#14 Travis: there's a lot more depth to the game than meets the eye. Perhaps you be more observant during gameplay.

Skepticism: High
Price: $8, Cheap!
Time to Clear: 3 hrs
Final Impression: Sublte Genius!

I downloaded this game skeptical. After the end of the "Level 1" (yes, there are levels), my skepticism hadn't diminished. But by the time I began playing Level 2, I saw the light! Brilliant!!

At each stage, you're introduced to at least one new creature, always more advanced than you.

It's up to you to figure out the "boost" action, and trust me, it's thrilling when you figure out the full potential of each creature! One ability can be exploited by eating the "poisonous" 'anenomies', which effectively makes you berzerk!!

This game's genius is so subtle, and the lack of instructions is actually a feature!!

I bought it last night and played it for about 20 minutes. I guess it is an interesting, stress free experience. The main reason I bought it was due to the hype. So far, I don't regret my purchase.

I REALLY think we need to clear up the definition of "killer app"

I say a killer app must be:

1. A "Full, published game" (basically, not downloadable, like this game, even though this is a good game)
2. It must recieve critical acclaim from the reviewers (a la Okami) or from the public (a la Wii Sports) or both (a la Halo, GTA, Smash Bros, Super Mario, KOTOR, Ratchet & Clank, Resident Evil)
3. It must be AT LEAST a timed exclusive, full exclusive preferable, otherwise you can't say that the game is, say a PS2 killer app, if it also appears on PSP, 360, and Wii at the same time

Can't put this game down? Are you kidding me? Have you played Crackdown yet? Now THERE'S a game that's hard to put down. This Flow nonsense is a killer ap? Wow, and silly me was starting to think the PS3 was virtually worthless. What was I thinking? Thank God this game came out. There's hope for PS3 yet.

Maybe next year you'll get to enjoy the wicked graphics of Q-bert.

It's just too easy at this point.

Killzig - was the game Odell Lake?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Odell_Lake_(computer_game)

This is the game I was kind of reminded of, but it didn't have any free roaming - it was basically turn based.

As someone who actually owns the game, it is pretty relaxing when you play alone. However, the game is so much better when you play with a group of friends which is something that is missing from the majority of the reviews (even though most of them are good). The point of the game is not to be a Halo, MGS, or GoW. It has it's own space and purpose, which it fulfills at a relatively inexpensive price. We can't compare a $8 game to $60 games; the average hardcore user isn't going to want to play this type of game, but this offers casual gamers something to jump into quickly.

On another note, this game takes some time to really get the hang of the controls but doesn't discourage you while you learn (which is key for new players). I definitely see this game getting some good time when I have friends over and they want to all get into playing something (my girlfriend and her sister were playing it last night).

"What was the game widely reported as XBox 360's killer app for the first month or two when it came out?"

I don't know about widely reported, but Joystiq picked Geometry Wars as their favorite launch title for the 360.

It's all subjective, depending on your likes/dislikes.

Personally, I enjoyed Call of Duty 2 and PGR3 over Geometry Wars.

I know it will be compared to Geometry Wars, but honestly, it reminds me more of hexic. Geometry Wars keeps you on the edge of your seat, and is nonstop action. This (and hexic), don't.
I'd say flow is as much of a killer app for the ps3 as hexic was for the 360.

1. Anyone here played the PS3 version of this game? I haven't decided if I want it or not and would like some opinions (i.e. that means opinions of this PS3 game, not on the PS3 system in general. Fanboys can STFU).

Posted at 1:29PM on Feb 23rd 2007 by Vidikron

To answer your question before the 'bots and fanbois hit the fan...Flow is fun. Not terribly deep but fun. My wife and I were able to play for a few hours and just chill out. Killer app? I don't think so...but it doesn't mean it's not fun either. IHMO, it's worth $8.
And before you kooks go ape-shit...I own a 360 and Crackdown AND I enjoyed flow...crazy I know?! *rolls eyes*

ok. people are wondering if motorstorm will be the next killer app? maby. heres my opinion. i went to best buy and played it for like 3 hours straight(they prolly got pissed) and i liked it alot. but it really didnt have alot of depth. the graphics where amazing but that brings me to my ultimate point:

honestly.....with the the nice particle effects and exploding car bodies. it was more fun to run into a canyon wall head on and watch the effect than to try and win the race. so im not sure if it will keep attention for more than a few weeks. because once u win a race the i had no incentive to retry it. and watching ur car explode is only fun the first 100 times or so.

and for flow. i enjoyed it slightly. slightly being the key word there. the only thing that i have to say is that to go spend $600, take it home. unwrap that beautiful shiny fingerprint magnet, i sure hope that flOw isnt the best it has to offer. if it is then im sorry.

