Behold: concept art for the Prince of Persia movie

ComingSoon has posted new images and concept art for several upcoming Disney films, almost all of which are likely to be adapted into stunningly derivative and altogether depressing video games. One of the movies, however, signifies the reverse situation of having been a game first -- a very good one, in fact. The cinematic adaptation of Ubisoft's acrobatically inclined Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, will be produced by Jerry "Needs More Splosions" Bruckheimer.
Check out some of the early concept images of the film while you agonize over the many ways in which Jerry can bring the franchise to ruin. Vin Diesel as the Prince? Explosive carriage chases? A soundtrack featuring Usher? A dark and angsty MySpace reimagining that has the protagonist fighting scantily clad warrior women? Wait, that last one sounds familiar somehow...

How much do you want to bet that this will suck balls?

To be honest, PoP is in way better hands than any other video game to movie adaptation ever. I wouldn't expect it to be mind blowing, but it could be a good popcorn flick.

Frankly, since it's done by Disney, there'll be at least some semblence of quality. I'm more afraid of the after-effects: A game based on the movie? An animates series after?

Jerry Bruckheimer? Gimme a break. It'll make money but... quality? Maybe in production values but not much else.
mrfong @ Mar 1st 2007 10:14PM
wait, are all of these images on the site of real movies? If so, that's friggin awesome because there is a 3rd toy story coming out!
TheScantronman @ Mar 1st 2007 10:52PM
If this is done in any way, shape, or form done similar in style to Pirates of the Carribbean, then this movie is going to do it big at the box office and will be a fun, entertaining film. The fanboys will hate it, because that's what fanboys do. I'm excited at what could be the Spider-Man for video game-based movies, hopefully opening the door for other quality adaptations. I'm looking forward to it.

I hope its good... Sands of Time is one of my top 10 favourite games (The most recent game on that list too!) so it better be amazing... *Grumble*
@ #4: Yes, they are all real movies. Toy Story 3 has been in preproduction for a long time, originally by Disney's now defunct in-house CG animation team (The one behind Chicken Little and The WIld, blech!) When John Lasseter (Head of Pixar) became one of the heads of Disney, he scrapped the Toy Story 3 project and started it fresh as a Pixar project.
I like the fact that Pirates 3 and Prince Caspian have dates on their logos. Gets me kinda excited, haha.

"I'm excited at what could be the Spider-Man for video game-based movies"
There were plenty of reat Comic-book movies before Spider-Man. What about Superman The Movie from 1978, or the first X-Men? If anything, I'd attribute the first X-Men movie to opening the gates for successful comic book adaptions rather than Spider-Man.

could be worse, uwe could be doing it

I'm more worried about the inevitable sequel. It would sure confuse the non-video game playing public if the prince suddenly became an annoying, rage-filled asshole. Actually, that still confuses me...

Nice!! What's the name of this concept artist? I didn't even know concepts were done in oil on canvas anymore. I thought studios favored the speed and ease of digital media.
Johnny @ Mar 2nd 2007 12:17AM
the guy supposedly playing the prince is white.
not interested.
Oliver @ Mar 2nd 2007 1:16AM
One thing with Disney behind this it will definatly lead to a completely inevitable sequal. No question, they like have some kind of problem with making a perfictly great singlular film. Might still be Ok though, could work out OK

The way I see it, it MAY stand a chance of being well-executed in the hands of Bruckheimer. I would write it off as a failure if it were in the hands of Disney alone. Disney has been bereft of original ideas and proper execution for years now. Look at their successful franchises in recent years - The Incredibles, Cars, Pirates of The Carribean, Kingdom Hearts, The Chronicles of Narnia: Pixar, Bruckheimer, Square-Enix, book adaptations and IMO an obvious attempt to cash in on LOtR/ Harry Potter craze. By themselves, Disney has not been great for a while now, with wave after wave of unnecessary sequels and "special edition" re-releases. Yes, they have quite a history that is still popular and profitable (like Nintendo - Mario, Metroid, Zelda), but how about augmenting them with new ideas too (like Nintendo - Pikmin, Nintendogs, DS and Wii)?
t_m @ Mar 2nd 2007 7:27AM
that last one looks suspiciously like the site of that mass pilgrimmage in mecca.. if it is then they'll not be popular...
Sam G. @ Mar 2nd 2007 11:52AM
I just want them to include a Leap of Faith in a nod to the old PC version of the game. Do that, and everything else will be forgiven.
RogueJedi86 @ Mar 2nd 2007 3:17PM
That concept art looks very good. Looks like old paintings of the Bible. I'd love to see more. If they can maintain the quality of detail that they have in the concept art, then it looks to be a very great movie.
Kodanshi @ May 29th 2007 7:37AM
The 3rd one does NOT look like the Kaabah (the cube–shaped mosque) in Mecca! To me it looks more like the Zoo in the Sands of Time game.
Kodanshi @ May 29th 2007 9:40AM
OK, I’ve done some searching around after I happed upon that 3rd picture on a book cover! Turns out Eugene Alexis Girardet (1853-1907) painted it and called it ‘Sacred Fire of Jerusalem’. You can see its details on this website:
