Cnet maintains dismay with PS3, lists 10 items for improvement
Cnet Reviews has posted a 10 item listicle outlining what they "hate" about the PS3. While the majority of items on the list have been beaten to death -- notably the console's high price and lack of games -- it serves as a decent compilation of some of the PS3's most problematic weak points to date. And before Microsoft and Nintendo nerds rejoice in the wake of a wounded competitor, refresh yourselves on Cnet's 10 Things They Hate about the 360 which includes many of the same issues that plague the PS3 (yes lack of games and high prices for accessories), and Slate's recommendation that you shouldn't buy a Wii. And for those still holding out for more games before buying new hardware, USA Today sides with you. Everyone happy? We aim to please.
[Thanks, Don]

March is a big month for PS3 games there's a bunch of them coming for everyone out there, every console has it flaws that get worked out later the 360 is not perfect the Wii still needs some tweaks I'm pretty sure if even God made a console it would still not be perfect
Mr Khan @ Feb 27th 2007 5:23PM
A console that could play Wii games and 360 games, used the Wii's NAND memory (if you don't care about downloading stuff), but supported commercial 2.5" HDD
that's the perfect console
Game Artist @ Feb 27th 2007 5:26PM
ahh yes, but the 360 article is dated December 6, 2005
Mr Khan @ Feb 27th 2007 5:34PM
^ Also the the slate article's biggest gripe is merely due to misunderstanding
Some of his gripes (like how ANY motion will work to swing the bat in Wii Sports Baseball) are legit, but he also claims that the remote's aiming was faulty....when he tried to aim it directly at the screen, which isn't how it works
Another day, even more people griping about what's wrong with system "x," same gripes everday
Pick your console of choice, choose one of the 3 combos, or just buy all three, no need to keep griping about it
Jake @ Feb 27th 2007 5:35PM
They are all pretty obvious, well reported and bitched about problems. The PS3 really just needs some games to be honest. When the 360 launched without much, it still looked pretty good because it was HD with badass graphics (COD2 especially). The only thing really making it look bad was Sony's ridiculous hype campaign, which turned out to be them just blowing smoke up your ass.
You couldn't just go get better games with that level of graphics on a competing console when the 360 launched. That is honestly the main reason I own one, along with Oblivion and GRAW. The PS3 out looks bad because there is a cheaper and currently better gaming option right next to it. You are buying brand name and the belief that it will eventually mature into a better investment when you get a PS3. I highly doubt anyone is getting a PS3 because they'd rather play the PS3 games available now, other than hardcore VF5 nuts that can't wait for a 360 version with online.
steve17 @ Feb 27th 2007 5:43PM
well i guess that article was helpful. but c-net reviewed both ps3 and xbox 360. the ps3 got a higher review by c-net but the 360 got a higher customer feedback review.
and also, c-net isnt a gaming site. while they may know their technical jargon, they act more like the casual gamers who play playstation.(u know the people who buy EA games and play them with a friend once a week and dont know anything about there console other than: plug it in, insert disc, push buttons and move thumbstick) they dont get into the nitty gritty details like the hardcore gamers like us do. so while he made some good points(and i love to bash gaystation) i wouldnt really give 2 shits about what c-net has to say about a game console.

I agree with you 100 percent. If the Wiimote was inaccurate due to design flaws then NO game would work correctly. i have no problems playing Zelda, ExciteTruck or WiiBowling or Tennis. Boxing IS inaccurate though and I think that was from lazy programming. Obviously, most issues are from the developer end, that much is painfully clear when you play that piece of shite Red Steel and then go and play Call of Duty 3.
-----------------------------------------------------------
I remember when idiots complained about REd Steel not being one-to-one in the swordplay. I found this hilarious especially since for that to work, the vast majority of gamers that would buy Red Steel would have to properly know how to use a katana, which they don't. Same as in WiiBoxing. Sure it would be nice if it was more accurate than it is now, but for it to be a true boxing simulation like a lot of people complained about it NOT being, gamers would have to know how to box...which many don't.
So why can't these gamers and now so-called editors and journalist from various sites and publications can't seem to grasp the concept that one-to-one motion for many games WOULD NOT WORK because it forces the gamer to actually now how to do these tasks in reality.
The CNet article is trash and should be ignored. it's still too early in the race and many of their points are the "flavor of the month" variety that have already been discussed to death in some cases long before the PS3 launched. Nothing like a johnny-come-lately story to scare up traffic with a dead topic because it's a slow news day.

