EA releases actual gameplay footage of Skate (PS3/360)
EA's doing a fine job in fostering street cred for their upcoming Tony Hawk killer despite their being the largest game making corporation in existance. If I had some hip skater talk to describe the above video, I'd insert it here. I don't, so I'll just say the footage looks "sick." Skate hits the PS3 and 360 June 15.
[Thanks, Nelson]

The above footage looks sick, but seems boring.
sheppy @ Mar 1st 2007 8:23PM
Graphically, impressive. Gameplay? Wow, we are finally seeing what happens when EA makes Tony Hawk. Much like LOTR:Third Age was what happens when EA makes FFX. Seems uninspired and rather than blazing a new path forward, they merely fall in line and hope to outhype the hawk.
Granted, Tony Hawk has officially alienated me as a casual player long ago so.... yeah.
fffunfarm06---xbl @ Mar 1st 2007 8:24PM
like the guy above. looks really good, but not that interesting. it makes me rather buy a skate board and learn than press buttons
SynikaL @ Mar 1st 2007 8:27PM
Umm, I don't know if it's the video quality or what, but the graphics really seemed to take a hit since the last time I've seen footage of this title.
Really don't see what's so "sick" about this footage. Gameplay just seems derivative of the TH series, and as I said, I wasn't impressed with the graphics.
Just looks like another example of broken promises created out of developer tech demoes shooting for the stars and failing to even breach atmosphere.

Ok, here's where it gets interesting. See that footage above, how good does it look? I think it looks insanely amazingly realistic. Superb graphics that could only be pulled off with superior hardware. Does it look fun? Ummmmm.....no. This is a perfect example of graphics making a game look amazing and probably would hold your interest while you stare slack-jawed at the quality of the design. But once that wears off you need substance. I'm not trying to start a fanboy war but the fact remains, it looks about as fun as watching a tv show of a guy following around a skateboarder for 5 minute intervals.

God, Gamevideos' player sucks balls. It can't stream to save it's life, and it won't let you download the whole thing! F**king genius!

Sorry for the triple post.
Is it just me, or has this site been actin' real funny lately? Often times the site loads and fails to up images or gives me this weird code. Sometimes I have to refresh 2 or 3 times to view the site proper.

Kimosabae - Yeah, I'm getting that too. I'll post something and then it won't show up so I'll think I messed it up so I'll post it again and then they'll both show up and I look like an idiot for double posting. Something's fishy on the 'stiq
MosquitoControl @ Mar 1st 2007 8:39PM
Looks just like a skate video, as mentioned.
But is that fun? I doubt it.
Tony Hawk might be getting tired, and the graphics might be far from this. But the fun of Tony Hawk is finding lines and figuring out how to string huge combos together. The fun is achieving goals. The fun is learning how to fight your hands to get them to do what you want and get coordinated.
Obviously this isn't showing what the gameplay is, just the mechanics... but realistic doesn't look like it makes for un.
required @ Mar 1st 2007 8:40PM
Myke, I don't think it looks as good as you do and I think it just might be a lot more fun to play than you think it will be.
thegamerthatcould @ Mar 1st 2007 8:44PM
hey everyone can someone tell me if this is gameplay footage from ps3 or 360 and another? has there been any video footage of skate besides this and if so can someone post the link ? thanks
Peter @ Mar 1st 2007 8:44PM
Graphics are looking great, but it looks like the animations need a bit of work.
cr1 @ Mar 1st 2007 8:44PM
Between the seemingly uneventful gameplay and the annoying 5-second looped "music", this one gets a "pass". Looks really nice visually, but unless the world is populated by other skaters via online, seems like a boring waste of time (and even that may not be enough unless there's massive pvp skating carnage ;-)
KC @ Mar 1st 2007 8:46PM
It's more fun to play than other skate games.
Casual gamers can pull of cool tricks simply by moving the analog stick and hardcore gamers will love the free flowing controls. Grinding is a lot more fun than pushing a button to lockon to a rail as well.
adam d @ Mar 1st 2007 9:03PM
^ cool, so how much is EA paying you?

