Super Paper Mario GDC '07 impressions

If you only saw screenshots like the one above, you'd be forgiven for mistaking Super Paper Mario for an All-stars-style update of the original Super Mario Bros. When you see the 95 percent complete build on the GDC show floor, though, it's easy to see that the game is a true continuation of the Paper Mario series, with a few significant changes thrown in.
Everything you remember from Intelligent Systems' two Paper Mario games is here -- the irreverent writing style, the smoothly animated flat characters set in a detailed polygonal world and the items and leveling structure will all be familiar to Paper Mario fans. The now-familiar Paper Mario sidekicks also return in the form of Pixls -- little hovering companions that can perform specialized functions like turning into bombs or grabbing nearby enemies.
What's changed is how you interact with the enemies -- through platform-style jumps instead of turn-based battles. It's amazing how the lack of jarring, momentum-stealing battles every 30 seconds transforms the game into a more fluid and much more enjoyable experience.
The other major change, as has already been shown in countless online videos, is the ability to switch between a 2D side-view and a 3D over the shoulder view with a tap of the A button. It's interesting to see the familiar 2D environments converted into sometimes-complex, layered 3D environments, though the puzzles that used this mechanic in the demo seemed pretty facile.
The Wii's motion-sensitive controls allow for some occasional aerial acrobatics, but for the most part, the game brings back the simple run and jump control scheme of the NES Mario games with little embellishment. Which is just fine by us. Just because the Wii allows for motion-sensitive controls doesn't mean they should be shoehorned in when other, simpler controls work just as well or better.

I have a bad feeling that nintendo is going to burn out poor mario with sooo many mario games, I hope they just lay back and keep mario fresh and dont go over boards...... because we all love mario

that looks seriously awesome - i can't wait!

Without meaning to sound pedantic, isn't the perspective in the game all wrong. When you change the view to 3d you can see that what appears to be a straight line of blocks in 2d is actually a series of blocks set at various depths in the background in 3d. Therefore when the game is in 2d, the blocks set further towards the background should actually appear smaller then those in the foreground due to foreshortening. This would mean that the blocks set further towards the background would have to be bigger to give the illusion of forming a straight line with those nearer the foregound when viewed in 2d. But the videos show that they're not...

Whoopeee..another GC game adapated to the Wii. What a revolution this is. I mean, taking old games and slapping some gimmick movements on it will make it the type of game that re-invintes the genre, right? Yeah, except that pretty much every attept has been stillborn. Oh, but you guys still try to justify a $250 system in order to play Wii Sports! What a joke this the Wii has quickly become. Pay premium prices for ten year-old games. Keep on drinking that kool-aid people and you might one day actually start to outrank Apple zealots when it comes to false hope.
Aex @ Mar 8th 2007 5:01AM
@AL
A 2D world shouldn't have depth, which is also the love factor for games like this and Crush. Watching this trailer I was a little disappointed in the game, but I found a better trailer related that made me a little more interested. Had this just been a puzzle platformer minus the rpg elements, I may have been a little more interested in it. But that is just my preference. Looks like it will turn out to be a fun game.

