GameHead gets Reggie making PS3 shooting crack
Well, one way to toss away your kid friendly image is to make fun of people getting shot. On last night's GameHead, Geoff Keighley spoke with both Reggie Fils-Aime (Nintendo) and Phil Harrison (Sony) about their respective system launches. Reggie went all Perrin Kaplan while discussing the PS3 launch lines saying, "Were those the people ducking to not get shot?"Fils-Aime dug into Sony deeper saying they had no line at last year's E3, the PlayStation 3 is a "very expensive device" and Sony's got some "core fundamental issues with their strategy."
Harrison, who is clearly on the defensive, starts rambling about the PlayStation 3 after Keighley says those who own the console are happy, "I think that's the important thing to measure. What are we doing? We are creating entertainment. We are creating technology that empowers entertainment for people. And ultimately, it's the people who spend their money, who buy the machine, who love the machine, who have a tremendous relationship with that machine, whether it's playing games ..."
Keighley interjects, "So not a lot of guys coming up to you on the street saying, 'Phil, you know, I feel ripped off.'"
"Never," responds Harrison.

The beginning of a horse race hardly ever looks like the end. Im not saying things may be the opposite of what they are now, im saying alot of people are putting their feet in their mouths and a going to look really stupid if anything about the current situation changes.

I don't understand why people have a problem with that comment, it's a little cheap, but within the field of play. We all saw the difference between to two launches, and the ps3 launch certainly had increased tensions and violence.

You're right - and many of those Sony fanboys are realizing their feet have been in their mouth since the two systems were announced. ;)

I feel the PS3 is good value for what you get here in Britain it's £425 for a machine that plays games and Blu-Ray, 60gb HDD(which is interchangeable with other 2.5" HDD's) and built in wireless
now to get a 360 with 20gb HDD(proprietry only) wireless and HD-DVD it cost's £470.
Now i am not saying PS3 is better than 360 i'm only trying to get accross it's the best value(IF you want all of those extras)
I have a 360 and have never once felt ripped off
I will buy a PS3 when better games come out
I have a Wii and i feel a bit ripped off by it but i'm not saying i don't like it i just feel £180 is too much for what it actually is £100-£130 would have been better

Ok, try not to hate. I own all three next-gen consoles. They can all be a lot of fun, but PS3 has REALLY DISAPPOINTED me thus far. Hope you're reading Phil, but your PS3 needs help (Again, I ACTUALLY own a PS3). I can't wait for FFXIII and MGS4, but it's going to take a whole lot more than those games to win the war. FYI I'm posting this via my Wii.

I bought a 60G PS3 & returned it. The biggest reasons were:
1) I'm big on multiplayer, so the fact Sony's online service can not even be compared to Microsoft's (I don't mind paying for quality) is a big minus. It is WAY behind, add to that there is no headset bundled with the system & you will enjoy many a quiet nights while playing multiplayer in RFOM.
2) No HDMI cable included, the graphics look bad with the packed in cable. How can you tout blueray & not include a high def cable? What's the point?
3) I got an HDMI cable, graphics still do not look as good as the 360(yes I have a 1080p LCD). Granted I did not play any BR movies just games.
4) By using bluetooth for the controller, it resynchronizes while your playing a game like RFOM causing you to turn in circles. Oh how I HATE this!!
5) NO GAMES WORTH BUYING (at least for me), RFOM is the best available but pales in comparison to Gears of War. Don't get me wrong, I liked it - but not $700 worth(game+system).
6) It is HOT. Anyone else notice how hot the system gets? Way hotter than the 360. I had the system well ventilated in an open space.
7) Controller does not feel right, no rumble either. Uses stupid USB cable for charging, cable is too short. Six Axis use has no real substance yet unlike the Wii.
There's more, but when all is said and done I couldn't justify paying MORE for a system that was inferior to the Xbox 360. I had to return it.
This is the first time I will not have ALL the systems(I even had a 3DO back in the day). I've enjoyed the Playstation brand through out the years, but the path they have chosen is way off this time out.
BTW - I left my Tekken Dark Resurrection on the hard drive as a present for the person who buys my "Open Box Item". =]
Most developers from what I hear HATE programming on the PS3. As an example Gabe Newell (Valve) hates the PS3 & thinks Sony needs a complete do-over. There are not many block buster exclusives left on the PS3. Every day more developers are jumping ship. It's hard to believe, but there are rumors flying about Tekken 6, MGS, DMC, etc. Granted, they may not be true. But since there are really no games yet for the PS3, why not wait and see instead of flushing $600+?
As a blueray player it's a bargain. As as a Next-Gen system it's overpriced.
Anyway its all just my opinion, but considering that I can easily afford to have all the systems. I think its somewhat telling. When I had the PS3, I just kept thinking "WOW I could spend a fraction of this money and get some new games/content on the 360". So that's what I did. I lost around $70 by taking the PS3 back (trade ins on the games at EB), but I figure I'm still ahead rather than pissed off and $700 poorer. =]

