They didn't ask extra for it? That rocks, seriously. I was fairly certain they'd milk this one for all it's worth. Sadly (or not) I already have the OoT+Master Quest pack that game with LoZ:TWW, else I'd buy this in a heartbeat, it's been a while since I last played this beauty.

You can play it now and it is still greatness.

Graphics and 10 years from WOW factor tech wise but art and style is 1st class.

*Tip* Don't take a lil break when you see some cut scenes in the water temple. Can lead to frustration in that place.

Ahh, the good old water temple. I remember yelling multiple obscenities when playing through that one, but I'm not saying I didn't enjoy it. Today I get good laughs at other people's descriptions of their water temple experiences :)

Sadly, I have never played this game (among several other Zelda games), but considering my love of most things Nintendo and my supreme enjoyment of A Link to the Past, Windwaker, and Twilight Princess, I'd say this a sure-fire download for me.

Question for others: I've never played the original NES Zelda game either. Is it worth the time (not having the nostalgia factor to go along with it and keeping in my mind that I have a ton of other games waiting unwrapped on my shelf)?

You can kill Skull Kid as an adult, but he's actually one of the toughest non-bosses of the game simply because he can deal so much damage quickly. :P

/spoiler

Also, $10 is a bargain versus what Gamestop charges for the GC discs(anywhere from $30 to $50). I have both released discs, so I might not get it for VC. :P

I hope Nintey fixes MM for people who have problems with the GC disc or can't access the N64 or find the cart. Chances are they will.

If I didn't own this game, I still wouldn't pay 10 dollars for it on Virtual Console. Why Nintendo thinks people want to spend good money on games they have already owned in the past, I have no idea. As an aside, with other various "Virtual Consoles" methods for the PC, you can add Anti-Aliasing and other filtering to Ocarina of Time, running it in Hi-Def resolutions, and making it look 10x better than it will look on the virtual console on the wii. So what is the point?

Nintendo basically wants to reward our loyalty by selling us THE SAME FREAKING GAME for a second time, Kudos Nintendo, I'm really feeling the love.

I'll probably end up picking this one up, along with LttP, solely because my father never beat 'em, and he's a big Zelda fanatic.

18 bucks so my dad can grow to liking video games and possibly buying me more? Sure. And on top of that, two GREAT games.

Now, if only Excite Bike would release with it...

What's the deal with the Water Temple? It's been 10 years and the only thing I can remember was that this may have been the temple with the room where you had to play the ocarina in a room with the triforce drawn onto the floor and I accidently played the tune when I wasn't standing directly on that part of the floor and then spent hours wandering around trying to solve it. Other than that, I seem to remember enjoying the temple.

You mean Nintendo hasn't made sequels to the game based on its success, with the latest one being a fan service reminding people so much of OoT?

The 3D nature of the temple contrasted with the more 2D movement you had to do. Since you can only go up and down (with the Iron Boots) it was nearly impossible to find a certain section.

I'm almost considering buying the Wii just for the Zelda games... But not Majora's Mask. I HATE that friggin' moon! What's the point of making that ice environment warm again when you have to turn back time anyway?! Also, the sound Link made when using a mask wasn't exactly pleasant... But OoT is my all-time favourite game, and I would love to get to play TP.

No, I do not have my N64, but I do have the OoT cartridge :(

Who the hell said the VC was exclusively for people who have already owned the games before? There are tons of people buying a Wii that never bought a console before, what if they want to play Zelda OoT? Then 10$ is a SWEET deal.

So far the Wii can play Legend of Zelda, Adventure of Link, Ocarina of Time, and Majora's Mask on the GC collector's disc, Wind Waker on a GC disc, Twilight Princess on a Wii disc, and a downloadable Link to the Past. That's every console Zelda. Now I'm just crossing my fingers for some Game Boy action on the VC for Link's Awakening. And where the fuck is SMB: The Lost Levels on the VC? I need those.

@ crusher

I'd have to disagree

I played the original zelda when it first released years ago. I haven't played it again sense...until now and I have to say it's truly amazing what Nintendo squeezed into that gold NES cart. I've ripped Nintendo recently for a lot of bonehead decisions they've made but I give credit where it's due. The original Zelda is a true masterpiece and even after playing through TP, Windwaker, Majora's Mask and OoT, I'm still loving the original.

Sadly, I never played LttP but I have it in VC so I'll be playing that next. I have Oracle of Seasons too. It's going to be some serious Zelda love going around for the next few months.

on topic...
OoT is a pass. have the original 64 cart and the GC disk. Pass. I'll download MM though.

@ Husk

When you're an adult you go to the stumps in the Lost Woods where the Skull Kids normally appear. If you run near them or draw your sword, they'll attack you. If you can beat them you can get a Purple Rupee but if you're not ready, you shouldn't fuck with the Skull Kid. Seriously.

Crusher: Yes, it's worth 5 dollars. I played the original to death (I was like 5 then, mind you) and loved it, and would (and probably will) end up paying 5 bucks for it again.

It's just an open ended game that's never short on adventure. And on top of that, it's good to know the roots of the best series of video games ever, right?

Anonymous: Good thinking about using that as your name. Most people don't take too kindly to people bashing things that they're willing to do. I'm not one of them, as I think it's my money and I can waste it on what I want. Also, as many pointed out, not everyone owned/owns the original. I lent mine out to a girlfriend who moved away to Missouri.

But, I kinda agree with you. Nintendo could definitely put a little bit of effort into this. For example, how cool would it have been if they had given OoT controls like TP? Pretty damn cool...

I totally want that, but i also want the original experience. Nintendo never intended the VC for new stuff, but if you got both versions for $10 that would be quite awesome.

Striderhayasa: Yeah, I understand that it's a great classic, but I think, as a person who never played the original when it was released (considering I wasn't even alive then and wasn't really a "gamer" until about 4 years ago), that the game does not hold the same value to someone who didn't grow up playing now-retro games as it does to someone who did. But who knows. Maybe I'm fairly unique in my dislike of it.

I suppose my final advice (at least advice that doesn't recommend doing anything illegal) to crusher would be to go ahead and download it unless you're really strapped for cash since $5 isn't much of an investment anyway.

I still have The N64 and the game, but you really needed a guide to complete it. There was NO way you were ever going to finish it by listening to Navi. The latest incarnation is much better in that regard.

#39, I didn't use a guide or FAQ or anything for this game. I never do. I despise FAQs. I only go to GameFAQs for specials and combos in fighting games, and for games I've beaten decades ago but forgot how. Me and Navi rocked that shit.

That's silly. I never used a FAQ for that game and I've beaten it twice.
...especially since (good) FAQs were particularly hard to come by back in 1998 or so.
Kids these days!

anyway, I'll probably eventually buy this, if only because I already bought the original and aLttP...plus, I've got them organized into columns, with the original Zelda at the top, aLttP in the center and a big gaping hole that I refused to fill at the bottom until Ocarina came out. I did that with the Mario games, too.
But I've still got to beat Mario Word, DKC, Kid Icarus (which I'm STILL only on the 3rd stage, despite having been playing it almost nightly for about 3 weeks now) aLttP and the new Sonic, so I might hold off, seeing as I have plenty to do, still.
...on the other hand, that hole is really buggin' me.
