Today's hottest video: New Battlefield teaser

A new EA/DICE Battlefield game is in production for release this year, and a GameTrailers video of the title scores our pick for the day. The self-referential machinima of Battlefield: Bad Company features two soldiers verbally sparing with an announcer, dodging enemy fire while trying to stop the "In a world..."-style announcements. But behind this gimmick, the video shows a few gameplay elements, like how buildings crumble when shot.
See the video after the break.

A great way of making a trailer. Game looks really good too, but seems alot like Army of Two.
Mike @ Mar 3rd 2007 12:50AM
Very clever!
Looks interesting.
Phil @ Mar 3rd 2007 1:01AM
Man this sucks, it's like a marketing team took a great looking game and decided the flavor of next-gen would be "action, but with humour!". They did the same for Army of Two and I don't like it. We're not in 1994 here. It ruins the seriousness the two games could have. I wouldn't watch a movie like this because I would find the characters too annoying; same thing in a game. I want them to shut up or be "cool", not dumbasses.
They try to give personality to their characters but all they can do to make them stand out is make living caricatures out of them.
Why can't we have characters like Tyler Durden, John McClane, Bill from Kill Bill, Lee Van Cleef or Eli Wallach. Why must characters in videogames be so fucking terrible?
SYN @ Mar 3rd 2007 1:22AM
@#3: because we all know we don't have enough serious war games out there.
you know what else they need to do to these games? make them all set in ww2. putting them in any other war kills the mood.
Uncle Ruckus @ Mar 3rd 2007 1:37AM
@3. Look the game is just a humorous take on the battlefield series. Excluding BF:Vietnam, all the BF games have been pretty serious.
Phil @ Mar 3rd 2007 1:38AM
Just because there are a bunch of serious war games already doesn't mean that making two annoying and absolutely unfunny characters, who are supposed to be funny, is a good idea.
Azerael @ Mar 3rd 2007 1:47AM
@3 Action and humor aren't mutually exclusive, y'know.
You can have your bland, run-of-mill cool guy who you probably don't give two shits about (Tom Clancy games, anyone?), or you can inject a little, dare I say, character into them.
I don't think real soldiers are limited to a single facial expression, so why should games be any different?
smallshinyant @ Mar 3rd 2007 2:34AM
dont care. i like it. and if the game turns out to be rubbish, i want to see the film.. i like the idea of having a laugh while playing a shooter. lets just hope there is enough variety in the game dialogue to not get to annoying.
ilmmad @ Mar 3rd 2007 2:48AM
The idea is it's darker humor. THis isn't exactly what you'll play in Bad Company.
Aside, the game looks incredible. Something like 90% of the world is destructable, using a new engine. Want to get into the building?
Blow a hole in the wall and hop on through.
The idea is also to put more stress on the single-player, which kinda sucked on the other BF games. And judging from the picture at the top, it will be more than just two characters in B Company.

Looks great, but I'm sure I'm in the minority here being tired of war game after war game being released.
The other night I saw an Army commercial that basically started out with two guys playing a video game and I almost threw up in my mouth.
NintendoFanbot @ Mar 3rd 2007 3:24AM
I'm surprised none of them gets crushed by a 20-pound piece of brick. :P
steve17 @ Mar 3rd 2007 4:18AM
@3 the jokes just led up to a clever way to say they have now made a fully destructable environment.

"Filed under: Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360, Action, Video"
Not PC?
windsof @ Mar 3rd 2007 7:40AM
This game is going to be on PS3 or Xbox 360. i don't PC gamers are missing out on much, I can't see a single player BF game being good, the multiplayer is what makes BF games.
saboola @ Mar 3rd 2007 8:26AM
You have your selection of "serious" war games coming out the wazoo. Why blast the developers for trying something different? I think its kinda cool.
Peter Johnston @ Mar 3rd 2007 10:00AM
Just go ahead and drive the series further into the ground Dice.
DuckRacer1 @ Mar 3rd 2007 10:17AM
@ #13:
Bad Company is console exclusive.
fat albert @ Mar 3rd 2007 10:43AM
Wow-super! Should be a winner on next-next gen. Sign me up!
TiaMaster @ Mar 3rd 2007 11:14AM
I was of the understanding that fuklly destructible environments was almost impossible using the consoles we have now.
Here's hoping they pull it off.
Fierce360 @ Mar 3rd 2007 1:07PM
fully distructible environments were capable on the ps2. ever play red faction?
Arturo @ Mar 3rd 2007 2:21PM
@20:
fully destructible environemnts were capable on the ps1. ever play red faction? lol
Khris Killer @ Mar 3rd 2007 4:03PM
If you dont like the look or style of this game...dont buy it. the end.
Richard @ Mar 3rd 2007 4:22PM
Wow, that 360 logo at the end killed it for me. Don't get me wrong, I love my 360 and will typically buy games for it instead of PC, but not Battlefield. And I could care less about this single player focus they seem to be going for. I just want a next gen Battlefield that'll have new features like destructible environments, and whatever else they might have planned, but optimized for huge online multiplayer goodness.
Ironhide @ Mar 3rd 2007 6:18PM
Red Faction's destructable environments were iffy at best. Only select pieces could be destroyed and even then it was a 50% or 100% destroyed replacement model.
I think the main thing here which a lot of repsonses seem to be missing is that this is EA attemtping to be more creative with a game fanchise. Not only that but these are real time engine graphics. These are damn fine looking graphcis and EA is responsible for this. No rehashes here.
Phillip @ Mar 3rd 2007 6:46PM
That really don't look like machinima to me. That looks pre-rendered.
Phillip @ Mar 3rd 2007 6:48PM
@14
There's going to be multiplayer.

s256 @ Mar 3rd 2007 10:20PM
I doubt those are actual final in-game characters.
Ironhide @ Mar 4th 2007 5:15AM
I do this stuff for a living. If you know what to look for, you'll see tell tale signs these are realtime graphics.
Kris @ Mar 4th 2007 2:23PM
I think humour is underrated in war games. Many good war films usually have a good line in humour e.e. Kelly's Heroes, Dirty Dozen. Humour was bit generic/predictable here tho. Actually preferred the trailer for Army of Two.
Trizero @ Mar 4th 2007 11:38PM
Uhh, yeah, Ironhide is right. Although I don't think you need to be in the job to see it, you can definately tell at points that it's not pre=rendered. It's realtime graphics. Most obvious sign? In the beginning, when they're panning down. Look on the second floor. You can see it load up and then the texture is put down on it.
Also, when the inside of the house goes from black to a real indoor environment. Fact is, it's obviously in-engine footage.