Wow, first it's Perrin Kaplan claiming anything from Wii being region free, misunderstanding marketing terms, claiming the features in the Wii rollout being so slow is simply because us Nintendo fans are far too stupid two wrap our heads around a multifunction console, and likening the Sony consumer base as a bunch of dumb gun toting thugs. Now it's Reggie making the gun jokes.
Hey, Nintendo. How about instead of pulling this bull, you start working on FIXING the game situation. How about some games with meat to them that were not directly raped from your Gamecube consumer base? No offense, but VC and minigames is getting pretty old and it would be nice to have an interview where you jackasses talk about how to rectify the constantly delayed game releases.
And yes, I know Sony has this problem too, but let's put it this way. You don't see Phil Harrison saying "Maybe that GBA SP thought it was a Pikachu when it killed that kid... lolz.. burn!"
Kannon @ Feb 24th 2007 12:31PM
I dont know how anyone can defend the PS3 as being a cheap Blu-ray player. Knowing how fast technology develops, a Blu-ray player should be down to the most 200$ by next year, or else Hollywood studios might just keep putting everything on DVD. Sony is pushing another expensive format that people really dont need yet. Once HDTVs are as common as VCRs then Blu-ray will be worth it.
Sony set the price of Blu-Ray players, of course they're gonna make the PS3 cheaper to attack its competition.
Fatass of Kickassness @ Feb 24th 2007 12:32PM
Sheppy, you're the last person I would disrespect as you're posts are usually top notch here, but Reggies gun joke was definately nothing to go into a rant about. It was a small joke, unlike Perrin's comment, and could easily go unnoticed.
And... fixing the game situation? Go to Wii-IGN and check the game profile list. There is more than Minigames and Gamecube games there, my friend.
REUYL @ Feb 24th 2007 12:41PM
Is it just me, or does Reggie seem like a much bigger idiot than Harrison now?
sheppy @ Feb 24th 2007 12:49PM
Why? Because I'm bored and my system is rendering right now....
"1) I'm big on multiplayer, so the fact Sony's online service can not even be compared to Microsoft's (I don't mind paying for quality) is a big minus. It is WAY behind, add to that there is no headset bundled with the system & you will enjoy many a quiet nights while playing multiplayer in RFOM."
I agree here. The unified system sucks. But the online is functional and that's really all I ask. As stated in in another thread. I don't mind paying for online on one console but I'll be damned if I'm paying to take all my consoles online. And, incidently, PS3 detects wireless Bluetooth headsets. In fact, my headset for my cellphone works and it's one hell of a lot more comfortable than that cheap plastic thing that comes with 360. It's all about choice. PS3 gives you choices, Microsoft gives you brand labeling.
"2) No HDMI cable included, the graphics look bad with the packed in cable. How can you tout blueray & not include a high def cable? What's the point?"
See, this is the complaint I don't understand. You've spent how much on the console and a $20 cable is going to kill you? Would have been nice to be a packin, yes. But it's not like these cables are $100 by themselves. Hell, I got my HDMI (Monster Cable) for $12 on clearance at Wal-Mart about 8 months before the system launched.
"3) I got an HDMI cable, graphics still do not look as good as the 360(yes I have a 1080p LCD). Granted I did not play any BR movies just games."
Compare launch 360 with current 360. The better looking games are coming and even then, it will be very slight but if you're expecting EA, Activision, and THQ put put in the extra effort, well, let's just say I can see how you're disappointed.
"4) By using bluetooth for the controller, it resynchronizes while your playing a game like RFOM causing you to turn in circles. Oh how I HATE this!!"
This was fixed in one of the earliest firmware adjustments. It could also be a matter of the wireless internet fighting with your controllers. In which case, rather than having your router go to random channels (auto), configure the router to a static channel and this usually clears things up. This tactic also helps with Nintendo Wii and 360's wireless internet.
"5) NO GAMES WORTH BUYING (at least for me), RFOM is the best available but pales in comparison to Gears of War. Don't get me wrong, I liked it - but not $700 worth(game+system)."
Well, this is kinda your fault for expecting this of a launch console. Most launches, people can usually only find one or two games to keep them entertained until second gen software drops.
"6) It is HOT. Anyone else notice how hot the system gets? Way hotter than the 360. I had the system well ventilated in an open space."
Well, despite getting hot, you'll notice the consoles cooling fan adjusts speed automatically to compensate for the heat inside the console. Also, even though the console gets hot, it never gets so hot the motherboard starts to unsolder connections, unlike 360.
"7) Controller does not feel right, no rumble either. Uses stupid USB cable for charging, cable is too short. Six Axis use has no real substance yet unlike the Wii."
I like the controller and I always disable vibration. It's annoying and developers usually only know one trick with it. I was playing games before "shaky in my hand means I got hit" and I'm fairly smart enough to figure out when I've taken damage. And you know you can BUY those cables in other sizes, right? Personally, I like the USB method. Because, once again, I can choose who I buy the cable from, unlike 360. As for no real substance yet, does Wii have any real substance? Tilt is fun (Ridge Racer 7 is great when a flick of the controller equates to shifting gears) but if you were expecting something with meat on it, I can see how you're disappointed. I just can't see how you're happy with Wii.