although ill agree theres always flaws
for 700 bucks they should be minimal to zero
for 500 bucks they should be minimal to a few
for 250, you get what u pay for, but still, should be minimal
all consoles are expensive the wii being 250 is only cheap by comparison, 250 is alot of money for a half ass system, and 700 is wayyyyyyyy to much for sucha a flawed knock off of a 360 system
allthough i do love the wii : )

That's exactly the problem with motion controls - how can you scale the controls to accomodate a wide range of player skills? I recently played Super Swing Golf with a friend who's never played golf. He was hacking at the virtual ball like he was swinging a baseball bat, and getting no where in the game. Meanwhile, I swing a Pangya almost every swing and the game isn't really challenging me.

Perhaps a little ps3 defence from me for a change might be in order.
A lot of these issues that are plaguing the ps3 are along the same lines that plagued the 360. Time and updates addressed the vast majority of issues. The big question is can Sony do this within a reasonable amount of time?
The upscaling is a big issue for people who can't get 720p. A firmware fix can make this right, but Sony still is dragging thier feet in regards to this.
The price on the other hand, is a major issue regarding the marketshare Sony is expecting. $600 for a console is not an impulse buy. A $300 price point is however. Sony can move a lot more with a cheaper price, but judging from Phil Harrison's attitude, it's not likely within the next couple of years. They could be on thier way to one with the software emulation the European audience is getting, but this is just a 'stripped' down ps3 as it were. The will be in the exact same situation as Microsoft was whenthe 360 launched and the BC llist was woefully lacking. It's improved significantly since launch, but there are many gems that deserve recoding for.

Sigh*
Don't you get it yet? Let me tell you a little something. I remember when I bought my 360 in 2005, I remember buying it because I wanted to play some true HD gaming the moment it came out. I saw everything it had to offer with its Live service and thought, hey this isnt a bad buy right now. Then the PS3 news started to trickle in. Sony kept saying things like "The next generation of gaming doesnt start until we say it does" and stating that XBOX 360 owners aren't really playing games in true HD. Also who can forget the 4D comments. At the time of all these comments I was afraid that my purchase of my 360 was an erroneous one, I felt that maybe I bought too early into the whole HD gaming hype. I was afraid of the cell processor's hyped potential and that Sony would drop a system that would make my eyes burn with glee. I thought for a moment that the xbox 360 was was xbox 1.5. Then the system was released and guess what my fears of the PS3 being heads and shoulders above the 360 were just paranoid delusions brought upon by overzealous paranoid Sony execs. Early reports indicate that the 360 graphics outshine the PS3 graphics, early tech analysis is stating that the xbox 360's potential graphically and systematically may be able to surpass and sustain higher performance levels than the ps3. So what is the reason for all the Sony backlash? Because they promised that they would release a system ahead of its time, because they stated that anyone who bought an xbox 360 was a damn fool for paying for old technology, because they promised gamers a video game system of unrivaled performance. They didn't and a lot of consumers like myself feel hoodwinked and screwed over. That is the reason for all the anger.
steve17 @ Feb 27th 2007 6:42PM
ok. im going to make a point to somewhat defend sony and somewhat bash their stupidity.
everyone screaming for a price cut: its not as simple as: o we over priced it, our bad. this isnt a walmart roll-back okay?
sony took an $800 million loan to launch the ps3. not to mention the launch went fucking HORRIBLY!!! plus every single unit sony sells loses them $240. with no games worth buying, they cant simply rely on games to equal it out in the end like other consoles.
so there^^^^ was my point showing how sony is in a pickle that they are having a hard time dealing with. no one can blame them for being panicked and not having a clue how to solve this problem. because frankly: a price cut IS NOT an option for them at this exact instant okay?
but to bash the shit out of them: they did it all to themselves. all of it. they over hyped and under delivered. they tried to hard to pack the ps3 full of high tech shit that frankly no one will "work more hours to buy"
and i dont think there has ever been a worse launch to hype comparison in the history of gaming. the ps3 was the most hyped game console EVER! people were willing to kill to get one. people thought it would be like playing a movie. NOPE! sony fed the public all their bullshit "4d graphics" (what the fuck is 4d????????) and promised graphics that nothing could EVER compare to.
launch day: u get home, u just spent %720 for a ps3 and 2 new games. u set it up start playing. "WHAT THE FUCK AM I LOOKING AT?????" its beefed up ps2 graphics. the games dont look bad by any means. but they are nowhere close to the now comically overstated graphics sony promised.
SONY: U FUCKED US, AND U FUCKED URSELF!!
let me rephrase: u didnt fuck me, cause i wasnt stupid enough to buy ur shit. but u fucked about 1.5 million so far.
Striderhayasa @ Feb 27th 2007 6:51PM

