You know another title that would have worked "Microsoft finally cracks the top 30 in a month"

Thank you, 43! It has nothing to do with how a company supports older systems, it’s all about which system is on top. The NES and SNES had games coming out long after the launch of the next generation, as did the PS1. It’s only natural that the PS2 would follow. Additionally, it’s not entirely up to first parties. The Dreamcast STILL has games coming out for it and Sega hasn’t even been in the console business for years. If Sony decided to actively kill PS2 publishing, third parties would be outraged since there are still a lot of games in development and things obviously still sell on the PS2.

smik:
"But we can guess. based on 1. what happened in the previous generation and 2. The COMPLETE lack of statements from MS / Nint regarding console life, unlike Sony."
1) Uh, no. If the previous generation was always a good indication as to how the next generation would play out, Nintendo would've dominated the market with N64 and GameCube, just like they did with NES and Super NES (Well, actually, SNES and Genesis were pretty even... so even the NES generation wasn't an indication to how the Super NES would play out!).
2) Uh, maybe it's because reps from Nintendo and Microsoft know that the future is unpredictable, so you can't make claims like that, since it'll probably come back to bite you in the ass? Folks from Sony have said a lot of things that come back to haunt them...

I don't mind anyone liking the PS3 (although, I honestly feel you should wait to get one until more good games are out, and/or the price drops), but blind fanboyism like this is not okay. Same goes for the MS and Nintendo camps.

PSP has potential, but the DS is already a social phenomenon. I own both though, and neither of them get very much play time...

It's impressive that MHF2 sold more than 3/4 number of copies in the first week that MHF1 sold in its entire release of 65+ weeks

why is everyone stating the fact that microsoft will be releasing a new package at the end of the year (rumored) they are going with a 65nm instead of the 90nm chip, this will be driving down prices of production, therefore driving down not only heat issues (i haven't had any issues myself) but also the msrp. if only sony did that with the ps2 i wouldn't have had to buy 6 of them before i got one that worked for a year. And correct me if i'm wrong but didn't they redesign both the psone and ps2. If the xbox 360 continues to make money when an eventual xbox3 comes out then the 360 will be supported. Hell if the UMD made money sony might still be supporting that.

Software was definitely a success for all except PS3 and 360. A large chunk of that goes to the PSP. However, I curious as to how hardware sales will translate based on the MH2 sales.

My guess is that the DS still outsells it.

Damn, no MS fanboys in here but me :). Seriously though, there are some obnoxious Sony and Nintendo fans in here. Anyways, crackdown in the top 30 is impressive. I'd like to see the 360 at least do pretty will in Japan but I'm not holding my breath. Oh and sony does offer other versions of the consoles. PSX, though it was a media device as well as console.

I guess MH is the PSP's answer to Pokemon huh. Good for them and hopefully Sony can keep it up.

The DS did outsell the PSP in the same period. Not surprising though.

Yes, but according to preliminary reports, PSP outsold Wii and PS3 combined this week

I think its safe to say Monster Hunter Portable 2nd can be called this year's "killer app" for the PSP (DS will crush competition when Diamond and Pearl are released in North America, odd that the killer apps of the 07 for both PSP and DS are RPGs)

And i though smik was believable until he said the GameCube was "dead before 2005"
Resident Evil 4 would beg to differ

A big congratulations goes to Monster Hunter Freedom 2 from Capcom. Over 700,000 copies sold in its first week is quite impressive, and not just for a PSP game, but really, any system.

I'm also quite pleased to see four Wii games on the list. Four Wii, four DS, one PSP, and one PS2.

For this first time in ages, PSP got the majority of total sales in the Top 50 [there are many more individual DS games on the list, (particularly from 11-23), but PSP grabbed 43% overall with DS in second at about 33%].

If people are interested in hardware, here they are:
DS and DS Lite = 146,250 (15,501,000 Total)
PSP = 96,750 (5,201,750 Total)
Wii = 76,250 (1,734,500 Total)
PS3 = 20,250 (709,000 Total)
PS2 = 17,750 (22,046,750 Total)
Xbox 360 = 5,250 (355,750 Total)
GBA, SP, and Micro = 1,750 (16,664,500 Total)
GCN = 500 (4,020,250 Total)

It's crazy to see how fast DS has caught up to GBA...well, almost caught up.

That's disappointing. Xbox didn't sell it's usual 1-3 a week over there. That little entry on the charts always struck me as a bit of a "P.S." style entry. But it's gone this week.

I'm sorry, but only fucking faggots play monster hunter. I have about as much respect for those that play this dorky game than I do for people that play World of Warcraft. Get a life, and get a girlfriend you dweebs.