How about this, I just post what games are currently available as well as what's coming in the short term future.
Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz- Gamecube port
Elebits- A minigame with substance but in the end, still feels like a minigame.
Marvel Ultimate Alliance- Port
Sonic & The Secret Rings- It's a Sonic game, even if it was new, it still sucks.
Mario Party 8- Minigames
Wario Ware: Smooth Moves- Minigames
Zelda: TP- Gamecube Port
Cars- Gamecube Port
Cooking Mama- Minigames AND a DS port
Rapala Trophies- Not a port or a minigame, just a pile of shit cleverly disguised as a plastic disc.
Super Paper Mario- Gamecube port
Rayman: Raving Rabbids- Despite being minigames, I still consider it among the best in the library
Chicken Little- See comment above about Rapala
ExciteTruck- Looks, plays, and feels like a pathetic shadow of Hydro Thunder
Need For Speed Carbon- Port
Monster 4x4- See comment above about Rapala
Call Of Duty 3- Port
Red Steel- See comment above about Rapala
Metal Slug Anthology- Port, plus I own the original MVS carts
Trauma Center- It's a port that feels like a minigame... double points off. But it also found it's way into my collection.
Blazing Angels- Port and it sucks... unless they magically took the suck out of it before release.
WiiPlay- Minigames
Madden- Port, and it's sports... double points off
Tiger Woods- Port, and it's sports
SSX Blur- Until they bring back the insanely fun levels of the first two and ditch this "I wanna be Coolboarders" kick they're on, I'm not looking this way.
Super Swing Golf- Sucks
Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam- A piss poor wanna be SSX Tricky

Yeah, I agree with you Sheppy... how can anyone be displeased with the PS3 and not with the Wii???. I mean, how many worthy games are coming for the Wii in the next months???... It´s the same with the NDS and the PSP, everyone hypes the DS because of the games... well how many games does the DS are really that fun compared with the PSP library???. Yes, they´re really fun at first, but they get old soooo fast. I own all the consoles and when the Wii came out I knew it was going to be just like the DS, lots of hype and then... only two or three good games.

You're making too many generalizations about the games you listed (and you left out quite a few good-looking games out of that list).

