The real question is: do the games you've purchased from XBLA work (in their full versions) when you aren't logged into the console?

e.g., you and your wife each have your own gamertags, and you purchased Lumines Live with your gamertag. See if she can play it when you aren't logged in.

My brother and I have two gamertags(live enabled tags) on one box.

If I buy a LiveArcade game he can play it.
If he buys one I can play it.

Even if I take my gamertag off and put it onto a memorycard, he can access the games I bought.

What the hell does that have to do with Xbox360's needing repair? I think you are on a whole other page Ed.

Anyways, this id definitely something MS should be ashamed of. I had to return my xbox360 the day I bought it (at launch), and I still get random freezes every now and then. I've never really experienced this sort of thing with any other console I've owned.

mine broke too. i fixed it myself using the heat gun method, before Microsoft extended the warranty.

ED. i have noticed that too. if you put your harddrive on a different 360, then you have to be logged in with the account that purchased the game.

What? The shell was the same? Like, the serial number was identical and everything?

How the hell did they avoid getting a shitty refurbed unit sent back? That's all they ever send me, are other people's broken consoles.

When my 360 was fixed, they just gutted it and replaced everything inside, keeping the case (complete with xbox360 sticker i put on there to see if thats what they did).

Crappy thing is, the power button doesnt click properly anymore.

these things sound like cheap level appliances from Sears where they expect you to buy parts so they make a profit.. micro$oft would NEVER do that...

I just experienced the RROD on Monday, the 19th. I was told to box up my own XBox when sending it to Texas. Maybe the Indian tech support lady's Engrish wasn't the best, and the phone connection sounded like she was on a stock exchange trading floor, but I'm pretty sure I was told to box up my own unit for shipment. Maybe they've run out of coffins?

I found out something interesting about the whole ring of death issue; I got the hanging & 3 red a couple of nights ago with mine. boo-hoo £80 to pay out. But the weird thing was that it only seemed to affect it when i attached the wifi adapter to it. Luckily i have 2 360s (I travel a LOT), and both have wifi adapters; switched them over & it seemed to work (i've tried xbla, dvd and games - not one problem since). This may go some way to explain why people seem to be getting repairs & issue 3,4, ad nausiem. Because the wifi card is dodgy, when you put it back on the new 360, Bam! burning ring of fire again.

SickNic

My first launch 360 had random freezes then within a month of the freezing the red rings of death took over and it was done. I sent it in and got a different one back, Ive had no problems with the new one. If your getting random freezes, your unit will likely fail sometime in the near future. Keep an eye on the warranty.

At least they didn't record your information down wrong and lose your 360 in a warehouse for weeks and weeks.

I don't understand how a process that takes almost a month to complete is considered "painless."

im on my fourth 360. awesome games, but the quality of the machine is shit. this one sometimes has trouble reading discs that my other machines read perfectly fine. i got the extended warranty this time though, im not dealing with the send back to microsoft bs. i did that once and it isnt worth the struggle. it took them well over a month to get my 360 back and it broke in about 2 weeks. good thing it partially worked (turned on and would play for about 10-20 minutes) so i turned it in to ebgames and get used credit torwards a new one. sorry for whoever bought mine, but they give a 30 day warranty so im not too concerned.

You could always get the wonderful extended warranty from Best Buy, and then wait 60 days while they ship your console on a vacation to Toronto. Even when they determined that my console was dead, I had to wait for them to ship the broken one back to Edmonton before I was allowed to get a replacement. So yeah, MS does better for free than what Best Buy does for $70 CAD.

Still on my launch console (knock on wood). Of the 7 people in my office that have one only one guy (who was about 10 places in line ahead of me on launch night) has had a failure. I have seen a few random freezes but they seem to be game related as opposed to system related. The interesting thing is about 10 month's ago I left my console one for two days straight and I got the red ring of death. But I simply unplugged it and turned it back on and not another hiccup since.

I had mine replaced once. Back in february of 06. The process was easy and they actually sent me a second hard drive. they replaced it for free and gave me a hard drive it was quite the surprise. It did take a little long (10 days) but it is a small price to pay for the extra HDD. I have not had any problems since then, and I actually believe that the people saying they are on their 3rd,4th,5th one are at fault. One console I understand, but 3 or 4? take a look at how you treat your stuff.

I just had my 360 die for the second time, 10 days after the 1 year warrenty expired. So after shelling out shipping costs and $139 for repair, I will probably get the extended warrenty. Usually warrenties are a waste of money but not with the POS consoles MS is making, rediculous.

My story about 7 self-destructing 360s I have had just appeared in the San Jose Mercury today:
http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/business/technology/16755824.htm

Such an amazingly fun machine. Such a mechanical mess. A lot like an old British sports car, that way.

I'm annoyed to hear online that 360's bought in 2005 should be repaired for free! The call centre lady never said that to me. I wasn't prepared to pay £85 to get fixed so had a look online.

Send it off to GTelectronics.co.uk based in Dundee, Scotland and they fixed the issue for me. Cost £55 inc postage back to me the form states they fixed the GPU/Motherboard issue and included cooling upgrades. My 360 now purrs like new. Well Purr's is not the right word as the fan they must have added makes the system roar its so loud now but am just glad it works plus get a 6 month guarentee with them.

If they do indeed bring out this new 360 I'll be trading in this one ot upgrade and hope the newer ones are going to be of a better build quality.

I think its funny how forgiving everybody here is of Microsofts doorstop quality of a console. Yet the same people will hop, skip, and dance on Sony's face for every minor infraction. Fanboyism at its finest, I have neither console, but I definitely find it amusing every time this topic comes up.

Yes, because when we call the 360 a piece of crap for breaking so much, we're being forgiving. Reading comprehension is fun, eh?

I was lucky enough to have my refurb slip out of those green cushions on it's way back to me, so it was loose in the box. There are scuff marks on the bottom of the faceplace which probably happened during the shipping. Still works though ....

I got the 3 rings of DEATH like a month after I bought my console. Luckily I bought it a Best Buy and for some damn reason I got their extended warranty, so when it happened I just took it back and they gave me a new one.... Let the big corporation deal with the other stuff!!! Xbox 360 page with Screenshots and videos for you to enjoy! Game On!

I've been reading about this RROD for months now and all I could say was- "I've been lucky- no problems." Well they got me. Waiting for the coffin but I'm so pissed I'd rather creamate it.