I've always wanted to see a realistic skateboarding game to come out and when I found out about Skate a few months ago I got pretty excited. Now after watching this it seems like I may finally be getting the skateboarding game I've been hoping for.
Hyperfludd @ Mar 1st 2007 9:36PM
Looks sweet. Graphics..look odd, but that may be cause of the player.
d-dove @ Mar 1st 2007 9:41PM
It really amazes me how hard EA gets hated on....despite putting out some great titles. Top dog syndrome I guess. And the game looks pretty good, a bit more realistic then Hawk, and I guess thats what there aiming for since it is not supposed to be a combo fest like TH. But whats up with ripping off Mark Ecko's Getting Up logo....hmmm.

#19:
My interest in this game has been sold with that link. Sounds very intriguing, gameplay wise. If they can live up to that promise of being a inuitive, but difficult to master, I'll be in line for it day one.
This industry's dying for more multiplayer games with a more difficult entry level outside of fighting games and FPSs IMO (and even those are sickeningly easy these days).
This sounds like it could be the skateboarding genre's Virtua Fighter. That has me VERY excited.

Negativecool @ Mar 1st 2007 9:55PM
Granted this is just a snippet of info regarding what the game will actually be like, I would have to agree that this looks boring as hell as is. I hope EA is smart enough to realize that Tony Hawk is what it is because skaters can do tricks in it that defy the laws of....pretty much all science.
If they instead come out with some sort of skater simulator with good graphics, they aren't going to sell many titles.
SirRoxen @ Mar 1st 2007 9:56PM
From the short clip the animations and physics looked superb.
That being said, my first impression upon hearing the song was, hey, that was in Tony Hawk 4. :P
James @ Mar 1st 2007 10:02PM
Tony Hawk = Michael Bay
Skate = Christopher Nolan
Make of that what you will.
Matt Rix @ Mar 1st 2007 10:02PM
I can't believe how many people say the gameplay is bad or boring *WITHOUT EVEN PLAYING IT*. Come on! At least give the game a chance. This game looks *REALISTIC* and I imagine it could be really fun if they give you enough control.
AzaMcWazza @ Mar 1st 2007 10:33PM
#7 - Donkey's ones at that.
Fugumss @ Mar 1st 2007 10:56PM
I personally think that looks AMAZING. Reminds me of a next gen Thrasher: Skate and Destroy (ps1). I can't wait for this. It looks realistic, not like tony hawk. Actual physics. That'll alienate a lot of the casual crowd, but I for one will love it.
Todd Rabanus @ Mar 1st 2007 11:00PM
obviously noone who has posted yet has actually boarded before. i board and have liked the tony hawk series but it always left something to be desired. tony hawk is an over the top unrealistic skateboarding, but yet fun. skate looks to be a more realistic game that looks like it depends on skill to pull off a trick as opposed to how many tricks you can pull off while flying 200 feet through the air.
and i absolutely love the skate video, behind the skater view. it seems like EA isn't trying to overthrow tony hawk, but bring something new to the skate genre.
Jack @ Mar 1st 2007 11:24PM
Sit down with a real skater and watch him play any of the Tony Hawk games past THPS3. They'll turn down the skater stats as low as they can go to make it more realistic, and comb the levels for objects that resemble set-ups you'd come across at any concrete park in America. They won't go for any of that combo-stringing, Bam Margera McTwist-over-the-helicopter crap.
This is going to sell big to anyone who's EVER been even slightly disgusted with THPS.
Myke @ Mar 1st 2007 11:42PM
"This is going to sell big to anyone who's EVER been even slightly disgusted with THPS."
So it'll sell well with .7% of the gaming public. You don't build a franchise or make money off of a game by appealing to a market of gamers who can do all of the things in real life that they are being asked to do in the game. I used to board alot, and the reason I liked Tony Hawk was because I can't do that shit in real life. If I want to skate around a skate park and do normal, non-over-the-top tricks, I can just go and grab my own board and save myself $60, thanks.
King @ Mar 1st 2007 11:52PM
I'm interested in this and I think it looks great. The problem I have with the Tony Hawk games are the sick combos (Project 8 was a little better than some of the recent titles).
If you have ever seen a video of a real skater going down the street it looks more like this video for skate.
I'm getting tired of TH with its super fast 35 mph grinds, grinds/manuals that last 10 minutes and you finish it off with a 900 before you touch the ground.
I'm looking for a little more realism.
**if this is a double post sorry, Joystiq ate my first comment**
mark @ Mar 2nd 2007 12:56AM