but Nintendo already demonstrated the solution. Just play WiiTennis. the key is to simplify the controls so that one-to-one isn't needed but wildly flaiing around doesn't work either. Balance the controls so that skill is still required. Look at Zelda. One to one wasn't required at all. It wasn't perfect mind you, but it provided an experience unlike any other. The idea is sound. One-to-one is awesome for something like WiiBowling or anything along that line, but how do you get one to one motion for a spiderman game? Or a Ninja game for that matter?
Killer @ Feb 27th 2007 7:05PM

Just got a great deal on a PS3. Some dude posted locally on a forsale usenet. He bought two units at launch and tried to flip them ebay but failed to sell this one. He sold it to me unopened, with the receipt for $100 less than retail here in Canada and no taxes. Gotta say, I don't know why people are b*tching about the responsiveness of the Sixasis motion control like I read in the reviews. It works very, very well in fl0w. I'm just playing demos now. My one gripe is that the online downloads are slow. (How does 4.5+ hours sound for a 600mb download?...thought so.) Anyway, I'm very impressed by the machine so far. It is definitely well made...and that's compared to several friends' X360's I've handled. Setup was a snap, I'm streaming audio and video from the PS3 now to my PSP on the other side of the house. I have high hopes for the releases to come, starting in March. Don't kid yourself, this console is for real. At least for me anyway...now that I'm $600 CAD lighter...oh yeah rent is tomorrow...hmmm...

