I am neither for or against Sony right now, nor am I defending any other company. Of sorts, I guess you could call me a "freelance" analyst of sorts when I say this:

This path Sony has taken has many new ideas that can go many ways. To take any single path could be for the worse or the better. The reason is that it comes down to how well this plan is implemented. Give it a few months before you come to major conclusions. However, it is best said this will have ramifications in the industry, period. This will be a great rivalry against Nintendo's Mii culture at the moment. However, it may also be a rival against most other cultures that use electronic communities (the WoW community, Second Life, etc.) I believe this is the group Sony is truly targeting now. And this is a large segment.

And it is also why it comes to how well this gets implemented. It could either be a great revolution or a great flop. All you can do is watch and see what they do.

Nintendo and Microsoft should at the very least pay attention to this. Chances are, this may impact them more than they may believe.

As for the game, good idea for a community to play together and havve fun. I just wonder if it will be worth the price, assuming it remains at the $60 mark. Chances are, they will have to lower it a bit to get it sold enough and to maybe raise PS3 sales.

That's all.

And guys, quit with the harrassment of Sony for pure speculation. The same goes for the other companies, too. It's just irritating.

I'm still not buying a PS3 until a game(s) comes out that I absolutely CAN NOT RESIST. And that probably won't be for a while.

I wanted to chat, dance and shop with a virtual avatar, I woulda kept my Hunter's License for Phantasy Star Universe.

This is a good move by Sony and it probably will add value to the PS3 but I will wait until we seem Home in action before making any kind of decision. The reason is that the VRML part can actually be more of a hindrance then a feature. For all the people that have commented on this thread, how many of you have a second life account. Does wandering around in a VRML environment trading virtual items or buying them with real money sounds fun. What if you want fast access to Home features but you must trek to different virtual places to get what you want. Personally I know that I have no time for VRML worlds but want access to information and features quickly. At this moment for me HOME sounds like Sony forgot what gamers want and thus made something that could have been perfect into a complex beast.

I am also wondering how Sony will be able to handle millions of users on HOME. The PS Network is damn slow as it is so I would love to know how Sony plan on implementing Home and keep bandwidth high all the while charging nothing for the service.

Someone said that this makes Sony on par with XBL but until Sony can solve their own niggles with their network, this is only a concept. Sony network as far as speed is way behind XBL and I just cannot see them starting a service like HOME with the VRML stuff without beefing up the service big time and investing a lot of money doing it. Personally, I will be very surprise if HOME makes it this year or even anytime soon next year.

Okay, yeah, LBP looks great, Home looks awesome (I already explained this), but I agree with everyone else.

If Sony had announced some games today, I'd be buying a PS3 come this holiday season.

LittleBigPlanet = Looks fucking cool and I wish it was on the Wii.

Playstation Home = Looks like a complete waste of time. If they're trying to capture the "Sims" market they're going to fail miserably. While there are a lot of "non-gamers" that enjoy the Sims (wait, maybe they want Nintendo's broader market share too? :P), that is the LAST group of people who will see $500+ as being worth it.

You also said in another post that you hate sony, will never buy a ps3 and you want them to fail as a company and die. So really, how much weight should your opinion carry on topics of features implemented in Sony products?"

It carries about as much weight as your opinion does, you jackass.

It's good to know you took nothing but "samfish hates Sony" from the post I suspect you're thinking of, though. It speaks volumes concerning your reading comprehension, I guess.

I think that everyone is forgetting that this is GDC, not E3. E3 is about announcing and demoing upcoming products for the benefint of the media and retail companies, and the geeks who manage to make thier way in every year (like me). GDC is about sharing development and marketing ideas with development and publishing companies, NOT about making wide media announcements. This GDC seems more E3ish, what with E3 dead and all, but I seriously doubt that GDC is going to become the media-whore that E3 was...something else will come along to fill that slot. Phil isn't trying to convice anyone to buy a PS3, he's trying to give them ideas how to make games for it.

"32. Hmmmm, with all this talk about ripping stuff off I wonder if people know that Microsoft's Gamerscore system is really just a rip off of Ratchet and Clank's Skill point system."

How the hell can you compare one game with the Gamerscore/Achievement system of the 360. Gamerscore spans all your games. That is a horrible comparison.. It's not been done before so stop looking for something that compares. However this Trophey thing is a complete rip-off of MS.

