, they're working on another PS3 title, and probably a follow-up to Rogue Galaxy, which is a suprisingly good game).

that's plenty of love for this year alone, all first and second party, not to mention the titles that haven't even been announced yet. 3rd party titles that are "exclusive" and multi-platform titles round everything out.

"thats cool you use your PS3 for all its other uses, because in the games dept. it is losing ground every month."

not really. the console has only been out 3 months. we all know the titles that are scheduled to release this year, many are high profile. when, exactly, did the 360 get interesting? not until March 2006, when Oblivion came out, a full 5 months after the console launched. after that, there was a large lull until Dead Rising came out, then another lull until Gears of War came out.

we haven't even gotten our hands on quality PS3 titles, excluding Resistance, which is a great game. and at least that was a day one title. come this March, a lot of quality titles are coming out, starting with Motorstorm in two weeks, then, for those that couldn't play it on the 360 or PC, Oblivion a week after that. from there, it just gets better.

"yeah the wii is another issue entirely, but i'm positive that crippled wii versions of PS360 fare would NOT make it more 'FUN'. best bet for Wii is to have all these XBL arcade devs graduate to Wii retail games and make some original games that you could ONLY play on the Wii."

i don't think there is much that can be done to help the Wii once the 360 and PS3 release their killer titles (multi-platform, or exclusive, doesn't matter). it's just hard for me to see it surviving the onslaught of games like Halo 3, Mass Effect, Bioshock, Assassin's Creed, Mercenaries 2, Metal Gear Solid 4, Final Fantasy XIII, Heavenly Sword, GTA IV, Killzone, etc, all releasing this year (either in Japan or the US, or both).

contrary to many people's beliefs, new technology always brings about new gameplay experiences, not just pretty graphics.

i guess those folks on the internet forgot that games like Shadow of the Colossus, GTA 3 - San Andreas, Halo, God of War, RE4, Deus Ex, Mercenaries, etc just couldn't be done on an SNES, or even a PS1.

the pretty graphics are just a bonus that comes with more powerful technology.

more power means better quality textures can be used, so why not use them? do the visuals in RE4 really matter to the gameplay? no. but does it hurt that they're there? no.

Nintendo has got their fanboy's perspectives twisted, and it's going to take games like the ones i've listed above to get them to see that visuals and gameplay don't have to be mutually exclusive.

my favorite example is to play the game F.E.A.R. on your PC at the lowest possible settings for about an hour. then, crank up the settings to maximum, play the same area for an hour, and note the difference in immersion the visuals made (i had to do just that when i got F.E.A.R. before i got my new video card. after i got the card and replayed the game, holy crap. it was like a totally new experience).

didn't mean to go off on another tangent, but those are just my thoughts on this whole matter.

personally, i'll own all 3 systems at some point, and all this exclusive this, exclusive that talk will matter little to me, but to be honest, it does already.

yeah there's just late than there's LATE.

and EXPENSIVE.

and at least with these first batch of PS3 titles (while fledging launch titles as you correctly state - still a year late in comparison to the competition) -haven't been AS GOOD. with some missing online play altogether, framerate issues etc. etc.

the landscape will no doubt be completely different by year's end, but if most of PS3's 3rd party games continue to be comparable and multiplatform like is starting to happen, then it's going to be left up to the success of blu-ray to justify the PS3's extra cost.

if it doesn't, publishers making games for the 360 first, PS3 second (if at all) will become the norm. it was afterall, the 3rd party games that made previous playstations successful. not the 1st party games, regardless of their quality.

funny you mentioned F.E.A.R., one of 360's launch titles Condemned, along with PGR, had me going well into februrary until Fight Night came out. two weeks later didn't just bring Oblivion either, it also brought the awesome GRAW. Saints Row was out along with Dead Rising as well...then all the downloadable content came for those 'old' games...Madden...then not just Gears but Rainbow.... 06 was a fun year.