The online one reminds me a little of orbital..if orbital had no goals, time limits or challenge. Its an interesting idea, and im sure the 1080 version looks fantastic, but saying this is a killer app is like saying electroplankton is a killer app. Its pretty, but its not exactly a 'game', and i doubt that many people will pick it up. I certainly wouldnt buy a ps3 for it

on the flipside if i'd had the money and a compatible TV i would have bought a 360 there and then the first time i ever played geometry wars :p

@61

Thanks for the feedback, that was the type of opinion I was looking for. I too have the 360 and Crackdown... damn, that game is sweet.

Anyway, why did Joystiq have to put a sensationalistic headline on this story? Now we have all the rabid fanboys acting like Sony themselves claimed this was a killer app.

@53. haha. false hopes. thats what they said about the first killzone. now its "u just wait till this one"

to be fair killzone was prolly one of my favorite games out there. not choosing systems. the only thing was framerate problems. if there is a single game that MIGHT make me buy a ps3 its killzone 2. if sony can keep THAT one exclusive.

Mr Khan: No, a killer app must simply be a piece of software that makes people break down and buy the hardware. If people are buying the PS3 for flOw, it's a killer app. I don't think that's happening, though.

There's no way I would call this a killer app, but it's definitely worth the eight bucks. It's just great to lay on the couch and chill with. If you want a lazy afternoon, just turn this on, and veg for an hour of so.

@11:

And you're obviously scanning the posts for posts that are saying anything negative about the PS3, which aren't exactly a rare occurrence these days given that Sony seems determined to take endless PR craps all over their once-successful brand. Get over yourself. We don't have to "STFU" or "move along". We can (and should) voice our opinions about Sony's horrible decisions all we want, and until you can present anything that would contradict the overwhelming evidence that the PS3 is a great way to waste $600 bucks, we will continue voicing those opinions. You want to argue about something? Try explaining to me how the PS3 is failing and sneered at by the gaming community if it's such a fantastic gaming console.

@12:

If you weren't being sarcastic, and I definitely get the impression you weren't, please look into the neglected art of supporting your claims with evidence. Anyone whose major argument consists of "(object of desire here) RULEZZZZ" isn't contributing anything more than 12-year old level fanboyish nonsense.

45. bty,

I hope you are right. I am looking forward to VF5 for my 360 this summer. Also hoping the 360 version has a decent online system. If the 360 has a good online mode (that works) it will definately be the superior version to own.

Hells yea you xbox owners need to pick this up. I think sega already stated there will be no online though cause of lag.

great game... just finished it actually. really great to see all thenew things one by one and figure out how to play it. The most interesting thing I came away with is how sensetive and accurate the tilt actually is. You can get pretty ninja-quick with it and works far too well. I can't want to test this out on multiplayer and have a bunch of friends over to play, I can already see the stealing chaos of powerups. (yes, there are).

The lack of instructions and simple design makes figuring out how things work actually part of the game. I really wish more games would do that and have you figure things out for yourself rather than make it overly simple with arrows and blatant objectives. A step in the right direction, love it.. nowthere just needs to be MORE to it. more levels, more creatures...

Can't wait for Spore n.n

Truly unique games are incredibly rare these days. I'm very thankful for flOw.

I'm sorry, but flOw f-cking sucks.
I don't know what they could have added to make it a huge improvement for the PS3 version, but the original Flash version was entertaining for about 5 minutes before it became mind numbingly boring.
And for eight bucks, I expect the game to last at LEAST eight minutes because I decide it's mind numbingly boring.

Interactive screen saver sounds about right, though.

The flash game was fun for 10 minutes or so, but i'd not be happy if i had to pay for it.
A cool, relaxing, interactive screensaver is about right. And probably what sony should actually use it for.

PS/ If you want to play a similar, but more fun and challenging game then try Orbital on the GBA/DS.. it has a few flaws, but its got a similar style, and a lot more of a challenge.

The PS3 version of Flow is much longer and deeper than the Flash version. I've played it for an hour and half and haven't beaten it. The levels aren't repetitive and you get to play as several different creatures. Also, I find the controls aren't frustrating like the flash version.