I love how everyone gets offended by this. Who is it offensive too? The people who got hurt at launch? He wasn't ripping them. The only people that would ever be offended to this would be Sony, and that's the point of the remark.
Average Comment: ZOMG?! He shouldn't have gone there! Someone died for teh Wii!
Did it not happen? Was there not numerous accounts of violence during the PS3 launch? I'm surprised a competitor would take it as easy as Reggie did. There were multiple people who were shot/shot at, attacked, trampled, and crushed (not just in North America, but Japan as well). One girl dies after going home (instead of seeking medical attention, which was brought up by the radio people), and suddenly Nintendo and Sony's products have the same 'record' (for lack of a better term).
My bad for thinking someone being an idiot isn't as bad as innocent people being beaten, shot, trampled, and crushed.
This isn't flamebait about consoles. It's about people who are easily offended to STOP being easily offended. Welcome to the real world. Companies in competition will 'low-blow' each other all the time. You'll hear worse on Comedy Central for crying out loud.
Anonymous Rep @ Feb 24th 2007 1:28PM
Just watched and listened to the whole thing, and I'll comment on it.
Shane did a decent job with where Microsoft is coming from, and at the same time, I know too much about our stuff to be that excited. We all know where the 360 is coming from, and where it's going to go - Halo 3.
Reggie was having fun - you could see that. And the issues with 'Hold your wee for a wii' weren't directly related to just standing in line at a store to get one and having someone come up and shoot you - there were disclaimers and releases signed for that. He was very relaxed with the whole thing.
Phil ... has issues. He sounded very uptight, and you'll notice how he was defensive and argumentative with the reporter about the media giving PS3 less than stellar reviews - practically accusing the reporter of being part of the problem.
Now, you all know that I come at this from the Microsoft perspective - I can't help that. What I see from these three interviews is a company that's made some goals, and has a definite plan for being somewhere in your living room, and in coming out with rich, high content games that may not appeal to everyone - Microsoft. I see another company that's all about playing family oriented game and making profits and having fun doing so - Nintendo. I see the third company trying to figure out what they want to be - a movie player or a game company. If this is the year for software, then Sony had better hope that they keep SOME exclusives, because as Reggie said, it's an expensive console.
Now - some comments from stores and customers this last week. Wii's are hitting the stores again, and still selling out. 360's are also selling out, and I have no idea about Zephyr or anything else - those of us in the field are almost the last to know. I do know that sales are still right up there. PS3's are - well, gathering dust. Two of the gaming stores I was in have consoles sitting there that were there last month - they haven't sold any. The customers do say that they're a quality blu-ray player, and do a good job of doing that.
The problem is - it's supposed to be about the games, isn't it? I was told by a hardcore gamer that he was hugely disappointed by RFOM - all he had to do was hold the trigger down and run through it. There was no strategy or real game play involved. That, and he burned his hands on it when he touched the side after playing for about 3 hours.
So - does Sony have the same lock on the next gen as they did before? Nope - now we're in a real competition. Microsoft has 10+ million sold in the US as a lead, and even if PS3 matches sales (which I don't see happening), the 360 will always have more of the market share than PS3. Wii has a chance to equal the 360 share, because they're trying to appeal to a broader market than regular gamers, and they may succeed. The next generation does NOT belong to Sony - that's obvious by now - and their stranglehold on market share is a thing of the past. (Too bad their strangehold on arrogance isn't.)
I see market share for the consoles this year being something like 40% 360, 30 % Wii, and 30 % Sony, split between the PS3 and PS2.
Jake @ Feb 24th 2007 1:32PM
Here's the thing. The PS3 is not a lot of fun right now. It will get much, much better. But right now, it pretty much sucks compared to the 360 because of lack of games. The 360 launch was not significantly different, but there wasn't a badass HD console alternative at the time. So, even though the 360 launch games aren't stellar by today's standards, they were still kickass at the time. PS3's stuff is not kickass right now. It is mostly a mess. It only looks bad because the 360 is sitting there rather mature, but it still looks bad.
There are three ways this could have been avoided.
1) Launch the console when your competition does. Had the PS3 launched a year ago it would have looked just fine. Sony failed to do so and delayed their system multiple times.
2) Launch the console with significantly more tech under the hood. People still debate this, but the PS3 games don't look any better than the 360. At least when xbox launched a year after PS2, the xbox games were graphically better, albeit not by much.
3) Don't lie about your product to confuse console buyers. I honestly think they gained by making up reasons for PS3 superiority. I ran into a semi-casual gamer the other day that mentioned the Killzone trailer as a reason he was waiting on a PS3 price drop.
So that's it in a nutshell. Sony fanboys can try all they want to make the 360 look like crap. But the bottom line is that 360 users are playing from a much larger, much better library of games than PS3 users. I would assume they are having a better time. You can make guesses at what the future holds, but remember when you do that only a few months ago you were still posting comments about how the PS3 would blow the 360 away out of the gate, both graphically, game quality-wise, and hardware sales (which eventually lead to better software support).
The PS3 may end up the best system with the best games when it is said and done with. But by the time the PS3 even matures, I would have already had an extra year of gaming with the 360 plus at least a year of superior HD gaming. Don't get me wrong, I will likely own a PS3 eventually. But I don't even think I'd play it right now other than rfom even if somebody gave me a PS3. Not because the PS3 has absolutely nothing to do, I'd just be too busy playing my 360!
If you don't own a system and are getting one this week and don't have any product loyalty issues, the 360 is by far a better choice. Just go to metacritic.com and compare the best 360 games to the PS3. If you just care about games right now and over the next year the 360 is 100% the best choice. In a couple/few years, it may very well be different.
Sorry I dind't mention the Wii in my argument but my interest in that system is so low that it is a non-factor. I am as interested in it as any other last-gen console, even if it has motion controls. The PS3 still interests me very much. I think its hardware is better than PS3 overall, though I love the 360 controller.
David @ Feb 24th 2007 1:50PM
For once I will not make fun of Sony, that's old by now.
I will say through that the joke was good! Sure people getting shot at for PS3s were bad, but the CT guy was asking for it and I'm glad he got shot. it all comes down to what style of games you enjoy playing. Me, I enjoy the type of games that are out/coming out for the Wii. I had a ps2 for 6 months and an xbox for 6 months a few years ago, just never found anything i enjoyed playing other than toe jam and earl 3 (just because it was so true to the original). I am a casual gamer, i sit down for 30 minutes, play the games, then get back to my life... i cannot get into a game that requires you to send hours figuring out how to finish it... look at your options and choose the best for yourself or your household, they are all different...

