if its legit,
i wonder if he can find a way to do it just through the usb ports on the wii.

but then again,
they might not be wired to the right stuff needed.

but then again again,
this might be too good to be true.

but then again again again, (last time i promise)
why would he go through all the trouble
of drilling a hole in his wii? (no giggling...)

Umm... not that this isn't neat, but isn't the computer just a really big mod-chip ? Especially considering the parallel port connection needs to be soldered onto the Wii's motherboard. The headline makes it sound like its like playing bootlegs on the dreamcast.

Also can we get some more people working on playing IMPORT discs instead of bootlegs already ?

So he soldiered a port where none went before.

Where the Wii has no interface to connect to one on the system board.

With no API awaiting instructions for said call.

With no knowledge of Wii development, or the internals of the hardware, or the API for such.

... Well heck, I'm sold!

How about we stop figuring out how to play Bootlegs and find a way to play Homebrew games.....maybe even...*dare I say it*...LEGALLY?

Please, if you were following what was going on then you would know what what this does is temporarily patch the Wii firmware to allow for backups. Not sure if for imports.
I think it's SYNDiCATE's "iso loader". The thing with this is once you turn off the Wii, the patch is lost, so you have to connect it to a PC every time, apply the patch and run the game... this is not as comfortable as a modchip, but then again you could mod the Wii and mod chips to run via parralel ports for a fast swap and disconnect. I believe someone has done something like that already.
I hear that sometimes you'll need to turn of the Wii for some time to get normal functionality back, so no idea what that's about.

In future, read the YouTube comments as well... I cannot say if they were posted before hand though (YoutTube timestamps suck)

#7: Backups, *real* backups, have been legitimately useful ever since companies started distributing their games on flimsy pieces of plastic. Plus, it's a step on the way to imports (also legal). And in many cases, it's also a step on the way to...*gasp*...homebrew. You gotta walk before you can run.

^^lol

It hasnt even been a year yet, so these advancements in all of this modding etc. are just steps to the final goal. Playing backups flawlessly, with no consequences in terms of online play, will soon be here and Ill be the first to jump on it w00t!

OBJECTION!

His Wii's memory card slot is WHITE!! North American Wii units have Black memory card-controller input areas. Are they white for Japan or European units?

Nice catch, Drew. That's a good question.

Looking at Wii discs myself, I wouldn't be surprised if the CRC could be figured out. That would allow a bit-by-bit copy of the game DVDs. Usually you can't copy a game disc because of the different file system or hidden directories and files. But after you get past the CRC you should be able to do a bit-by-bit copy and completely fool the Wii with a disc that is 100% the same as the original game disc.

Of course, IIRC cyclic redundancy checks are like hashes, which, if strong enough, shouldn't give away the function, so cracking the Wii CRC may be a little harder than it looks at first.

Hey lets all go out and solder a parallel port to our Wiis. Yeah nice job in doing that. However no one but this one person knows the pin out to the cable. So until you know how the pin out is being ran, good luck in shorting out your system.
