You are not really neutering your Base Station in the process. It is just the nature of the beast. Until 80211 N has a finalized spec don't expect wireless adapters manufactured by other companies to support it because every company could implement their draft-n network differently. If both the wireless router and the wireless network adapter is manufactured by the same company then they should work at draft n speeds. For example, Airport Extreme Base Station users should be able to connect to any wireless network adaptors that Apple comes out with that support their version of draft-n because they should all implement the draft-n spec in the same way.

You have to do this or something similar with all draft-n wireless routers to make them work with the Xbox 360 Wireless Networking Adapter. I have a Netgear WNR834B wireless router and I have to do something similar. It is very easy to switch back to draft-n when I want to. However, even using 80211 g and streaming 1080P videos to my xbox 360, it works great.

@2
you don't really need anything extra to stream media to your 360. for example, you can use windows media player 10, and turn on media sharing.

you can also download software from Microsoft for just media sharing

all i had to do was go into my windows media player 10, Library -> Media Sharing.. -> turn it on and make sure it is allowing to share with the 360.

In addtion to Windows Media Player 11, TVersity also works and will convert files on the fly to wmv format. WinAVI is also good program to convert files to wmv file types.

FYI: Basically what you are doing is turning off the 802.11N feature of the Airport Extreme base station and telling it only to use 802.11B/G. So effectively you are making the purchase of this overpriced router even more pointless...
