Ubisoft confirms TMNT XBLA (Cowabunga!)
Konami's classic coin-op Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is officially headed to Xbox Live Arcade later this month, courtesy of Ubisoft. With the TMNT movie out on Friday, March 23, we're flagging the preceding Wednesday (March 21) as a likely release date. The Digital Eclipse rendition will feature necessary 2- to 4-player co-op over Xbox Live (let's hope lessons were learned from Contra) -- no word on an "enhanced" mode. Nostalgia seekers will be asked to shell out a 400-point entry fee ($5). What, no limited-time promotion? We're just sayin' ... maybe give us a lil' something for free; we check out the movie; possibly rent the other game ... whad'ya say, Ubi?Clarification: TMNT will also offer offline multiplayer and can obviously be played alone. We just meant "necessary" online co-op, as in, a 'must-have' feature. And yeah 400 points is also a no-brainer for us -- but it don't hurt to ask for a freebie...

I'll be picking this one up for sure.

IGN is blocked at work. Could someone confirm 2-4 player offline co-op?
refinedsugar @ Mar 6th 2007 10:30AM
Good 'ol fashioned nostalgia right there!
Unit @ Mar 6th 2007 10:30AM
ahh a nice classic to help fill that empty void of xbla. Someone remind me again why it takes so long for games like this to get on xbla?
Vidikron @ Mar 6th 2007 10:30AM
Well... with this and Worms, that's two quality games this month, but I still REALLY want to know when SotN is going to be released. I want to play that game badly.
christopher @ Mar 6th 2007 11:24AM
anyone know if the original tmnt song will be in this one? they stripped it from the version that konami added as a bonus.
bootsielon @ Mar 6th 2007 10:33AM
No single player?
Anyway, are XBLA games not getting price-drops some time? Because I refuse to buy 5 dollar games that suck (not talking about this one). Perhaps a dollar or two would do.
Jonah Falcon @ Mar 6th 2007 10:33AM
The limited time promotion is the TMNT demo for the new next-gen version.
Liqwid @ Mar 6th 2007 10:34AM
XBFanboy just stated that it's going to support 4 player co-op. http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2007/03/06/tmnt-officially-coming-to-arcade/

What the hell type of logic are you exhibiting? Why would you pay for a game you thought was bad, period?

So does this mean we won't be seeing this game on the Wii? Has a game ever appeared on multiple consoles digital online stores before? I'm not counting Gametap, just Playstation Store, XBLA, or the VC.
wait in the car @ Mar 6th 2007 10:54AM
If this game has unlimited credits (like I'm assuming it will), the fun factor is going to die in about 10 minutes. One of the main factors that made this game so much fun was scrambling for another quarter before the "continue?" time ran out or someone else jumped into your spot. I can't see it lasting for more than one play through.
Same thing goes for the Simpsons Arcade or any other beat-em-up.
dukrous @ Mar 6th 2007 11:43AM
400 points for one the best coin-op games and Joystiq complains it isn't free? $5 is more than worth it for that game. Hell, I'd have been happy with 800 points.
ZenGaijin @ Mar 6th 2007 11:09AM
Well its this and Castlevania.
Hopefully they will both be 800 points.
LaughingTarget @ Mar 6th 2007 11:13AM

