"Yippee, a thousand games... 1000 MAINSTREAM games... What about those games which don't suck? I know they're too few and far apart on the PS2 but they exsist."

Are you saying that it's hard to find non-sucking games on PS2 in general, or non-sucking mainstream PS2 games?

Either way, you're dead wrong.

PS2 has by far the best game library *ever* on *any* console in the history of gaming.

There is something for everyone, from mainstream titles to great Sony exclusives (Ratchet & Clank for example) to funky Japanese bizarreness.

(of course, if you only like Mario, Zelda, Metroid and Pokemon then you're out of luck)

"I heard it was as high as 90% of the PS2 library is utter crap. Either way, there's no garauntee here. "

The relative proportion of crap (and AAA titles, too) on PS2 is pretty much the same as it is on, say, Xbox and Cube. Just have a look at Metacritic and Gamerankings. It's all there. No need for hearsay.

However, the *absolute* number of killer titles for PS2 just crushes the competition and that's all that matters, really.

At least you don't have to worry about BC on the 360 because there are plenty of next gen games to play.

Just kidding.

BC is the most over-rated feature in a console I've ever heard of, though. Then again, I only have a PS2, GC, Dreamcast, and 360. But I don't even have any of the last-gen systems hooked up, now that I finished the new Zelda.

If I ever owned an Xbox and had some xbox games, I can pretty much guarantee you I wouldn't be playing them right now. Halo2 is the only game I've heard of any of my friends plugging into their 360.

Next gen ftw!

As much as I wish I could agree with you, Jake. I prefer convergence in my console. I hate having to hook up my Xbox anytime I have an urge for Steel Battalion, Jet Set Radio Future, or my friends and I want to play Guilty Gear X2. While it shouldn't be the focus of the console, functional BC is one hell of a plus in my book.

I just don't have the inputs to keep my Xbox and Xbox 360 hooked up at the same time. I usually play BC games in between decent 360 releases. Then again, if you buy a new game every month, you'd probably never get a chance to go back for some BC.

I agree with sheppy, I'd be mad as hell if Wii, being the second Nintendo console to use a disc, wasn't BC.

Sony says that they will support over 1000 games.

I think that the backwards compatibility will drop from 14.000 to 1.000 games. So we expect Sony to pay employees to test and write updates for like 13.000 other games. Not to forget that they dropped the hardware solution out of financial point of view.

The title should have been: "Over 13,000 less PS2 games to be compatible with Euro PS3". But hey we all know how Sony acts with facts.

@Vancaeyzeele

Where the hell are you getting these numbers? Not to mention, while PS3 is region free, the BC is not. In other words, Sony needs only concern themselves for the games released in Europe.

I mean, what's the purpose of making sure Beatmania IIXD Happy Sky works if your console is just going to say "Fuck you, that's a Japanese game?"

It may be a stupid question, but does anyone know what would stop Microsoft from releasing a software patch that could play PS2 games?

After all I can load any OS on my PC, Can play any DVD in any DVD player etc..

What exactly are the laws governing this that have always stopped games machines from offering sideways compatability?

First, realize that Sony can't test every game in existence. Perhaps they only asked developers to test games on an alpha version of the emulator, and they can only CONFIRM that "over 1,000" games work. The actual number that work is likely a lot more. Games have to be tested to show up on the compatibility list.

Second, Sony owns the IP for the PS2 architecture, unlike Microsoft's situation with the XBox. I'm skeptical about emulation, of course, but emulation does not have to suck by default. If they've tested over 1,000 games with the help of developers (and obviously, they will only test important games), it's perfectly reasonable to assume compatibility could be in the 90% range.

Stop bitching, and wait and see.