All those PSP games are overrated. The only game(s) really worth playing on PSP is Lumines/Lumines2.
And as much as I love my DS, it has been very slow lately. I haven't bought a new ds game in months.
@ sheppy
Man, sometimes you need to chill a little. Yeah sure, Nintendo fans are annoying. And sure, gamers have been a *bit* melodramatic in their distaste of the PS3, but really, Sony has done nothing but piss on gamers' feet for the past year and a half. Why stand up for them?
And I don't think anyone is saying it was okay for MS to lie about what the Xbox would be capable of, but come on man, you cannot tell me that ANY game company has pulled anything near as shameless as that Killzone 'trailer' for PS3 that was 'real-time.'
I also loved the comparison between the "target-render" for Motorstorm and how it actually ended up looking. That was just pathetic. Don't get me wrong, I played Motorstorm demo and it looked like it would be fun (though probably for no more than 2 hours) but the graphics are shit. They look like Burnout 360 only in the mud. Whoooopdeeedoooo. And yay for 2D shrubbery!
Your comments amuse me sometimes but you also go too far too often. Just face it, Sony promised us not only 'next-generation' but the 'next-next-generation' that would blow the 360 out of the competition. Not only did they fail miserably in their promise to skip a whole generation, they haven't even matched the 360 yet (not even close).
All Sony has proved thus far is that their system is no more powerful than the 360, which launched over a year ago and has better games at a cheaper initial price.
I'm not sure I understand your Wii hatred either. At least Nintendo is trying to do something different. And quite frankly, I'm more impressed with the Wii's Launch than I was for 360, PS3, or the DS.
I'd take a free, albeit relatively shallow, minigame collection over yet another $50 ($60?) FPS-clone any day.

and Jeff, i dont hope anyone fails this round. Heck even nintendo didnt do horribly last round, the sales between the GC and xbox were nearly identical.
But either way...what point at ALL does it serve to WANT a company to fail? If you were any kind of gamer you'd want all companies involved to do well and thus expand gamings opportunites and audience and thus make the whole genre richer. Not the other way around.

