Mashup: NES meets DVD and wins

Joystiq reader Zach has just spent countless hours, amounts of sweat, and possibly even ounces of blood by mashing up a Nintendo Entertainment System with a portable DVD player. The end result is a pretty swanky DVD player that even has a controller hooked up to it via USB to serve as the remote. It also plays nice with his PlayStation Portable, making this a completely bizarro world where Sony and Nintendo work things out and just get along.
Check out his Flickr album of the whole project here, and then swing by and check out the video of the whole thing if you're so inclined. It's an impressive amount of work and looks pretty darn cool. He even has the original Nintendo bag as a little carrying case for it! In fact, if these were for sale, we'd buy a couple of 'em. This may have just inspired us to dig the old NES out of the garage and give it a whirl. One day the sweet day will come when someone mods a PS3 into one of these things

I have seriously considered gutting my NES and putting the wii hardware in it. It would be so retro and next-get all at the same time, it would be cool. Like techno remixes of bryan adams songs!
heck you could even put the sensor bar into the NES casing and just have it sit in the middle of you TV. Ok, that parts a bad idea.

I'm still waiting for someone to mod an XBOX into an NES shell that will allow you to run Roms/Emulators off a DVD and still use the original NES control pads.

Mod a PS3 to play DVDs and play nice with a PSP? No one would ever think of that.

WHAT? NES can play back DVD's but the WII can't?

I had my own project I abandoned a while ago. I took a fat PS2, gutted it, installed a Yobo console, added an NES bay, and was getting ready to add an 8" LCD and a laptop battery to make a miniature NES setup. One day, I'll get around to finishing it.

The Hub interviewed Reggie. Can more factories solve the Wii shortage? Especially if next Christmas is worse?

To clarify my previous comment. The PS3 has to be modded to play DVDs?

I'm sick of seeing modded NES systems. Give me a modded Atari, Jag or Intellivision. How about a modded 64 that plays Xbox games.

Actually the controller just has a usb adapter in it. It's for use with an external storage device(aka the 400 Gig HDD I hook up to it, or PSP. I haven't tried an iPod yet but it does play *.m4a). I wanted to put the front panel display into a controller, but the controller is 7 wire, and the front panel is 8. and I didn't see an easy fix for that and just wanted to finish it. I just bought a dvr with usb, ilink, and mpeg4 support; so I was actually putting it up on the ebay or clist. You guys think any body would actually buy my JNESI? Any questions, comments, or criticisms are welcome. Thanks to all, and especially to Joystiq!!!

Sorry what I meant to say was, I was actually thinking about putting it up on Ebay or Clist.

Even as a Nintendo fanboy, I have to say that comment gets the awesome award.

Ahhhh, the NES. Is there honestly anything that you can't cram into that thing?

There's only so many left.. Stop hacking them up!!
