It's a damn good thing Sony came to their senses, putting this behind them and letting Kotaku back into the fold was the only sane thing to do. Sony needs Kotaku if they want to appeal to gamers, and cutting them out of the press will only ensure that less news gets circulated.

No, Kotaku did not back down, they stuck with thier story and kept it posted. Sony is the one that backed down(and showed they were the bigger man while doing so) by inviting Kotaku back into their press conferences.

Kotaku didn't give anything up, Sony admitted they were wrong to ban Kotaku from press events and now the issue is settled.

Everyone defending Sony on this one is(pick one or more):
_plain stupid.
_a little kid that doesn't know what he's talking about.
_a plain stupid pathetic sad fanboy.
_obviously joking & being sarcastic.

Freedom of speech & press is an undisputed right, the work of a journalist is to tell the truth, search, dig & investigate for it, nothing can impeach a journalist to do so, the only exceptions are with matters of national security & non relevant private life facts. Would Kotaku have bowed & done as Sony asked they wouldn't have been a gaming journalist blog, they would have become a Sony propaganda site, the way Sony handled this matter shows so obviously that Kotaku was on their own right, as all they could do was try to blackmail them. Journalism intergrity can't be bought, Sony tough so, Kotaku proved them wrong! I've been quite critical about precedent work from Brian Crecente, to the point of being banned fom the Kotaku comment section, but I have nothing left to do than stand & applaud him on his stance, he sure defended well journalism & freedom of speach! Bravo!!!

ace: boohoo you baby! There is always some loser who has to bring up the 360 in any Sony article. I know everyone likes to take shots at #1 but come on.

Kotaku has lost a lot with me on this. Don't air your dirty laundry to your readers to get hits. I never commented on their site and I plan to stop reading it now. What a waste of everyones time.

And this just shows how much in bed Kotaku and Sony are.. I expect to see lots of pro-Sony spin coming from them now thanks to their little talk with each other.

Sony the damage is done... Your backpeddling makes you look even more stupid and weak..

That's being rather one-sided, don't you think? My opinion is that Sony planned all this (the blackballing and the apologising), along with the Sony/Immersion deal, in order to have Sony on everyone's minds come GDC. And they've mostly succedded.

What negative feedback did they get? The apologising practically cancelled out any bad-will on Sony, at least any that didn't previously exist. Also, since apologising is rarely on Sony's card, it probably earned them some favor too.

What I see is the Revolution/Wii debacle happening again. Lots of backlash, but people will forget (since Sony apologised after all). And a net positive publicity gain overall.

Sony: STFU or we'll blackball your ass.

It must be a slow news day when the topic of dicussion is how Sony treated a blog site. You guys scream freedom of speech and all that, and I agree, they have every right to do as they wish when it concerns rumors and news. But if you are going to excersice that freedom, you must accept the consequences of those actions.

I think Sony may have over reacted and added more value to that rumor. Alot of these will pop up, especially with the announcement that Sony has something huge up their sleeves. Not including this move, the Sony PR and marketing teams have realy been dropping the ball.

At least they have kissed and made up.

Joystiq and Kotaku are informative, but this is NOT JOURNALISM, it's a blog. Sony shouldn't be able to tell them what to post, but...

For all the BS they put on Sony, they ought to be glad they have access. They certainly are not entitled to it with the mob mentality the 'gamer l337' have against Sony.

From reading the article, the consensus at Sony is the same. They ought to be glad there's somebody who thinks internet blog sites deserve their attention.

The correct version goes like this
Kotaku: We heard a rumour, can we post it on so that our "invited" xbot readers can twist it into negative news
Sony: politely request you not to publish this as a friend, given all the support and access we have given you despite all the fact that you bashed our console so much?
Kotaku: fu.
Sony: Cool. But since you dont want to be friendly, we should take away the privileges that a friend gets
kotaku: whines cries bitches in public
Sony: okay, since you are going to be a bitch about it, at least we can behave like a grown up. So post your little "scoop" and feel happy about it bitch.

