We're interested in upcoming shooter Crysisbased on our time playing, but we're not yet sold on the graphic hype the game has been gathering. Today's video pick from GameTrailers shows off footage from the game the game engine, mostly highlighting plants and their shadows. We held on to our skeptic streak through the video, but the movement of the plants and the intricate shadows chipped away at our cynical shells; the engine looks good. But we'll have to wait for the Crysis release to decide how much praise -- and hype -- the game warrants.
See the lovely leaves after the break.
[Update 1: Thanks to the commentors who pointed out that the video is a tech demo and not directly from the game.]
Wow, that was very impressive. At low res it looks real. It'd be interesting to see how the high resolution counterpart looks in comparison. I can feel my FPS dropping to where the game looks more like a slide show.
1.) Joystiq, with all the hype surrounding this game, the graphics hype was the one you've been unconvinced with as of yet? Everything I've seen so far about this game has had something to do with the graphics or physics, with gameplay being an afterthought. Were you being sarcastic?
2.) "After the break" means clicking on the link you clicked on to get to the posts and, therefore, the rest of the content.
"I thought graphics diddent make the game" -giga two
They dont, the experance and innovation of crysis will make the game play.No xbox 360 though...But the guys over at crytec said that somebody with a graphics card a couple of years old will be able to play it, just not at full. you'll need a 8800gtx or higher dx10 card. >belch< !
Don't even think the game will look like that. A 8800gtx can only run oblivion at about 40fps with the settings on full. And how long has that been out?
It kind of pisses me off how developers release screencaps and videos of games knowing full well hardly anyone is going to be able to play it like that.
Someone needs to tell these guys to make games for technology that people can actually go out and buy when the games is released. Not a year later.
Oh nooo i don`t think my PC will run this game: * Intel celeron * ATI 9250 pci bus * 512 Memory Ram * 40 Gib Hard Drive * Windows XP Home Edition !Mannn i`m Fry..........
@ Mode7. Yeah, that's a BRILLIANT idea! Force everyone to use the same old graphics whatever machine they have! I mean going into options changing the video settings is SO hard, lets ruin it for those with brand new rigs like me!
Oh and remember kids, by the time the game comes out, the price of DX10 cards will be slightly less insane.
Crysis will be the game I'll probably install Vista for. (I have a copy, but nothing worked so I reinstalled XP even tho it can only see three of my four gigs of memory :p )
Both of those videos are not of the game Crysis but of IMAGTP's IMAGIN3D architecture and urban planning tool (Interactive Virtual Model), which uses CryENGINE 2. The new video, the Tramway one, is a unfinished WIP demo video which should not had gone public. The finished version of it should be out soon.
Also... according to the president of IMAGTP the demos are in DirectX 9.
Nice use of the English language there Mode7. We'll see if that post gets deleted. And yes, I did understand your post and it's as stupid as you are. They have to ensure the game works on older machines, which they do quite well (hell, even Oblivion will run reasonably well, if not very pretty, on rigs that are getting long in the tooth). As long as it'll run on older machines, why hold back on the maximum? All you'd do is date your game faster.
Now turn off your mum's PII and play outside. You bother me.
No, what I am saying, AI, is that the game you will be playing on your brand spanking new rig will not look as good as the screenshots and vids the devs use to promote the game. DO YOU UNDERSTAND???
I don't have that information, but since the 8800gtx wasn't out at the time I doubt it.
If you look at the video posted above the framerate seems to get quite choppy in places so I doubt the game will be playable on its highest settings using any single card for at least 6 months.
Well, Halo and Crysis are on different systems, so there's really not going to be competition. Still, I 'd like to think that if this came out on 360 it'd own Halo 3.
Two bad the 360 and the PS3 can't even handle the CryEngine 2. LOL The next gen consoles are outdated already. Epic is even working on an Unreal 4 engine and they have already said the 360 and PS3 can't run it. Looks like we have to wait until next "next" gen..lol
It looks really good, It's nice to see the quality i get from Vue 6 infinite in a real time render engine. i have a quite serious pc nad i have trouble rendering some of the crazy plant scenes i make in Vue. i can't imagine real time rendering that shadow scene from within the building. even my pc, built for 3d animation and modeling, is at the bare minimum.
I'm not sure I understand the whole cynicism issue towards Crysis's graphics. Graphically, hands down, it IS and will be the prettiest thing out there. That is the craziest attention to detail I have ever seen in a game, and the lighting is incredible. Jungles in any game have always looked too "PC game" to me. (All Vietnam shooters, etc. I'm looking at you) With trees and bushes here and there, and under them, green and brown colored ground to give the illusion of more foliage, dirt, and fallen leaves. What I see in Crysis IS the jungle. With the amount of trees and bushes you would expect from a real jungle. Nothing about tries to give the illusion of jungle, it IS a digital jungle rendered in real time!
I also don't understand the people who beat the drum of the almost cliché "who cares about graphics what about the INNOVATION and gameplay!?" It's like these people lay in wake to pounce on anyone astounded by pretty graphics and flash their seemingly intellectually superior view on what makes a game "good". I mean, how much can you REALLY do for innovation in a FPS? The camera view is the eyes of your character, you run around, you shoot shit, and you save the day. Other than throw in some gimmicks to add to the gameplay, strategy, and mechanic what else is there? Frankly I find the special suit people wear in the game as gimmicky (although cool), while others will sing its praises as something that really adds to gameplay strategy.
In my opinion the graphical detail of Crysis ITSELF is highly innovative. It allows for so much more interactivity, on a level never seen before--at least never done this well. I could see myself walking around the maps for hours oogling over foliage/lighting/other details before ever seeking enemy to kill. (At some point I'd like to see if I would be able to get infinite bullets with a minigun and see if I could chop down the entire jungle, but that’s neither here nor there.)
I am excited right now, because I can’t wait for the day when graphical detail like that seen in Crysis becomes commonplace.
People claiming that this game won't be playable without the latest $600 video card need to get a grip.
A CRYSIS DEVELOPER said the game runs on High-ish settings with an Athlon 64 3700+, 1GB Ram, and Radeon X1800XT. You can get all this for under $500. And that was about 3 months ago; they are still optimizing the game.
It's just funny how console fanboys who don't know jack about PC's are so quick to join the "waah you need a $5000 computer to play it PC gaming sux" bandwagon.
This is what i got: -Intel Quad core -Pre-order 2 ATI X2800XTX2 Quad Crossfire -4 Gig Memory Ram DDR2 -Windows Vista Ultimate -Power Supply 1000 Watts -500 Gb Hard Drive !UUUUUUUhhhhhhhhhhhh Baby this little Monster will Smoke................
ATI X2800XTX2 Quad Crossfire? lame ass card tried to copy nvidias gx2 setup(that came out almost 2 years ago) and couldent pull it off til now? shows how far behind ati is, oh and for the Quad-vid card setup i can get better performance with 2 8800 gtx's than you can with 4 x2800xtx2!did i also mention that the x2800xtx2 is not even a dx10 card.wtf $600 for something thats already left in the dust.I have a friend with 2 7950 gx2s and he hates me and my 2 8800 gtxs...>belch