Not really related to this thread but someone mentioned LOZ:TP and I have to ante up since I'm about halfway thru the game right now:

LOZ:TP is the best game I've played in years. It starts a little slow if your a veteran, and it is familiar to the other 3d games in the series at first, but it just keeps ramping up with new things, all ingeniously designed. Un-freakin real how good it is.
It's amazing that shit like Over-G Fighters and Gundam come out at $60, and a game like LOZ has literally enough content for ten games and is $50. They could release that sucker for $99.99 and it would be worth it.
Total tangent but whatever. GO PLAY LOZ:TP right now and rejuvenate your gaming soul.

The big news for me is it's another PC port of a console game, further negating my need to by anything other than possibly a new graphics card to stay current. Now if only there was a PC ports of MGS4, GTA4, FFXIII, Assassin's Creed, Kane & Lynch, and Spider-Man 3, Smackdown, and Burnout, life would be perfect (and Vista would be worth it made them part of that underhanded "can't do this on XP" campaign like Alan Wake and Halo 2).

actually, according to the IGN interview with Pandemic, the game was built on the PS3 as the primary SKU, then subsequent versions (the PC and 360) versions, were built based off of that design work (and obviously not the design code).

also from that interview:

" We started from scratch to program for the multiprocessors on both machines. They were both in mind when we were writing the text, so we didn't want to create a PS3 engine, which was and has been, and is, our lead SKU, but we didn't want to ignore the Xbox 360. Even though we're just now announcing the 360 version, we have been working on it for quite some time. Really, for development processes, we wanted to make sure one didn't lap the other. "

he goes on to talk about how the teams are basically one team only difference being different graphics leads (makes sense, ones working with an ATi card. the other with Nvidia).

the point is, Mercenaries wasn't conceived strictly for PS3. using the "advantages" of blu-ray, or mandating a hard drive for example. or my favorite from false-sheppy, "the power of cell".

it was developed to be feature for feature on both consoles. that being the case, why pay extra?

129 comments? Damn that was a long read, 80% being bullshit. Sheppy, I was gonna call you an asshole for the first post, but luckily I read the whole thing before writing, to find out that that was an impostor. Still, this (posted by you) made my bullshit alarm go off:

"Flash forward, January sales... Xbox 360 has several January releases including Lost Planet. PS3? Has Sonic The Hedgehog, media everywhere calling the console a failure, hype to get a Wii outpacing it as a launch console, and a $500 minimum entry fee... and it sold 50,000 units shy of how 360 performed... in-fucking-credible."

Most overhyped console ever, follow-up to the most successful console ever (thus more fanboys buying it), and it still got beat by a year-old console? In-fucking-credible. Launches tend to sell a lot, and put the consoles in super-high demand (Wii, 360), after the huge demand has passed off (OMG NEW TECH!! OMG NEW SONY/MS CONSOLE!!), sales are sure to go down (PS3 is still in that phase of OMG NEW!!!, whereas Xbox 360 is not). A lot of serious gamers already found a reason to buy a 360 before January (Gears of War for a lot), but the 360 still owned the PS3? This is not looking good for the PS3, don't try to spin it.

Next is Metalmurphy:

"Oh and to you saying the PS3 is doomed... do you really believe that? You mean it doesn't matter that the PS3 launch outsold (and for another month) the 360 launch? It doesn't matter if the gap is getting shorter each month? It doesn't matter that a 2 month expensive console, with little games, sold almost the same as a 1 year old mature and cheaper console with tons of games? It doesn't matter that it hasn't been released in europe where the PS brand is stronger?..."

Xbox 360 had supply issues, so the launch numbers aren't comparable, as literally every 360 made was being sold. New consoles usually sell a lot and then slow down, so for a console that's barely 3 months old to be outsold by a 1 year-old console is just a sign of how bad the PS3 is doing.

And no, I don't think the PS3 will be doomed, or fail, there will most certainly be a PS4 and Sony is not gonna jump out of the console market. But will they come out third this generation? Most likely.