Right now I have a Wii. excellent console with a lot of future going for it.
I'm still waiting to see which one will become my second console. The Ps3 has no games right now and the xbox360 seems like faulty hardware. By Christmas 2007 the Ps3 will get a few more game that warrant a purchase and the xbox360 will get a hardware revision that maybe will correct the red ring problem. Both consoles are fucking awesome if you have an HDTV but I don't wanna invest in something that might give me problems or stay gathering dust 4 months later...
Striderhayasa @ Feb 27th 2007 7:33PM
@steve
well said and i can't disagree. I was one of those people that was calling Sony's bullshit for what it was. I was dissed for it by the fanboys and ridiculed for questioning Phil Harrison and Ken Kutaragi.
But let me add to your comments, Sony lied to their fanbase before with the PS2 and it worked. It worked beautifully. Sony fans bought the PS2 and defended it even when the only "game" they had worth owning at launch was the Matrix. I remember when Sony launched the "Wait" campaign against the Dreamcast. Some people that were considering buying a Dreamcast did just that...waited....for the PS2. Of course, comparing games like Tekken Tag to the stellar Soul Caliber on DC didn't sway many people even though Soul Caliber is head and shoulders better than Tekken as an example. Sony relied on hype, lies and misinformation to sell their product and it worked. To the tune to 120 million units sold and counting.
PSP is starting to make the rounds. Sony wants to take portable gaming out of the ghetto since...by their definition, portable gaming has always been substandard. PSP would usher in a new age of portable gaming goodness giving gamers the power of a PS2 in their hands with everything from wide screen displays, to awesome downloadable content, movies, wireless internet functionality... PSP would be the future with Gran Turismo on PSP leading the way. So...how'd that turn out?
You see...sony's problem has always been overhyping and underdelivering. Let's break it down...Sony has NEVER had great first party development...ever. In order to truly walk the walk...sony would have to deliver content on their hardware that 3rd parties would be hard pressed to match. Sound familar? Sony never did this. Instead, 3rd party support was always the biggest selling point for any PS brand. Look at PSP. When the shit was hitting the fan and DSL started rocking their world, Sony should have answered the call by releasing stellar first party content on THEIR platform to show the gaming community...THIS is what PSP can do for gaming. It's their unit, they have to set the standard and the example.
Did sony do this? no? As a result, 3rd parites were quick to take what games they had on PS2 and shovel them onto PSP and why not? it's almost the exact same hardware give or take. If fans liked it on PS2 they'll love it on the go right? Wrong. Piss Poor battery life, only one analog nub and ridiculous load times killed that. Again, the alarm bells are ringing, Did sony answer the call? hmmm...kinda....a few titles here and there (I'm looking at you Kill Zone and Syphon Filter) but these proved to be nothing in the face of Animal Crossing, Brain Age and Mario Kart.
So here we are in 2007, Sony still doesn't have a clue. instead of being the example on their own hardware, the two most anticipated titles for PS3 are MGS 4 from Konami and FFXIII from SquareEnix. Sony still isn't the driving force of cutting edge game development on their hardware on average. It's still the 3rd parties. 3rd parties that are eye balling the greener pastures of 360 and in some cases the Wii.
If Sony wants to turn this around, first and foremost, focus on gaming and stop it with this "PS3 is a computer, you don't need the PC" bullshit. Second...either demote or fire Ken Kutaragi and Phil Harrison. Third. Get some consistent A+ in-house development with better development tools.
Since the NES noone has outdeveloped or outsold Nintendo on their hardware. When Sony dominated with PS and PS2, Nintendo was able to weather the storm because of their superior development. Nintendo makes their fair share of dumb ass mistake even with DS and the Wii but they are the company that usually sets trends. Sony is the company that usually follows them. Don't believe it, look at the jack-of-all trades, master of none technology in the PSP and now to some degree the PS3.
James @ Feb 27th 2007 7:35PM
The article is actually good in that it is not steeped in the usual "this is why the Xbox is better" fanboy style, but in a "these are the things that can be improved to make the PS3 better" style.
For example. The CNET guy has offered the most rational criticism of the PS3's price I've ever seen. It's not that extra $100 isn't coupled with a good value (Blu-ray, which is a much better value than the $200 HD DVD add-on), but it's simply that products need to reach certain prices to be mass-market successes and the PS3 is further from that point than the competition.
Also, many of his criticisms would apply to the 360 as well. (HDMI troubles for PS3 translates to no HDMI for 360; Web browser troubles for PS3 translates to no web browser for the 360, etc.).
Feature for feature, the PS3 and 360 aren't too different and the gap will shrink with time (Jake above gets this... finally a rational comment). When it comes down to it, everybody hates the PS3 because of the TONE OF CORPORATE EXECUTIVES. Just look at Leobebes and Steve17 up there. They don't say one thing against the console, just bitch about Sony executives.
If there is a stupider reason to hate something, I can't think of it. Don't let suits control your emotions... look at the facts and make rational choices.

#39, thanks for summarising all the spin the xbot army can muster so that they can be demolished at one go.
1. 4 years eh? You sure about that? Positive? You have a time machine to verify that?
No, precedent: xbox1 4 years versus PS2 7 years. And notice Sony's strong statements on future-proofing versus complete silence from MS.
2. Multiplayer for 200usd? Not sure what Xbox Live membership YOU have, but I'm pretty darn sure it's the same one I'm paying 50 for.
50/year = 200 for the (short) 4-year life. Or, if you want a year-wise comparison, the 200 dollar extra you pay for the PS3/8 year life = 25 USD/year. See how easy it is when you spin?
3. Inadaquate hard drive space for what? Games? More space for saves than I'll ever use. Demos? I delete them. What do you do with them?
Ask MS - they are the ones bringing out a 120GB 360. Of course some of us want to KEEP more than a few demo / download game / savegame. And with the awful download limit on 360, sure, you wont need more than 12GB.
4. No B/C?
Still better than MS: started with near 0% and is still nowhere near 100%. Lets see what Sony delivers?
5. Quality issues? I've been using a launch day 360. No issus for me at all.