This whole Home thing is like the nerdy kid at school trying to dress and act like the cool kids. I see they even tried to throw some bowling in (Wii Sports anyone?) Sony has left innovation for taking everyone elses idea's and throwing them into their system. Do I think this will help their sales? NO!

Don't you people understand? If Microsoft isn't doing it, then it's stupid. If you copy Microsoft, then you are stupid. Only Microsoft can do good and be right.

This generation: Xbox 360 = Genesis; PS3 = Super Nintendo, Wii = Gameboy.

In America the two consoles will be neck and neck, but worldwide one of them will clearly dominate. The cheaper system will outsell them all, but it is largely a different beast than the big two.

I'm kinda afraid of the "everything is a download" thing. I mean, how much will it cost you to live in a nice apartment?

Or will Sony need to add more trees because the poor people (i.e., those not willing to spend $15 for a sofa) keep sleeping under them?

Looks awesome. If the only thing the haters can serve up is some lame moaning about them using other peoples ideas (which has no bearing whatsoever in the real world when playing games) then I believe Sony did good with that presentation.

Achievements suddenly seem a little dated imho. I own a 360 and never even bothered to check what score I got (some games dole them out easy as you like, some are incredibly stingy, therefore it is no true measure of anything) but when I get a PS3 (this and the return of rumble tipped me off the fence) I'll take more interest in such matters on the PS3.

@James "If Microsoft isn't doing it, then it's stupid."

You're right, Microsoft isn't doing it. Microsoft has already revealed their vision at their GameFest keynote speech last year, and it's the opposite of Sony.

Microsoft's vision is to fit online gaming into the real world. They've discussed integrating XBL messaging, profiles, and lobbies into Windows Vista and Smartphones. Microsoft wants to fit XBL into people's busy lifestyles and connect real-life friends. For example, someone could be working on their PC and get an invite from a friend to join a match on a 360.

Sony's vision is to fit people into a virtual world. It's all about meeting virtual friends instead of connecting real-life friends. And you have to be sitting in front of your console to participate.

It sounds to me like Sony's vision is geared towards people with a lot of time on their hands and few real-life friends to play with, while Microsoft's vision is geared towards active adults with real lives to attend to and real friends to play games with.

Of course, Microsoft has been very slow to implement their vision, with XBL just now coming to Windows. Although, Sony's "Home" world isn't expected until the fall either.

Sarcasm aside, Samfish, You are a fucking troll. You have been a fucking troll as long as you have been posting on the Joystiq boards. You will probably continue to be a fucking troll as long as Joystiq exists. You use Ad Hominem tactics and even fail at doing that well. So, I question the amount of weight your opinion holds on a feature you'll likely never use and will probably never effect you. It seems I was right in doing so.

I personally think the idea is intriguing, but I don't necessarily think it is a good competitor to XBL's achievements. With XBL I can quickly glance at someone's score and view their games while I wait for a lobby to fill up. It's fast and it gives me a good comparison. With Sony's idea, I have to be in an entirely different menu and research each "trophy". It's a neat idea, but not a replacement. And even though Sony is taking the more realistic approach, I feel I like the charm of Nintendo's Mii characters better, but then again this is entirely subjective. It will be interesting how this generation of consoles progress from here.

I'm not a fanboy, I'm unarmed with flames towards any system, I just want to come in peacefully, silence your flames...

Ok, now having owned all 2nd gen systems, I can easily say PS2 had the best games in almost every category except FPS (which Xbox won) and tied for 1st in platformer (along with Nintendo) and won that whole console war between Oct.-Nov 01' when GTA3, THPS3, and MGS2 were all released.

This announcement means almost nothing currently. In the long haul, yes I do believe a good majority of people will think this obvious Second Life knockoff is awesome, but it alone is not enough to buy the system. It's still $600 to play Resistance which is from what I hear a really good FPS, but considering RS:V, GRAW 1 & 2, and GoW are all out, it really doesn't seem worth it for that game alone. VF5 is a great game, but in order to enjoy it with a friend, they have to be good at it. Unfortunately for new players, the VF series isn't a great one for button-mashers. Tekken and DOA take the cake (however myself personally I love the more complicated VF5 system, just not how easy it is to whomp on a new player).

However, this is a vital step in laying the foundation (which unfortunately wasn't done at launch). Once the games do come (and unfortunately I don't think it'll happen this year), then it'll look like a very well rounded system with tons of options other than just games. So it's an important step, but I don't think anyone will care for now.