Which is why XBLA should allow all games to be downloaded in full-form for free but charge the equivelant of a quarter for each credit. It would then be a real arcade.
Tetranitrocubane @ Mar 6th 2007 11:14AM
@ZenGaijin
Sorry to dissapoint you. This game will not be 800 points.
It will be 400.
Matt Paprocki @ Mar 6th 2007 11:15AM
#11: Why would this be on the Wii? It never appeared in true arcade form on any of the consoles that the VC supports. The Wii may get the rather awful NES port, but not this.
Thad @ Mar 6th 2007 11:16AM
Hm -- wonder if the original music will be intact. There was some kind of rights issue that prevented them from using it in the version that was unlockable in one of the (lousy) last-gen TMNT games.
Allister Howe @ Mar 6th 2007 11:21AM
I'll get it if:
A) It has offline multiplayer
B) It has some sort of "quarter limiting" thing going on, like you only get X-number of quarters on HARD mode or something (This can be done with an achievement too... Say "Beat the game using only 8 quarters")
I love the TMNT arcade game, even the NES port which I played for hours on end with friends. Hopefully it'll be a good port of the Arcade one.
wait in the car @ Mar 6th 2007 11:25AM
@ LaughingTarget
Now THAT would work very nicely, as far as keeping the spirit of the games alive. Too bad it would cost players a lot in the long run. Unfortunately, I can see a lot of outraged gamers if they implemented such a system.
Adam @ Mar 6th 2007 11:26AM
Will this work better than Contra?
samfish @ Mar 6th 2007 11:36AM
This is awesome news, but it's true that a lot of this game's appeal comes from being under the gun and paying for it.
It's still enjoyable over all with unlimited continues, but loses a lot of it's soul.
I still like the idea of paying a one time fee of about $20.00 or so and using it in .$25 cent increments to play arcade games on XBLA. At the end of the month, they would reload your $20.00.
Abhinav @ Mar 6th 2007 2:07PM
Well WOOOOO HOOOOOO! This is the game that actually made me feel like a gamer when i played it on the NES and might just be my favorite game of all time. Man oh man XBL is getting so much better with SOTN, Guitar hero download ables and now this! Whoo hoo indeed!
LaughingTarget @ Mar 6th 2007 11:38AM

Depends on the situation. I know I'd benefit from it because I'd only spend around $2, not $5, on a title. 4-8 "quarters" and I've had my fill and probably won't look back again.
Players may also enjoy it as it builds an addiction. Fake poker and slots aren't close to as enjoyable as the ones in Vegas, and you end up losing in Vegas more than the cost of a casino game.
ZenGaijin @ Mar 6th 2007 11:41AM
@Tetranitrocubane
OH how dare they *Complaint* this is so not what XBLA is about undercharging for classic I can't get anywhere else. Those bastards, those wicked bastards.
I have enough points to buy it now.....aweso....RADICAL!!
Sloar @ Mar 6th 2007 11:55AM
I don't think that your use of the word "necessary" is accurate. IGN just states that all the levels will be playable in 2-4 multiplayer over xboxlive. You will be able to play single player or up to 4-player over live. You guys had me all riled up there for a moment. Now all I need is the X-men arcade game and I couldn't be happier.
Bring on X-men!
Jonah Falcon @ Mar 6th 2007 11:59AM
1. It has offline multiplayer
2. It has online multiplayer
3. It has a leaderboard
4. It has Achievements
5. It costs 400 points
No brainer.
NintendoFanbot @ Mar 6th 2007 12:11PM
Now I'll probably need to get a 360. ;_;
But I HATE that background. Isn't there a full-screen mode?

Woohoo! I'll be buying this, if only to drag my cousins down memory lane with me.
baby sea tuna @ Mar 6th 2007 2:05PM
@29
You may be able to stretch the screen like you could with Time Pilot, but since this game is native 4:3, the background is on there to fill the rest of the 16:9 space, without messing up the orignal aspect ratio. While I do agree that that background is kinda shitty, I guess it beats having your characters all distorted.
What I really wish is that they'd have the original frame artwork up there to give the full arcade illusion. Small complaint though...
ManekiNeko @ Mar 6th 2007 2:55PM
Yeah, for 400 points, this is a no-brainer. I've been waiting for a perfect translation of TMNT: The Arcade Game for decades, and now that it's finally here, nothing's going to stop me from getting it. I was really worried that this was going to debut for twice the price, but 400 points is more than reasonable considering what you're getting out of the deal.
savvydoc @ Mar 6th 2007 3:06PM
I'm with #25 dukrous on this one. 5 bucks for this classic game is a done deal.
And shut up with your dumb quarter simulation schemes. I've got one for you. Before you start playing, promise yourself not to use press continue more than 'X' number of times. kthxbai
ackmondual @ Mar 6th 2007 3:14PM
If ya don't want unlimited creds, then don't use 'em. I think u'll be forced to use a limited # of lives anyways, for the sake of leaderboard bragging rights and achievement points. Those who just wanna have fun are free to use all the credits they want.
And for those who wanna pay a quarter for each credit, I'm sure M$ will be happy to take your $0.25 ;)

YES! This is the type of arcade games we want! I'm glad to see they're getting away from the early early days of the arcade (no, we don't need to play Pole Position again, really...) and into the stuff that's more fun like this and Double Dragon. WOO HOO!!!!!!!!!!!