god damn smik you are really a blinded fanboy. i like the ps3 and the 360. own both. i have a wii too. i can complain about each of them in their own right (with the wii i can complain all day but ill leave that alone). i dont think MS did a terrible job with the 360. i think they had problems (still are with some things) but i dont think the ps3 launched without any problems. and i definently dont think their strategy for the future is perfect. i think MS and Sony eventually will be fairly even when this gen is all over. point to FF and MGS and whatever else but MS isnt doing to shabby either. who knows how good blue dragon is? or lost odyessy? they could be fantastic, but probably not as good as FF. what is sony's response to gears or halo? resistence? a good game but not exactly on par. i think each console will have their strengths and weaknesses, but to blindly bash one over the other is stupid. now the wii... go ahead, there really is no defense.

hoho! I did NOT just read that the Playstation brand is synonymous with "quality", did I??
How many stories did we hear about PS2s that crapped on people? I really do wonder how many of those 110 million consoles are re-buys. I'd guess in the neighborhood of around 10 million.
And make no mistake- we heard the same shit about the PS1 being a cheap piece of crap, too.
I can assure you that it's a VERY short matter of time before the stories of PS3's being bricked start bursting out.
Oh, don't get me wrong- I'm sure that with Microsoft's reluctance the release the failure rate of the 360 to the public, it's probably REALLY high. Given their silence, probably higher than anything Sony could ever hope to fuck up.
But *DON'T* try and tell people that Sony, especially when it comes to Playstations, is "quality", either.
Oh, and I'll also bet anybody a Happy Meal at McDonalds that the PS3 does less than 50% backwards compatibility.

Saying the words quality hardware and sony in the same sentence is total blasphemy. You should be ashamed to even kid yourself. I know maybe 2 people out of the hundreds that have owned the same ps2 without ever having to replace it. And 1 of them has dvd issues. There was a time when Sony meant awesome stereo equipment that was unmatched in quality. They have totally went down the crapper. I am old enough to remember that time. Don't waste your time on defending their hardware as quality. Its like buying an HP computer(which I own lol). Sure its alot of goods for the price you pay but you damn well know you are not getting the top shelf quality parts. But alas my friends.... thats why you should get an extended warranty.
Now for Final Fantasy. It is not the best set of RPGs. Yes there were a couple epics FF's to come out. For me I've played through almost all of them and still I can only say I was highly fond of 1(US) 3(JP) 3(US) 7 and 9(which was just ok).
Now I am not gonna sit here and spew garbage about PS3 this and that. I am only gonna say that the 360 does have some RPG offerings that look decent as well. Lost Odyssey looks really cool. With microsoft being so closely tied to the PC game industry, I don't see why they shouldn't have a ton of MMORPGs and some very decent regular rpgs. I surely hope you wont buy a PS3 for just MGS4, Killzone 2, and FF13. It is more important that a large amount of games come out for the ps3 in order for people to justify why they should buy one.
Every console has their exclusives. Most people will buy a system based on what they like but I think the time for just one dominant system is over. And thank god for that because I don't think I could deal with the snotty arrogance coming from any of the big 3 this time.
I would like to see the wii have some decent RPGs this time around (looking at you SE!!! WTF????). But I have to also agree with one of the above statements. I wish there was one machine that could doo everything from all three offering. That would be so sick. SO yes I said it. I want a Playtendo 360. And I don't wanna just own all three. I want the wii remote to work with all of them as well as aving the option for using the VC controller. I could always dream.

Smik, did you even read my other post here before asuming blantent fanboyism?
Clearly not. Like the others who responded, Sony and quality have not been synonymous since the early 90s. I will present my two malfuntioning skippy the wonder system ps1s as evidence, and also my 2 ps2s, one of which suffered dde's like mad after the first year. My second was given away with no issues but I picked up a ps2 in early January, so I'll merely look at my ps2 and other consoles and smile when someone accuses me of being a fanboy.
The PS3 is early yet. None of my Sony systems showed any issues until just after the warranty was up on them. We'll see what happens. My guess is the heat from the unit will end up frying out something because Sony didn't put strong enough fans or heat sinks inside.
J @ Feb 28th 2007 12:06PM
Actually Sony put 3 heat pipes to draw the heat into the massive fan (for massive air damage lol) where it could exhaust without frying things. I don't know if the heat will fry anything out as long as you keep it ventilated. 2 phase heat exchangers (heat pipes or thermosyphons) are every effective for removing heat at a high rate. It should be fine.