I'm going to ask some of you that are more level headed to look at this logically.

A lot of people here are talking about morally right or wrong.

But, was it any more morally righteous of Kotaku to disregard a request made by an associate, when the associate expresses his dismay that they didn't want that information revealed?

Now, many people are going to think, Kotaku is free to post whatever information they want to.

But then why isn't Sony also justified in doing what it said it will do, and is free to do, in ceasing to support a site that doesn't respect the company enough to comply with a request?

Just like Kotaku wasn't bound to not post information, Sony wasn't bound to support Kotaku.

But, now that Sony stated that they wish to cease supporting Kotaku, something they were free to do anyways, all of a sudden they are the ones blackballing Kotaku?

Does anyone else see the one sidedness of this?

I'm just playing devil's advocate here.

Congratulations to Kotaku for doing what they did right. You've won the support of your readers and shown them that you are willing to post anything that you think you should and you won't let anyone stop you from doing so.

However, you've also shown the industry what you're capable of, and I don't mean that in a good way.

You've basically shown the professionals out there that you can't be trusted with any information. You're also not afraid to sling some mud around, in the form of extravagant headlines and posting private e-mail conversations, in an attempt to prove yourself righteous and victorious.

Yeah, see, this is exactly why I always compare Sony to the Republican party and the SDF to Rush Limbaugh Hate Radio listeners.
Blame the media! It's ALWAYS their fault! We don't need no information! You're supposed to be stenographers!

You SDF half-wits ought to be ASHAMED of yourselves for even THINKING that it was OK for Sony to do this. If anyone actually bothered to READ the original Kotaku post, you'd see that they didn't JUST report a rumor and leave it at that. They went and pulled a bunch of quotes from the last 2 months and put two and two together to say, "There's definitely something to this".
This is called "Investigative Journalism".
It's actually what the Press is *supposed* to be doing. Not just repeating what some figure of power said for the masses.

Thank you, Fox News, for helping to create a sizable number of MORONS who think it's just DANDY to give the finger to the press!

Oh, and to the fellow wondering if this is a clever Sony PR move...it's not.
Like the Bush Administration, this is a case of Sony only having done the right thing after they were SHAMED into it.
When the head of the PR department had to PERSONALLY call the guys at Kotaku and basically APOLOGIZE, that's called "Damage Control".
Sony might be a seemingly incompetent bunch of morons over all, but they sure as HELL aren't that stupid when they see the way the internet exploded against them. If they didn't put this out quick, you can bet your ass this would have been in the national media by Monday at the absolute latest. We all know how much the national media LOVES a good David v. Goliath story.
The LAST thing Sony needs now is to have everyone TRULY pissed at them before the GDC.

As it stands, this ISN'T going to result in good will towards Sony. Anything Sony does now will be seen for what it is by an intelligent person – damage control.
The damage has been done and now Sony just has to take and roll with the punch as best they can.

I've said it before and I'll say it again:
I want Sony OUT OF BUSINESS AND SHUTTERED BY 2010.
For the good of the video game industry and consumers in general.

So someone finally says what Mushiking can't find the words to express? Good for Mushiking.

Probe, the two points of your argument are as far as it goes: Sony has the right to refrain from giving Kotaku access to their information, and while the fans of Kotaku can be assured of the integrity of the blog, companies might no longer trust Kotaku with information. But what is the point of receiving information if one is unable to spread it? Either through silence or through ignorance, Kotaku would not be able to tell the public the news. I doubt companies are going to keep them out of the loop for long or even at all. Meanwhile, they've received a lot of awe and respect from the community - and rightly so.

Ham-handed. Sony is a disaster this year. Every time they open their mouths they stuff both feet in even deeper. Don't they actually employ anyone with any PR experience? Whether or not the rumor was true, they handled it incredibly badly and embarrassed htemselves and damaged their relationship with a pretty influential fan site. Of course, also, by over-reacting they basically confirmed the rumor. Also stupid.

