Next Ratchet & Clank officially titled
1UP informs us that the forthcoming Ratchet & Clank adventure is featured on the cover of April's Electronic Gaming Monthly, complete with its full title, Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction. Brian Allgeier, design director for Insomniac Games, notes that the name "works on many levels. It signals a new era for the franchise, ties into the game's story, and includes one of our signature subtitle double entendres."Tools of Destruction might even mark the first time that Insomniac's playful choice of words survives the trip to Europe. You might recall the PlayStation 2 titles, Going Commando and Up Your Arsenal, being respectively changed to the more polite Locked & Loaded and Ratchet & Clank 3. It's just as well Insomniac didn't go for their original and somewhat less subtle choice, Ratchet and Clank To Come: Implements of Ravaging.

The Ratchet & Clank series has included some of my favorite PS2 games; with the exception of Deadlocked, Insomniac has been able to change things enough to keep them fresh without losing what makes the games great in the first place (and even Deadlocked was still pretty fun, just not AS fun). I hope Insomniac backtracks a bit and restores the series to its roots with this installment.
(Also, I hope there's a PS3 price drop somewhere along the line, or several dozen more great games like this announced, so that I can actually justify buying one.)

It might be because I'm not part of the American culture or that English is not my native language, but I really don't understand the "signature subtitle double entendre" of "Tools of Destruction". Sounds just as stupid and 'hardcore' as Gladiator did.
Hirsbrunner @ Feb 22nd 2007 12:09PM
The Ratchet & Clank games were the ONLY reasons I bought a PS2...well, except for Deadlocked. Ugh.
Tools of Destruction and forthcoming Ratchet AND Clank games will be the only reasons I buy a PS3.
Good to hear, Insomniac!

I've loved every R&C game thus far, including the PSP version. It's one of the best gaming series around. I can't wait for this installment.

#2, You're not the only one..
Either way, this game makes me happy to be a PS3 owner.

am i the only person who likes deadlocked/gladiator it may not be a "proper" ratchet and clank but its still a pretty decent game even if it is the worst in the series

3. The Ratchet & Clank games were the ONLY reasons I bought a PS2...well, except for Deadlocked. Ugh.
Ditto.

No, I loved Deadlocked as well. It didn't have the same story set-up as previous games, but the gameplay was just as fun. That said... I did prefer the earlier R&Cs, but even Deadlocked was better than most games around.

Am I the only one that has about a 50% success rate when posting here? Half the time I never receive the verification email. Anyway, lets try this again:
I don't understand the double entendre either... can someone enlighten me? Is 'tools' supposed have double meaning? If so that's pretty weak and nowhere near as clever some of their previous efforts which include the best videogame subtitle ever "Ratchet and Clank: Up your Arsenal". God that's brilliant.

This is the first PS3 game announced that makes me kinda want a PS3 down the road. The system has plenty of other good games, but I can pass on them. This one will be hard to miss if it lives up to my expectations.

There should be a password in those e-mails you are getting. If you use that you don't even need to wait for the e-mail (it doesn't come if you use the password anyway), your comment will be posted immediately.
As for the double meaning of the subtitle... who knows? Hopefully it will be apparent when we play the game.
rfruit @ Feb 22nd 2007 1:56PM
Ahh the password. Thanks.

In previous R&C games, they were often used, well, except for the first one. While the heroes did triumph, it doesn't stop the fact that they were, more often than not, complete tools to some other power. The third one being the most obvious example.
Perhaps, the this references R&C directly as tools, yet they do bust up the shit good. Make sense? Stretching?
Having said that, I liked Deadlock. The entire game could, at any time, be played with others working towards the common campaign. The bots system rocked as well. It was the inferior of the four but let's put it this way. Four years, four Ratchet & Clank games. Eventually they had to hit a peak and back of the series for a bit.

i cant wait for this one. i love all of the previous R&C games. insomniac is awesome (r:fom is a great title too). it will be sweet to see a R&C game in HD. i just played up you arsenal recently and although the game was still fun, the graphics were hard to adjust to (after played r:fom and gears /various 360 titles). maybe if i go play my wii for a little while the old rachet games will look good again. it will atleast get me used to last gen graphics again......
jack shaftoe @ Feb 22nd 2007 3:46PM
They should have called it Weapons of Ass Destruction.
otisgibbon @ Feb 22nd 2007 3:50PM
To keep me interested in the PS3 I'm going to need games like this and some new Sly Cooper games these were my favorites on PS2.
raquor @ Feb 22nd 2007 5:01PM
I got a Tool for ya, right here in my pants! ;)
Hey...I didn't subtitle it...but I'm quite certain that's what they "entendre" is...
At any rate I've loved all the Ratchet Games...even Deadlocked. My favorite is still Going Commando though...much as I like the arena battles they aren't my favorite at all.
Just might have to get a PS3 when this comes out.
Nathan M @ Feb 22nd 2007 5:18PM
This would be the only reason I get a PS3, that I can forsee. I loved all the R&C games, including Deadlocked. Though, I'm glad to know I'm not the only one that doesn't get the double entendre here. Also, Up your Arsenal and Going Commando are now and always will be the best titles evar.
Leshrac @ Feb 22nd 2007 5:21PM
When this, God of War 3, Metal Gear Solid 4, Shadow of The Collosus 2 (or whatever the team's follow-up), Final Fantasy XIII and a price drop or two hit the PS3, then I may finally decide to get one. Everything else seems to be hitting the 360 or the Wii.
evog @ Feb 22nd 2007 6:37PM
"Tools of Destruction" - The Weapons
"Tools of Destruction" - The two "tools" that you play in the game
hotrider12 @ Feb 23rd 2007 3:50AM
I think "tools of destruction" could be like clank be more equip with more new gadgets to morph into for rachet. and it would be nice if insomniac make a 2 player simutaniously gameplay. that would be great!! one person control rachet other control clank in 2 player mode.
I'll buy a ps3 then and a new contra and gradius game