#32 "You know, I love how everyone talks about Sony tech demos overpromising and underdelivering. Maybe I'm the only person who remembers these..."
Wow, sheppy. Thanks for proving everyone's point. Just like the crappy systems of the past, the PS3 is underdelivering. I know you're the uber-fanboy, but could you have been anymore ignorant? The best way to make PS3 look good is NOT to compare it to the Xbox and GameCube, because the GameCube failed in North America, and the Xbox failed worldwide (except for North America). I suppose comparing it to the 360 or the Wii was too much for the big black monolith to handle.
Thank you. Thank you for explaining to us where the PS3 belongs within the ranks of gaming consoles.

"those who own the console are happy"
I'm happy because I also have a Wii and a 360. If I just had a PS3, I'd be pissed, because I'd never play video games. Entertainment? What, Blu-ray? Linux? Please. DVD is fine, and PS3 Yellow Dog is a joke (no GPU support? What a waste). If you like irritating entertainment and high-price with low-return, buy a PS3.
Fanboy wars, begin!

As usual, my weekly browsing of the top blogs at Joystiq finds it littered with blatant and undisguised Sony-hate-inspired FUD.
Similarly on par, we have aggro Nintendo militants dancing around the various bonfires that Joystiq writers set for them in true pandering fashion.
Does anyone really read Joystiq isn't a Nintendo fanboy or Sony hater?

Apparently you, considering you responded.

@Kannon
Out of the DS games you listed, Metroid hunters sucked, Starfox Command sucked, and Resident evil sucked on the DS as well. And yes, I played all of the games you listed.
Anyways, fun PSP games, I will now start to list. Also, Let's not get into the whole port/non-port thing. Alot of the DS games you posted can be held in that same regard.
Ace Combat X, Bleach, DJ Max Portable, Killzone, Loco Roco, Lumines (1 and 2), Megaman Powered Up, Metal Gear Solid PO, Power Stone, Chili Con Carnage, Gamarin, Rachet and Clank, Tekken DR, Tiger Woods, Madden, Field Commander, Monster Hunter Freedom, Wipeout Pure, and Valkerie Profile.
All those are fun psp games, regardless if they are remakes, ports, or original.
Aex @ Feb 24th 2007 4:13PM
Hmm, I guess I can concede that Metroid Hunters may have only sucked for me. I hated the 3d try specially on my portable systems where I expect a 2d metroid. So after thinking it over, I'll give Metroid Hunters back.

Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters
on top of your list of four, the ones i named above are PSP games that i've played, own, and enjoy very very much.
i don't get what your point is.
the DS has some good games that people enjoy, and the PSP does also.
they're two different handhelds, for two different markets. both markets seem to be pleased with what they have, even if they aren't matching in sales (25 million PSPs sold isn't a bad thing in the least. it beats the 8 million units the Game Gear sold before it died, and the 3 million units the Atari Lynx sold before it died). the Playstation fanbase that the PSP is geared towards seem to enjoy their handheld as much as the Nintendo fanbase that the GB, GBA, GBASP, DS, and DS Lite seem to be geared for are enjoying their handheld.
Nicholas Sulikowski @ Feb 24th 2007 5:18PM
Frankly I think both companies suck. Go Phantom FTW!
RHR @ Feb 24th 2007 5:48PM
Well, I'll be honest, I'm bored of my Wii.
The channels are slow and last for about 5 minutes apiece, and Twilight Princess lasted for about a day or two. Wii Sports got boring after about a week.
Nintendo are blowing their own trumpet about how innovative and wonderful it is..but it's just a bit of a gimmick really.
Sure, new games will come out, but at the moment my wii is gathering dust in the living room.
E.P. @ Feb 24th 2007 6:11PM
Wow, sheppy, you actually played all those wii games? You are so awesome. We can see you hate everything Nintendo. Clearly you do not have a Wii, so why asume everything the Wii offers sucks? Fanboy-ism @ it's finest, folks...
