Fils-Aime? Do I have a Reginald Fils-Aime?
Apparently Reggie was in the audience at Phil Harrison's Sony keynote this morning, because waiting for him outside was this dark, important-looking vehicle and a driver who wasn't so pleased to have his picture taken. That guy's hardcore.My question is, does that driver know what Reggie looks like? Could I be Fils-Aime? And where would I get to go? The Joystiq team considering hijacking the car for a tour around San Francisco ... Reggie wouldn't mind, right?

Reg probably snuck out from the back door after the Harrison keynote out of shame. Sony basically added about 59 additional layers of coolness and complexity to the Mii/Animal crossing concept and now makes Nintendo look so... infantile.
Nintendo better get their act together with the online and possibly allowing third parties to tool with the Miis; otherwise, Sony has a Mii-crusher on their hands.
What is wrong with Nintendo, their online plans and general paranoia? It seems they are so overzealously protective they are treating everyone like potential pedophiles/rapists/sodomists, while Sony is encouraging everyone to go online without a care in the world as to whether avatars want to hook up in the real or virtual world or not to do whatever ungodly things they want to.

How is it "cool"? Because it's Second Life on your PS3? Because it brings in-game advertising to your home console?
I'll still take Miis and Animal Crossing over almost anything Sony could offer me. Less is more, you see; simplicity can be a good thing. You'd think Sony would have learned that after the PSP. ;)

Fine: Animal Crossing and Miis are cooler than a Sims/2nd Life offspring (although I still think that's debatable - I think the PS3 concept will really take off, and I am entitled to my opinion as well as you are entitled to yours, right? :) )
Actually, I think it's Miis/Animal crossing on steroids, personally.
Simplicity is good. So is complexity. You can make the complex simple with the PS3 implementation if you wanted - just create your avatar accordingly. With Miis, you are stuck with egg-shaped people, so in this case I can see more potential with PS3. While we're on complexity vs simplicity: if it weren't for complexity, we'd still be playing Pac-Man.
But seriously, what's up with online? Pokemon alone does not mean online in my book. And a rapist/child molester I am not.
And before you brand me a Sony fanboy, I hate Sony's corporate philosophy, and fully embrace Nintendo's philosophy (http://wii.nintendo.com/iwataasks.jsp) so if anything I am a Nintendo fanboy. Sometimes, though, you just have to admit (copying ideas or not) that Sony does have a potential winner here.

LOL... you have got to be joking? How are game specific friend codes simple? Keep telling yourself that Nintendo has a clue about what people want to do online... they're completely lost, and they got completely owned today.

It all comes down to cost. Plus who knows if those ads will become spam and spyware. And there are all those micro-transactions like clothes and furniture. I repeat what others have said that this is similar to Sims and Second Life. And the first PS3 they tried to demo on froze up. How reliable is it? This isn't selling me on $600 machine.

Incorporating other people's ideas into your project without paying dues and giving credit to it's creator is nothing Sony fan's should boast about because that pathetic unoriginallity essentially reflects back upon Sony gamers within itself.

I think the freezing was due to the project being in the beta testing phase? I remember when Windows 95 (?) was being demoed for the first time by none other than Bill Gates, and the sucker froze on him. And here we all are, with a 95:100 likeliness to be typing our posts on some flavor of Windows or another.
Spyware and spam could be issues, however, and given Sony executives' track record, they may have overlooked this, but being in beta, they still have a few months to work out the kinks, not to mention they will be able to patch this thing as unforeseen issues rear their ugly heads.

Personally, I think PSHome sounds more like a case of "jack of all trades, master of none". It strikes me as not being hardcore enough for the hardcores and to complex for the casuals.
I certainly hope that they don't force you to use the service to play games online and stuff.
Anyway, if I were oyou guys, I'd have walked up to the guy with the sign and said, "Why yes– I'm...uh...'feels...amee'. Take me to...where ever it is I'm going!"
And then you get the skinny on Nintendo's secret plans to not roll out Wii Online until 2008.