"Just looks like another example of broken promises created out of developer tech demoes shooting for the stars and failing to even breach atmosphere."
Not really -- they set out to make a more realistic skateboarding game and it looks like they did it. No more 50 trick combos, no grinding on telephone wire, etc. I'll buy it.
Ben Tremblay @ Mar 2nd 2007 1:49AM
There's a feel to the gameplay and camera angles that makes me definitely want to check out this game.
Dave @ Mar 2nd 2007 2:39AM
It looks good to me. Actually, I was getting tired of the Tony Hawk series. The first game was way more casual. You could pursue a career ferociously--or you could just skate around the neighborhood. Either way, it was fun. I don't need some jerk named Bam who takes baseball bats to the nuts for fun and profit yelling in my ear.
Dave @ Mar 2nd 2007 2:40AM
I should add that I was talking about the Tony Hawk Underground series.
Tom @ Mar 2nd 2007 3:33AM
It would be cool if you could skate around an entire city the size of NYC, get chased away by cops and security guards, have people jumping outta your way left and right, even go down into the subways n' such. Also, the animation needs to be a lot more fluid.
Mikeo @ Mar 2nd 2007 5:49AM
Next-gen skating, take 2? I'm sold. Really.
After reading it on IGN, I think it's MUCH better than that disgraceful SSX wannabe Downhill Jam in terms of controls.
And it's Black Box EA. So they (hopefully) won't give us a NFS for this year. :D
t_m @ Mar 2nd 2007 7:02AM
looks pretty true to life (except most skaters i know would have bailed 3 or four times in that run).
the problem is, true to life skating just isn't that much fun to play on a video game (or doesn't appear to be).
Its the sort of thing that is fun when you DO IT not fun when you play it. Kinda like manhunt.
Most real life skating involves a lot of repetition , visually rather uninteresting flips off small kerbs, and a lot of bailing.
I guess the one way itmight be great is if they have managed to make some great controls.. which actually somehow capture the feeling of pulling the moves. (kinda like theslow motion "be the feet" mode in the new TH.
Anyone remember Rollin on the xbox? Thought not. That was an attempt to do a mildly realistic inline skating game.. and it was definatley more realistic than Aggressive inline and THPS. But it wasnt that much fun for long.. and i'm not sure it was fun AT ALL for non skaters.
The only extreme sport that needs a realistic version is snowboarding.. much as i love SSX3, sometime it'd be nice tohave a game where you can just chill out and carve around the backcountry without all the attitude.. and with slightl more realistic controls.
RUSKULL @ Mar 2nd 2007 8:33AM
Graphics are definetly impressive, but the game looks about as inspired as it's name.
Julian Weisser @ Mar 2nd 2007 10:01AM
The camera angle looks just like a Skate video but it will be a pain in the @ss in a game enviroment...
Gonads @ Mar 2nd 2007 10:19AM
okay... looks pretty and all, but 2 things:
1) where'd gravity go? the skater hangs in the air oddly before landing, no true acceleration due to gravity, makes me think of the whole "uncanny valley" thing but just due to the physics.
2) if you're going for a realistic chase camera... make it realistic! it's glued far too much to the skater, bobbing with each jump, sliding impossibly over obsticles, etc... i'd prefer to see more realism in camera movement if they're going for a realistic game
Norm @ Mar 2nd 2007 11:44AM
Dude watch a skate video filmed in the past 5 (or 10) years if you don't think that looks like good follow-filming. and the way he ollies looks like a realistic shifty if you ask me. If you go frame by frame, you can see its not the skater being floaty, its the body compressing then his legs straightening.
also
F**k ea in general, but this game is definitely something I will pick up.

THIS GAME IS THE BOMB.
Russell @ Mar 2nd 2007 4:36PM
Looks pretty "realistic", but also seems slow and uninteresting. The tony hawk games are fun BECAUSE they aren't realistic. I mean THUG2 was too whacky, and they toned it down for the following two...
My main problem with this is... The environment looks SO BORING. ITs SO DAMN PLAIN.
savvydoc @ Mar 2nd 2007 7:34PM
You guys are crazy calling this boring. This looks really awesome to me. I'm not a skater but I've been turned off to the zany circus that is the tony hawk series ever since like.. th2.
I showed this vid to my roommate who is a skater and he is 'stoked'. :-P
B-Mo @ Mar 3rd 2007 12:51AM
Didn't EA Make Grind Session for the PS1, or was that some other developer? At any rate, I liked GS better than TH when that was all that was there to be had... The controls were more defined, IMO. If anything it might just be worth taking a peek at for me.
