Capcom licenses Unreal Engine for US developed title
Not wanting to be the last to the party, Capcom has become the latest developer to license the Unreal Engine 3 for use in their titles. This comes only days after another leading publisher, Activision, made a similar announcement. Capcom will be utilizing the Unreal Engine for an unannounced title to be developed in North America. Earlier this month, Lost Planet producer Keiji Inafune commented that "western developers are leading the industry, with Japanese developers falling behind."
As Japanese development houses have historically been opposed to middleware, this deal, along with Capcom's recent success here in the west with titles such as Dead Rising and Lost Planet, could be a sign of faith in their western counterpart.

almost all of the best looking games use it. must be doing something right.
Evan @ Feb 27th 2007 3:36PM
EA bought RenderWare, leaving a lot of developers without a game engine! And since Unreal is one of only a couple of engines to support the PS3, a lot of developers are moving to it.
Mr Khan @ Feb 27th 2007 3:39PM
Capcom seems to be the only one that thinks Western devs are "leading" the industry, my guess is that this is an illusion, made so by the 360's current domination
If and when Wii or PS3 takes the lead, all this talk of the West "taking the lead" will fade away
sheppy @ Feb 27th 2007 3:43PM
Both western and eastern development have some issues they need to work out. And this really shouldn't turn into an East vs. West thing.
Geo @ Feb 27th 2007 3:47PM
Well one more on the list....
Geo @ Feb 27th 2007 3:48PM
!Cool now wait for "Gears of Lost Planet"
Dolla Dolla @ Feb 27th 2007 3:49PM
Once SquareEnix decided to license Unreal 3, I think it pretty much solidified the domincation of the engine. Every week, one or two developers license this thing. Epic has its cash cow.
azesino @ Feb 27th 2007 3:52PM
The East Last Great Games belongs to Nintendo, eastern developers are not as dominant as they used to be, Western Developed Games are selling in any market wile japanese games are only selling in their markets with a few exeptions
Erwos @ Feb 27th 2007 4:03PM
It's not like the Japanese are somehow immune to market reality - and that reality is that there are more efficient ways to write games than reinventing the wheel every time. I'd expect this to continue into the future.
NintendoFanbot @ Feb 27th 2007 4:03PM
Wouldn't it be funny if a new MegaMan game with Unreal looked like the guy from the NES box?
I'LL PAY TO SEE IT FAIL HORRIBLY
:D :D :D

Everyone knows by now that the UE3 is a proven success. Epic saved a crap load of money using it for Gears. I'm sure Bioware is also cutting a lot of cost on Mass Effect. Even though they said North American title I think Resident Evil would look great using UE3.
J.Goodwin @ Feb 27th 2007 4:13PM
When it comes down to spending 20 million plus to build your game from scratch versus spending 10 million using UE3, and the market isn't supporting a lot of million sellers, then having the ability to turn a profit on your first few months sales is a big deal.
It doesn't hurt that already there are three major releases out there that use UE3, all with very good results.
Jake @ Feb 27th 2007 4:19PM
Westside bitches.
The UE3 is a very nice development tool. It is also very customizeable, so it isn't like every UE3 game has to look the same. I am sure you could make an impressive Viva Pinata 2 using Unreal if you wanted to.
Mr Khan @ Feb 27th 2007 4:22PM
Just to be said; i don't doubt the awesomeness of UE3, just making a comment on the whole "east v. west" thing
boot @ Feb 27th 2007 4:30PM
Ya know i already know that they said the wii wouldnt hold out against unreal engine 3 despite the large contriversie (i think i spelled that wrong). Capcom did say that they had a few unannounced wii games on nintendowiifanboy, I dont want to start any fights but think about it...Although I doubt it myself the 360 will probably get this game since capcom has already had good sales. But maybe they will test their luck on the PS3, or maybe even the Wii (yeah right)
Crono @ Feb 27th 2007 4:36PM
"contriversie"
you me CONTROVERSY? Holy crap, where do you non-spellers get educated? If it looks wrong, it probably is wrong, and dictionary.com is a "Go" button away!
Now, to address your comment, Wii doesn't have the horsepower to run UE3. It'll run UE2.5 though, because I think thats what Red Steel uses.
Jake @ Feb 27th 2007 4:48PM
Crono,
Here is what I have to say to your #16 quote.
Anal retentive:
Common usage
Conversationally, the term is often used to describe a person deemed to be overly obsessed with minor details. It's roots are said to be from Sigmund Freud.
The term is often used in a derogatory sense to describe a person with such attention to detail that the obsession becomes an annoyance to others, and can be carried out to the detriment of the so-called anal-retentive person. This metaphorical usage has become so commonplace that the term's etymology and original usage are largely unknown.
[edit] Origins
In the psychology of Freud, the anal stage is said to follow the oral stage of infant/early-childhood development. This is a time when an infant's attention moves from oral fixation to anal fixation, usually synchronous with learning to control their anal functions, a time of toilet training. Those who retain an "obsession with detail" (such as that required to learn to control one's anus) into later life are often said to have retained their "anal" disposition, and therefore are "anal-retentive." Some believe this to be a mild expression of obsessive-compulsive disorder.

I hate when Joystiq's posting system glitches and you end up double posting and making yourself look like an ass.
boot @ Feb 27th 2007 5:05PM
U guys need to shut the fuck up about one little word. Get over it I was trying to have a little fun with imagination and you 2 "know it alls" pop up and have a cow over one god damn word!!!! People do this all the time and its so annoying, can we please just comment on the comment itself not one word spelled wrong? Lol come to think of it I probably spelled something wrong in this comment!
SynikaL @ Feb 27th 2007 5:12PM
"I hate when Joystiq's posting system glitches and you end up double posting and making yourself look like an ass."
Gosh, Jake, no need to be so anal retentive about it...

^ plus, if you post again to apologize for the double post, then its a triple post
(did that in a thread earlier today)

@Crono:
You forgot to capitalize the Y in "you" and I believe you meant "mean" instead of "me".

Not exactly what you meant, but it'd be badass to have a mature looking megaman game. But then we might end up with something like that new Bomberman ::shudder::

It's good to know Jazz Jackrabbit's pension is covered.
