Alice now Universal Binary on Mac
American McGee's Alice has been updated into a Universal Binary, and the tens of Mac gamers who both use Intel Macs and enjoyed this title -- or at least its gnarled art direction -- can now run the game natively. (Okay, we jest; there must be at least hundreds of us, including this writer and other Joystiq contributors.)We salute Aspyr for offering a free update to this older title. This sort of support makes us want to keep playing Mac titles, even though the platform's gaming future is uncertain at best. Now excuse us while we dig up old copies of Alice and recite incantations for a Deus Ex update.

Wow - 6 years later.
REUYL @ Mar 2nd 2007 6:44PM
Phew, good thing they got this out before the game got old.

Think different.
Hey, the game's new to Mac users. *shrug* I, personally, have already beaten this game on all available difficulty modes, and that was several years ago. I must say that this game is a very rewarding gaming experience, though.
The extent to which you have to change your combat tactics on the higher difficulties is just unreal. God, I never knew how effective the Vorpal Blade could be until I played this on Nightmare.
This game is awesome. The graphical style is just incredible, and the pre-rendered movies are simply amazing. One of the most awesome-looking games for its time. Enjoy it, Mac users. Just be sure to not play it with your God-awful Apple mice. *shudders*

My apologies. I misread that. Wow, this was already available on Macs? Still, keep this game away from those horrible Apple mice.

I think gaming on the Mac is looking better than it's ever been before. With the switch to Intel, it should be MUCH easier to port games between Mac and Windows.

I am a Mac user but I think the switch to Intel is pretty much going to be the death of large commercial games on the Mac. Why bother waiting for the lower quality Mac version when you can boot into Windows and play it the day it is released and with a significant performance boost. As more and more Mac users decide to do this fewer and fewer publishers will bother porting titles to the platform. I hate Windows with a passion but I think that dual booting for games is pretty awesome. Just wish I had an Intel Mac so I could.

@Twist
Wow, I never really thought of it that way.

@#1: Well, keep in mind that the Intel Mac platform has only been around for a year.

I personally see many more games being released on Macs (although Intel Only). Just look at Cider ( http://www.transgaming.com/index.php?module=ContentExpress&file=index&func=display&ceid=24 They are already using it for Heros 5 for Mac. ( http://www.freeverse.com/heroes5/ ) I know the game has been out for a while, but it was a quick port once they started it, and I expect to see many more.

Awesome! My main desktop is now an Intel Mac, and I've been wanting to play this game again ^_^
uros @ Mar 3rd 2007 5:25PM
wow.. one of the most unexpected UB updates that I've seen. Well, it's still good news for the Mac!
Hugh Jass @ Mar 23rd 2007 10:37AM
That's kinda cool -- there's no way to run the PC version with the Intel binaries, is there? Like running Doom WAD files with a different executable?
