Oh God! Details! I need details!

Part of me is extremely excited about this, since THQ has done such a good job with the Dawn of War titles, but I can't help but wonder how this will work as an MMORPG and still stay true to the source material.

Can I play, for instance, a Terminator? A Dreadnought? How would this be balanced against a standard everyday Ork without the source material getting creamed?

Still, I'll be watching this one closely...

Innocence proves nothing!

Honestly, I would rather have a 40k, tactical squad based game using the Unreal 3 engine where I get to control the Sisters of Battle, with a control scheme kinda like Bothers in Arms. Or at least they should have Tyranids in there somewhere.

Is that too much to ask?

MMOs...bah!

You know for those complaing about the plethora of MMOS that have elves and other fantasy races guess what Warhammer 40k has elves as well. They are the Eldar. The evil elves are the Dark Eldar.

Goblins could be considered the gretchins. Halfings or Hobbits are the Ratlings.

Ogres are the Ogryns.

You have the undead in the form of the Necron.

Demons are the Chaos Legions.

Dwarves were the Squats. But they got killed off and a new race of Dwarves emerged who are now part of the Tau alliance of races.

Sorry, TheKingInYellow...

But you know all of us thought about that as soon as we saw the chainsaw on the Lancer bisect a Locust in Gears of War. Can you imagine a unit armed with eviscorators...!!!

As a side note, I just recently noticed there is a new card expansion pack in the works for the Arkham Horror board game that involves The King In Yellow.

Sounds fun.

Here's my idea: your avatar is actually a squad commander, and instead of fighting a bunch of individuals, you fight other squads. As you level up, you get access to better types of squads to command, along with allowing them access to squad upgrades, like more men or better equipment. There'd also be a personal growth aspect to this, since your commander would get wargear and better individual stats. Maybe you could even command multiple squads at higher levels.

I don't think that's been done before, and it would kick so much ass.

Nice to see some fellow 40k players.

I am really outgrowing the game though and I am tired of the pricing and increases.

Right now I do more Warmachine, At-43 and Classic Battletech (3025)

Stupid stupid stupid. The 40k universe is about battles that can span across AN ENTIRE PLANET SIMULTANEOUSLY. Life is cheap, dirt cheap, I mean my god, the warp beacon is powered by psychic humans being drained of their life force, they don't last long so they just keep jamming in more humans. Very, very few people in the entire universe are truly noteworthy and the whole thing just can't work in the canon as in reality, you'd be dead in the first 5 seconds of logging in.

Agree with poster #17 (Dave). Best WH40K painting ever. Some people just don't the 3 B's of the WH40K theme. Biggest. Baddest. Brutal-est (?).

Savok,

I was just concerned about game balance, but yeah the whole canon makes an MMORPG just about impossible to do accurately.

I just know that I won't be happy with the game somehow. I mean, are they going to let you play your choice of Eldar Aspect Warriors or just Guardians? Just SMs? How many chapters will they include? Or will it be just Ultramines or Cheesy Woofs (oops, I mean Space Wolves).

How about playing as Tyranids or IG? How can you balance characters in an army that relies on sheer numbers of disposable troops?

It's going to be a difficult balancing act for THQ.

Relic did a great job on the RTS side. I enjoyed it a lot. However taking it to MMORPG level will not serve the fans well especially when there is a similar universe game already available. I agree with the comment that there should be a FPS instead of a MMORPG.

As if there weren't a thousand of MMOs already. Is there really room for TWO with the same namesake? Even if they are set in different time periods.

This could work if you came in as a commander of a squad. Squad sizes would be different between each faction to compensate for balance. One player gets twice as many weaker characters as another.

Uh guys, they never said anything about an MMORPG.

This will more than likely be a MMORTS or possibly even a turn based replica of the board game based across many worlds to battle on against AI or other people.

GW probably wouldn't allow them to try and make an RPG anyways, it would piss off the fanbase that is all about STRATEGY.

Can't wait for this. I love the 40k fluff, though to be honest I gave up playing TT YEARS ago (shortly after the SM/DE boxed set). Played Nids, Dark Angels, and Chaos (Khorne). In spite of my doubts that they can make the game feel exactly as the 40k universe should, I'm still excited for this. I'm not so ridiculous a fanboy that I would slam a game (in spite of how well it does or doesn't play) just because they didn't get the "feel" perfect.

awesome... though i do agree that they need to do something a little different (MMORPGS have gotten so repetetive.. just the same game over and over with different skins).

A squad based tactical game would rock.. controlling 5 man tactical squads would add a lot of depth to the MMO grind.. you could recruit suad members, equip them differently, give them different personalities, different equipment loadouts, etc..

Then combat would consist more of issuing realtime orders than of actually fighting yourself.

Problem is, i can't decide what i want to control most.. a squad of sisters of battle, inquisitors, grey knight terminators, space wolf assault marines with jumppacks, imperial guard rough-riders or eldar harlequins.. argh!

When I played Dawn of War, the first thought that came to mind was, "This would be an awesome RTSFPS a la Savage." But, naw, they just had to squash the path of least resistance and go with the path of most profit.

On the bright side, I no longer feel a pressing need for a Starcraft MMO. And there better freakin' Tyranids.

I'm really hoping they'll just steal Planetside's game base, as that was one hell of a lot of fun until the BFR's *shudder*. Also in Planetside they already have stuff like hover tanks, jet packs and stealth suits. A graphical revamp is in order, but as long as THQ can jump over the hurdle that is the lore/theoretical reality (as in that if a marine dies it's kind of a tragedy, and there are normally very few actually fighting at a time and everyone's probably going to play as them etc.) then it should suit 40k's style. An RPG is doomed to fail from WoW's overbearing presence, if they screw this up i will personally take a band of similar minded people and murder all responsible. Anyway, best of luck to them, the emperor protects!
