@BPM, they say that A.I. is getting better so fast that it's actually doubling every 5 years. At this rate we'll all be killed in a robot revolution the second they become sentient. By that time, a robot would be able to communicate with us on the same level we are able to communicate with ants. If we can't beat them, we must join them. We must become cyborgs. I'd guesstimate we've got about 30 years to do so.

Youquin,

Are you from France? I don't mean anything hateful or spiteful by that. I am just curious. From your two posts, France and Italy seem the most likely.

XBOX 360 european ad, fall in the same category as this latest PS3 ad. These are disruptive advertisements- they are selling the idea of the system, and they work.

That's pretty funny, samfish. And BMP, the AI is making fast leaps -- my buddy in the AI doctorate program at OSU has a program beating Warcraft 2 every 3-5 seconds, and it went through many losses before it because this proficient. It's learning, and for some odd facetious reason, he's calling his program "Skynet". Irony is a terrible fate.

As for the commercial, in the marketing business, it's all about raising above the "noise", meaning, the constant drumming of marketing. You have to do something innovative to turn heads. This commercial does that, but I think it fails on a "you should buy" level.

Jake, let Mr. Youquin be. He's already dug a nice hole for himself. We'll me mindful of him in the future.

Would anyone from Europe or anywhere outside america, stfu about america. My god, its like it completley acceptable to stereotype a whole nation. Lets say for instance a black man posted that he didnt like the commercial, then all these white people came along and said you black people are stupid, we white people like wierd commercials. You can bet there would be a big uproar, so all im saying is, say what you are gonna say, just cut off the diss to americans, ok?

it is very David Lynch, who is off the wall and creative enough to have been a European director rather than a sausage factory Hollywood hack. I know it is left of centre for the American market, fact is it is for a European audience with different sensibilities.

It is about making people talk, creating a buzz so it looks to have done its job. I am sure there will be a follow up ad which links all this to the PS3.

yes. i dont know what came over me. its just im a typical american. the kind that doesnt look down our noses at the world. doesnt support our troops dying in senseless wars. doesnt support political lies and bullshit to get us into those senseless wars. and i try to be understanding.

what set me off was the general "YOU AMERICANS" tone. i may not love everything but i do love and support the american way. and i will not say anything hurtful regaurding what country one is from. sorry to everyone who had to see that. im ashamed now.

we are all gamers here. lets treat each other like fellow gamers in a community all our own. and not go into where we live or what we believe. we are here on this site together as gamers. lets not fight because of political boundries.

Did you just call David Lynch a Hollywood hack? He just filmed his newest movie entirely on digital and distributed it himself. He seriously came to a local theater here in Pasadena, CA with the film reels and posters (that he made himself). It's probably the most independently made movie ever.

@70 I like Americans and I like America, I am saying that the European market is different and more open minded...generalisation but a fair one. I don't think this ad would go down well in mainstream America. It is a conservative nation on the whole is it not?

I am saying Hollywood churns out a whole lot of crap, sequel after sequel...generalisation (sometimes there is great innovation) but a fair one.

@71 I am saying Lynch isn't a Hollywood hack...he can also be a pretentious wanker but usually his films are interesting which is a change from the usual.

@Broadside, oh word. I misunderstood your post.

Well some of my favorite directors are Lynch, Fellini, and Bunuel, and I think this commercial is just an MTV/Tarantino watered-down version of surrealism. It doesn't really do anything but says "Look at this wacky chain of events that led to this money exploding. Please give us your money for our product."

I'll second the Lynch as "Hollywood Hack" idea. His crap is "cool" when you're 16 or so and weird for weird's sake is off tha chain (as those hooky kids say), but I'll be damned if I can be bothered to care about any of his self-indulgent crap that he's been bestowing upon the film viewing populace ever since Fire Walk With Me came out. I couldn't care less how he makes and distributes his movies; he sucks.

Hey konajinx, I think you mean Bunuel, not Dali. Dali's entire movie career consists of co-writing 2 scripts with Bunuel, and then not even showing up when Bunuel made the movies entirely by himself.

Then Bunuel went on to have a long successful career that brought surrealism from the fringes of the art world to mainstream Hollywood, paving the way for directors like David Lynch and Terry Gilliam.

Also, in defense of Lynch, you don't necessarily need plot to make something stimulating in other ways. I mean, where's the plot in Tetris?

I like how everyone here thinks they're a marketing expert and they know what works and what dosen't. "It dosen't work" or "It won't sell PS3's," yet everyone is talking about it. The underline message of "I hate how its so expensive," is that people want one, otherwise they wouldn't even complain and just look the other way.

I dont get the whole commercial at all.

Somebody needs to cock-punch these multi-million dollar corporation and tell them that ambiguous ads that have nothing to do with what the product does are worthless. I know they are trying to look cool with their polished commercials but they don't work. Take a cue from Apple and Nintendo on how to effectively do a commercial.

Basicly since I not heared good reports about eather system... I'll probably stick to my computer and older systems till a major price drop of some kind for the 360...

Seems that if you already like the PS3 you think this is an 'OK' commercial. If you hate Sony you'll likely come on here and say "it was stupid" and that "there's nothing to 'get' or understand."

If you're looking for gameplay footage, understand that this is in the early pre-release phase of the PS3 and you ain't gettin gameplay footage. They're trying to build a brand, not show you 'Resistance.' That's the what the 'Resistance' commercial will be for.

Regarding the Euro - American debate here, I constantly see things being sooooo much cheaper in America, I get truly pissed. The "higher" living standard is payed by 50% of your income... damn taxes.

Americans like myself do like weird commercials but they still have to get the message across about what they are advertising.

A good example of popular but weird American commercials include the ones for Target like these:

wow. this tops the creepy baby doll commercial. sony must be getting desperate.
as for commercial analysis, I think each console has something that makes it stand out. x360 has the best games, ps3 has the best power and graphics, and the wii has the most innovation and creativity. I like all the consoles but regardless, the approach sony is taking to their marketing campaign is childish. if you were really smart, you'd remember that the audience the ps3 is aimed at (rich kids, hardcore gamer sony fanboys{who will probably buy the console anyway}) don't take 5 minutes to overanalyze a tv commercial, they just want to see the product.