Also, with PS3 being free to play online, this could suck some serious bandwidth. Premium items will sell to some people, but after playing many free MMO's, only people who are REALLY into the game buy the premium stuff.

And I'm hoping Sony will monitor this for pornographic images cause the bad PR will just come crashing down on them.

So what it is basically is a Multidisk gaming console that can hold 50 games , just like many CD players today, and it would be connected to a huge main hub on the internet. This hub is actually an enormous gaming lobby that looks and responds to the gamer as a living breatheing online world.

My first idea is to have it replicate a mall in outerspace, where gamers can create an identity, and customize a characters appearance that they can control throughout the lobby.

The lobby will be two or three levels high with stairs, elevators or whatever and such, It will also have movie theatres, that the player can go into and watch game trailers and such. There would also be a game room with interactive games, a lounge, a casino, various stores where items, downloads, and clothes can be bought for use with the gamers character. Some things such as downloads can be bought for specific games for real money, and almost all the rest would be bought with the credits earned by either playing mini games, and such.

Heres the part I really like...Because the console is a multidisk player...Players will be able to, switch from one game to another simply by walking through the portal in the mall marked by the title.

So basiclly...I can walk around a lobby that looks like an outerspace mall of sorts, as a character that I created, and interact with other gamers and the surrounding enviroment, and also be able to jump from game to game while in this lobby because it has a multi disk game player in the hardware.

@champe

As if vertical stands, backwards compatibility, and multi-core preccessors are something new?

If I remember correctly, the original Sega Genesis was backwards compatible with Master System games. Another backwards compatible system was the GameBoy Color, which still came out three years before the PS2.

Also, doing some searching on Wikipedia, I found that the first multi-core proccessor was released by INTEL in 2000 called the POWER 4, and then the Itanium 2 came out from Intel in 2002.

Oh, and PCs have been standing vertically for over a decade, although that's probably not a very good comparison.

So, in conclusion, your defense of Sony is very flawed and I pat you on the back for such a flawed argument. :)

I find it mildly frustrating that the Fanboys that have been slagging off Microsoft's gamerscore and Nintendo's Mii content are now lauding this venture. It isn't the 'copying' so much as the notion that people who were mocking the above before are now seemingly satisfied with the concept when it is on their own console.

This is not a killer app. It is a nice touch and possibly a useful tool dependant on how it is ultimately implemented. It looks reasonably well thought through and well executed. I STILL don't think that the PS3 has done anything to justify a purchase though. I am NOT interested in blu-ray and given the history of Sony's bespoke formats (see minidisk and UMD etc) I don't think it worth investing in at this point in time (even if Microsoft are aiding them with crazy Windows Vista security protection affecting the HD-DVD display).

I want GAMES, Sony. Whats more I want games I cannot do without. FFX, Metal Gear, GTA and Pro Ev sold me on the PS2, and you kept it going with Guitar Hero, God of War, Disgaea, Shadow of the Collossus and Katamari Damacy. Where are the killer exclusives, and doubly so for where are the NON-FPS ones? (sorry but I will always prefer to play them on a PC so they aren't a selling point to me personally).

Right now I see Sony making the same mistakes with the PS3 and it made with the PSP and there really is not justification for it.

P.S. I know there will be some who dislike me taking a shot at Sony in this thread where they are actually delivering something, but I just wanted to put a thought out there; IS THIS THE SORT OF THING TO APPEAL TO YOUR HARDCORE GAMERS WHO LAUD YOUR 1337 NEXT-GEN HARDWARE? Personally, I think not.

it doesnt take 4 months to come up with this stuff, so those saying its a wii ripoff are ignorant, this has been in development for some time now, this will destroy XBL, wii doesnt even count in the console wars. its like comparing a lambo(ps3) a ferrari(360) and a civic(wii), sure the civic is fun. but you only bought it cuz you cant afford either of the other two.

lol this is not anymore a sony post, but a wii fanboy thread xD

anyways, if i didnt know any better id say nintendo was copying off sony with their crappy Miis!!

lol

just joking :P

though the PS3 is gonna be awesome, i think later on it will be:
PS3
Wii
360

or

Wii
PS3
360

i doubt that the 360 will come on top, coz of its crap functionality, the only things the 360 is good for is its big range of games, price (not talking about the Elite) and the 'fun of Xbox Live'!!

but as technology goes further consoles get cheaper, and Sony is making awesome stuff for the PS3, this will crush the 360, though the wii will still compete

this is what i think!!