Would it have been so hard for Sony to do what Microsoft does and simply say "We don't comment on rumors"?

Anyone consider that this is a deliberate act on Sony's behalf to make themselves look good by backing down and taking the bad press from the fact that they have completely stolen ideas from Nintendo and Microsoft AGAIN??

I think conspiracies like that must happen all the time.

On that note, this has perked my interest in the PS3 upwards... I feel like the Mii channel is lacking some and if they do what they are saying they'll do then this could be a damn nice and enjoyable feature!!!

I still think it's deliberate of Sony though... taking the thoughts of people away from the actual Rumour that was spread and make them talking about silly stuff that really has nothing to do with the news article... slip it under the radar.

There have been many people weighing in on this. Here's the deal:

The press in this country has come under fire thanks to the Valerie Plame Case and such "news" orginizations such as fox news.

Kotaku is in the right here. If they labeled it as a "RUMOUR" which they did, sony couldn't get mad. It's not libel, it's not defamitory. Many Rumours get reported every day on Joystiq and Kotaku. The only reason sony could get mad at this is if there was a NDA from sony to Kotaku. I think sony has seen a LOT of negative press lately, and are starting to grasp at straws. Way to go kotaku.

""166. I love how because it's Sony, it's a freedom of speech issue, but if Apple do this kind of thing we make an excpetion because well, their keynotes or more entertaining and besides we have a grude against Sony Execs.""

NO, several people speculated about the iPhone before it was announced, same with iTV and the downloadble movies on iTunes. Apple did not Blackball these sites. Apple did not yell and scream and freak out like sony is. Sony is throwing a tantrum. Apple kept it's employees in the dark about the iPhone so leaks like this didn't happen, but Sony seems to have problems with stuff like this, so I bet the rumour is true.

Sony just wishes it could give out press releases and everyone would just gobble them up.

I can't believe that in all of these comments (I read most, not all) no one has said this:

There has been so much negative press about Sony lately and just when there was some positive things being released, although earlier than Sony wanted, Sony goes and makes more bad press for themselves. Even to the point of over-shadowing the good news. Like soooooo many commenters have said: SONY, STFU! "No Comment" will not get you ahead, but at least it won't get your foot stuck in your mouth again and again and again and again...

I’m still with sony on this whole deal. I mean people talking about journalism and stuff, come on, it wasn’t like sony was hidding anything from the people... they were going to announce the frikkin thing next week and of course they were pissed about this. Not only did it took away its thunder but it also gave the competition a chance to change their strategy for the GDC. There was no reason to get this information out before GDC, It would have been better if you did your journalism and dig all the information you could after the announcement.

I’m sure anybody would be pissed if they were told they were gonna have a surprise birthday party…

Another twisting of news by anti-Sony blog JOYSTIQ.

If you violate a press mandate, I don't care who the company is, you're going to get burned.

Seems ANYTHING Sony does anymore is deemed evil by you DS-toting, Wii-stroking asswipes. I swear, every week I check this rag of a blog there's half a dozen blatant Sony bash blogs on here, mostly with little to no foundation or real relevance to gaming whatsoever.

You guys are seriously a bunch of whining, pussified ubernerd Nintendo lovers. How embarrassing for the gaming community that the leading 'mouthpiece' of game news has its lips wrapped firmly around Nintendo's... Wii.

The real problem here is even though it may have been a rumor the site was posting, it still might have contained some factual information. If so, Sony would be perfectly justified in doing what they did. It really all comes down to the idea of secrets of the trade, Nintendo has the same general attitude over their controllers (of all things). I'm sure if somebody had managed to hit the nail on the head with a rumor about the wiimote, or the idea of achievements for the 360 before either were officially announced, you'd have seen something similar.
