Too bad there was a mouse for the Commodore 64... even a boot disc that made like a cool C64 version of Windows. Also too bad I was in Grade 5 when I saw it.

Will it still tell me to "Press Play on Tape" all the time even though I don't have a tape drive?

Personally, I am hoping for this to come with the old commodore key layout too... I miss the feel of
LOAD @#@,8,1
LIST
RUN
it just doesn't have the flair typing "*" on the modern keys... Yet another cool, if eccentric use for the Optimus 103
I must go
it is a dark room
i am likely to be eaten by a grue

Good timing, since "64" in the title has some significance again (64k, 64-bit).

Misleading: the original Commodore has long been defunct, their brand traded between different companies. Saying these guy are Commodore without noting that makes as much sense as referring to rebranded Infogrammes as Atari.

John H.: "Misleading: the original Commodore has long been defunct, their brand traded between different companies."

Thank God. There were few worse companies out there than Commodore when it came to sheer incompetence. I hear the new Commodore products are actually quite good.

More newsworthy is that new C64 joystick that plugged into your TV. It has a number of solder points on the motherboard that allows you to add a PS/2 keyboard and use it just like a real C64.

The Commodore brand lost all value a long, long, long, long time ago. Just about when CBM managed to drive a business featuring one of the finest home computers of its day straight into the ground.

@ Drxym

true that. I remember when the A-4000 was making the rounds and Commodore refused to marketing it properly. Reading interviews and accounts from people in the company (engineers, coders etc) the engineers were a passionate group that loved the hardware. The execs didn't seem to care to much. We all know the result. Personally, a piece of me died a little the day the Amiga brand went belly up. D-PAint, Brillance, Scala, Imagine....Lamatron, Turrican, Gods, Shadow of the Beast...THOSE were good times....

@Striderhayasa, too true. I had owned numerous Amigas and had actually saved up to order an A4000. I rang up a dealer to place my order and I was told CBM had hiked the price by £100. So I bought a PC instead and the rest is history. With hindsight the best decision I ever made. The A4000 was a great machine, but that's not much use if the company goes out of business soon after.

Commodore Amiga.

I find it funny when a modern gaming blog tries to cover "old" products and 99% get it totally wrong. Nice try though.
AmigaONE.

Commodore was big with microcomputers. I mean an Amiga could produce graphics capable of Mac or run office apps like a PC (back when there was clear advantages to both systems). Amiga could do it all for a fraction of the price, so along comes the AmigaONE and ****s it all up.

The C64 and A500 were more like game consoles than PCs... relatively cheap, clearly defined hardware generations, and you just turned them on and they worked. I even "modded" my Amiga to support PAL like people mod consoles today to make them region-free.

And game consoles are becoming more like those old computers, now that consoles are supporting media and productivity software. I can connect to a webpage quicker and with less understanding of the Operating System on a Wii than on a Windows PC. Consoles are much more "consumer friendly" than PCs, and in another generation, I think game consoles could become the new "home computers" if Sony and/or Nintendo decide to go that route.

A few months ago I was looking to unload my collection of old Commodore stuff. To my surprise I was able to find several ACTIVE Commodore groups still around! *sniff* Not much love for my old ST, though. Can you imagine a group of people who still use 15 year old PCs as their "work" computers? Hah! The Amiga 4000 may well be the *best computer ever* and this is coming from a Mac guy from the '030 days!

That said, the newest iteration of "Commodore branded" products sully what little is left of the once glorious legacy. But this is a real step in the right direction!

I'm building my next PC--or I thought I was until this. If they make a system with a retro cool chassis then I will definitely consider it.

Ah, the memories!

"21. The C64 and A500 were more like game consoles than PCs..."

....wuh ... My C64 was running my outside Christams lights, fully interfacing them to 110vac power. I also removed all tape routines from ROM and used the empty space for custom commands and reburned it all into new MCM68764's. I also used it as a piece of electronic test equipment.

.... yeah, a game console - but one with a bidirectional data port .... sheeesh ...