I'd rather pay My Sims or Animal Crossing than I would Sony's Second Life rip-off. A neutered Second Life at that.

It's interesting to read the spin that microsoft and nintendo fanboys add to PSHome. First they said "NO ONLINE, ONLINE IS CRAP ON PS3 LOLOLOL111!!" and now "OH NOES BEING BETTER IS WORSE, COMPLEXITY BAD!!11111".
Anyway, you're like the ones that said Sony making double analogue sticks, double rumble, double triggers are crap because they copied the competition. Pathetic.
This is business for morons, you could learn a little bit from it. This is how Sony won the "console wars" with PS1 and PS2; copying everything, improving upon what they could and offering a little more. In fact, this is how Microsoft has been gaining territory everywhere they set their (ugly) foot on. And this is how Nintendo entered the market in the eighties.
The games are there, or will be there soon enough, and I'm talking about variety, not mini-games and shooters. The only thing that stops everyone now or in a few months from buying a PS3 is the price, but that's temporary too.

You DO NOT need to buy clothes. There are lots of things to do on PSHome, I recommend you to watch the demo. It's not a substitute for Mii or achievements, it's an improvement, and then a lot more. It's not simply second life, and you're not paying 600 for second life, you're paying 600 for the whole package.
I can't wait til Microsoft and Nintendo make something better so you act like hypocrites and say "yay!! Ours is better now!". That's bound to happen because that's how business works. Deal with it.

Have a read through the entire article (at least the first two pages) and you can see that Nintendo "saw the need, filled the need". Quite a fascinating read, really. I rarely get involved in flame wars between fanboys of differing consoles. So, you'll have a really hard time pinning that one on me.
If Nintendo made something like this, I wouldn't use it. It just doesn't really interest me.

Wow, you summarized my argument so succinctly that I am simply at a loss for words. No, wait; I'm not. However, for the sake of the children on Joystiq (and from reading the comments, I think there's a lot of them here), I'll refrain from saying those words.
My Mii lets me add a small element of customization to my console and games. That's all I want it to do. It's simple, quirky and fun. It only takes a few moments to set up a Mii.
Remember how the PSP was going to be all that and a bag of chips? The screen is too small to be a video player, it's too big to be an MP3 player, and the games take too long to load to be an effective short-term time killer. Less is more. KISS -- Keep It Simple, Stupid.
The Mii system is effective because it's so simple and easy to use. Meanwhile, PSHome sounds like there's a lot of time involved. Hey, maybe some people like that. Myself, I prefer to play games. I mean, that's what you bought your PS3 for, right? To play games? I don't care much for glorified chat rooms. I'll stick to IRC, thank you very much.
One day when I'm a grandparent, I'll be telling my grandkids, "You know back in my day, video game systems used to play video games."

I suppose "complex" is contextual. In my opinion, most games these days have become far too complex. In fact, it's why I rarely game anymore; I simply do not have the time to invest. I like the fact that I can sit down and play through a few mini-games on Wii Sports or Wii Play. It's the reason that the majority of my game playing is spent playing classic titles from the 80s and 90s.

Being a father of one, and with another to follow, my gaming days are also numbered. But, I can still deal with some more complexity sometimes (especially when my son is asleep).
You don't need to go full-bore into complexity, like playing 8-hour shifts to level up in WoW - now that's a seriously complex commitment! However, If you gave me, as an example, Wii Sports Golf vs Tiger Woods Golf for the Wii, I'll take Tiger any day, thanks.
It's striking a balance between the complex and simple, but there is one huge drawback to simplicity: you can't make it more complex; the reverse, however, is not always true for complexity, which can be simplified, which was my point about Miis - I bet you can make Mii-like avatars with the PS3, but not the other way around.
I can completely see your point about Miis. My wife loves the concept. I do too. But still, for me at least, the PS3 has Wii beat this time around in the customization department.

The point: Sony has created an interface similar to the Mii channel with more features and realistic characteristics, but this isn't "cool." Most will probably just use the service to launch online games easily with their friends.
