Sounds like a perfect DS mini game, blow into the cartridge, furiously hit reset, wiggle it back and forth

you get the gist

1. Blow in it.
2. Stick it in and push it down.
3. Pull the cartridge as far out as you could while it was in the down position.
4. Push down on the cartridge to bring it back into the upper position.
5. Hit the power button and hope.

That was until I figured out the best method for cleaning and protecting the system and the cartridges. Using a cleaning kit clean the connectors in the console with rubbing alcohol (use a second kit to dry or let it air dry for 15 minutes or so). Then apply a slight bit of WD40 to the cleaning kit (spray some in the cap and dip a Q-Tip into it and then rub the Q-Tip on the cleaning kit). Again use another cleaning kit to dry or let air dry for an hour or so. Also clean the cartridges using alcohol and then apply a slight bit of WD40. The rubbing alcohol will remove any corrosion while the WD40 will protect the contacts from developing any new corrosion for a couple of years.

I still use the push not all the way in and down method the first few posts describe. I may try the new connector though.

With the SNES and N64, what I did was blow along it on a diagonal angle and then firmly shove it down hard and hold it down, then push the power switch back and hold it firmly back until the game showed up on the screen. That usually worked, else the game was fucked.

Oh snap, you're right. Blowing in and then wiggling a NES cartridge would've been a perfect microgame for the DS WarioWare.

PLEASE don't tell me some people actually used to be as rough with their NES? I'm sure theres a bit of truth in that vid. Since when did blowing never fix them? I found some GB games from the super early 90's and they just needed a little blow on them before they booted up perfectly. Lost all the saves mind.

Spaz about with your NES = it's going to get worse.

Don't blow! What you're doing is adding moisture to the connector... which improves it in the short term, but causes corrosion in the long term.

The NES uses a weird type of pin that slowly bends back with time. Open up your NES and remove the connector inside. Carefully insert a flathead screwdriver under each connector pin and unbend them. This may take a while, so be patient.

Once you're done unbending the pins, put your NES back together and enjoy mostly blink-free gaming!

I just recently pulled out my NES (mine is 20 years old this year! I feel old). It was not working right away, I thought it was done for. I put some rubbing alocohol on a Q-Tip and ran it over the piano board on my SMB cartridge. After a little wigging it roared back to life. Nintendo makes good stuff. As an aside, my Sega CD is also still working, so Sega deserves a little credit too here.

But remember; Nintendo makes "reliable" hardware that never ever breaks down! Ha ha ha. This problem was the worst thing when it came to Nintendo products.

Oh, and NES games are $5 not 5$.

Got to love that blowing on the cartridge or the console did nothing to help the console's oxidisation problem. Which, although you get your game to work... Is actually killing your console inside. There should have been a cartridge cleaner machine for the NES, that thing would have been a better sollution to saliva as previously stated, it just speeds up oxidisation ten fold. Oh well...

Call it blasphemy......but I never owned an NES in the 80s....as I had well moved on to the APPLE IIC - IIGS / COMMODORE 64-128 / AMIGA age for me.....you crazy kids.

And they are all still in FULL Working order too......

The only consoles (like the NES) I didn't own I picked up later ala Atari 7800, Neo Geo, Vectrex

I had a friend who would put the cartridge in, and if it didn't work, he would hold down the reset button and bang the right side of the machine a few times. Worked pretty well.

Disassemble the NES, remove the U-connector with the bazillion copperish contacts, and bend each one towards the center where the NES cart connects using a jewellers screwdriver.

Perfection.

Everyone used to say how that messed up your games, but I think moving the cart around in the system did more damage. I realized when I went NES ebay crazy a couple of years ago that its really the cart that is worn out and will only play if it placed in a certain spot. Alcohol and a Qtip works the best.

@45 Totally! That wiggle motion of his is infuriating! I think it's been mentioned, but my technique was to blow quick across the cart and then push it in, but not all the way... you have to push it down so it clicks over the edge of the drive... works like magic!

I used to blow/lick/bang whatever worked to get the damn thing working. Then I discovered that jamming a 2nd NES cart in once the 1st was pushed down worked wonders.

A few years ago I discovered that you could buy replacement connectors. Bought one. Replaced original. Works like brand new!

Your best bet is to get the security but tool and a drafting eraser, open it up and use the drafting eraser (white colored pencil eraser) on the pin connecters. Rubbing alcohol doesn't do much of anything. nor does blowing. it's like throwing dice and hoping the game works.

I used to use alcohol to get my games to work.

I don't mean rubbing alcohol, I mean I'd drink until the flashing red screen started to look like a game, then play it for hours. I'm pretty sure that's how I finally ended up beating Battletoads.

Now that I'm sober, I just jam my Zelda II game in on top of whatever I want to play to hold it down. And if I ever want play Zelda II, I just, uh... actually it's not really an issue.

MY TECHNIQUE

You know how when you insert the game all the way, there's usually a bit of wiggle room? Well, I usually put the cart in all the way, then "wiggle" it so that the cart is on the right-est. Or on the left-est. For whatever reason, this works like a charm. I can blow, alcohol, hit reset madly, do whatever, and it won't work, and I just move it to the right, and BAM. It's so bizarre but I don't question it, so long as I get my fix of Marble Madness.

Blowing rarely worked but my trick that always worked was to put the cart in the NES barely so that when you depressed down the cart, the cart would scrape down the inside edge of the NES console. Worked like a charm every time.