Although I may agree with your point, it doesn't really belong here. Just because we may not agree with the path Nintendo has chosen to take, it does not mean there is need to bring it up in every Wii related thread. There will be plenty of threads in the future directed towards Nintendo's decisions with the Wii, leave those comments there. If you wanna flame, go to a gay bar.
Rubang B @ Mar 8th 2007 5:16AM
Hey Gavin, um... as a Wii-owner I don't need to "justify" $250 (with a free game) as much as you need to justify $400 or $600 (with no games). And the premium prices I pay for games are less than yours too. Please stop typing out of your ass.
Rubang B @ Mar 8th 2007 5:22AM
@azesino, I know what you mean, but I'm not worried about Mario being worked to death like Sonic or Mega Man. Mario's classic platforming (aside from New SMB) has been relegated to Super Princess Peach, Yoshi's Island DS, and Wario: Master of Disguise. Now everybody's getting a piece, so Mario can casually tease us with his sports and RPGs until the Galaxy drops the bomb. I'm seriously counting Mario Galaxy as Mario 7.
Slaziman @ Mar 8th 2007 5:46AM
@Gavin
Eventually there will be no more GC games to Wii-fy and PS2 games to port, besides, we don't know exactly what Wii elements are incorporated into the game yet. Wii did Zelda TP very good, so it might do this game some good too. Paying premium prices for old games? What's premium about them? Getting the original carts and the original console is more expensive, downloading ROMs and playing on your computer is less convenient. The Wii is just starting, it might take a while to see games that use the Wii controller in a really good way, without said games being mini-game compilations. You should stop spreading FUD, what's funny about making people feel bad about their purchase?
Nate Birch @ Mar 8th 2007 5:57AM
"Keep on drinking that kool-aid people and you might one day actually start to outrank Apple zealots when it comes to false hope."
Yes...because the Wii is only a success because hardcore Nintendo zealots are buying it.
That's why it's the fastest selling console out there, that's it still sells out as fast as it's put in stores, that's why stories on it have hit pretty much every major mainstream news source, that's why one anylist after another predicts good things or an outright win for Nintendo this generation...that's a hell of a lot of "Kool-Aid" Nintendo has been serving up. How far does you head have to be up your ass to think it's just silly Nintendo fanboys buying the Wii at this point?

Mario jumping on enemeis = "OMG looks so fun!"
*Aex: "Although I may agree with your point, it doesn't really belong here."
Newsflash: your opinions are not more important than anyone else's.
*Tom: "Hey Gavin, I've got an idea... why don't you go fuck yourself."
Nintendo people are so friendly, aren't they? Yeah, someone got shot for a PS3, but all those Nintendo people were hugging each other and singing Simon and Garfunkel in their camp-out tents.
Hypocrites.
Rubang B @ Mar 8th 2007 6:59AM

Aex's comment was a reply to Gavin, not any comment saying 'OMG looks so fun'.

With that said, I must agree that I am dissapointed Nintendo made this Wii-only. What about people who aren't in great financial shape - they can't afford another Wii. He was origianally holding out for Super Paper Mario, now what is he going to do? Nothing. At LEAST make a GC release out of it too, Nintendo, like Twilight Princess.
Zachary Hinchliffe @ Mar 8th 2007 7:19AM
Ack, typos abound in that last post. It should have read, "With that said, I must agree that I am dissapointed Nintendo made this Wii-only. What about people who aren't in great financial shape - people who can't afford a Wii? Like one of my best friends - he was origianally holding out for Super Paper Mario. Now what is he going to do? Nothing. At LEAST make a GC release out of it too, Nintendo, like Twilight Princess."
Sorry, I don't exactly think the clearest at 7 in the morning.
Infil @ Mar 8th 2007 7:22AM
I was hoping for 14 Super Paper Mario comments, and instead, I got about 4. The rest had to do with responses to flamebait posted by a troll. Sigh. Just leave them alone, and they'll leave. Trolls don't do well when they don't get any responses.
I think the game looks great. The fact that size or shadowing doesn't tell you what objects are behind or in front of you in the 2D case, I think, makes the game more interesting (even if it's not how such a situation would really work in real life). This means you can never be sure what's in the 3D world from the 2D perspective, which is clearly what the developers wanted to be the case.
Definitely on my "must buy" list, and a good solid title for Wii, at about the right time!

Sadly the Gamecube died quietly in its sleep several months ago. Nintendo has switched all of its developing games to the Wii as there is little incentive to continue supporting the purple cubewith the Wii being a runaway success. This probably has angered several holdouts like you, but it is a sound business move from them and we'll eventually find a Wii... right?
As for Super Paper Mario, glad to see it coming out soon. Can't wait.
Charles @ Mar 8th 2007 8:21AM
Although I do plan to get this game, I don't understand why it's a Wii exclusive. If the motion controls are barely integrated, why couldn't this work on the Gamecube? Nintendo loses out on potential purchases by Gamecube owners who haven't made the switch yet.
Also, I'd like to see the original Paper Mario on the Virtual Console as I've never played it. And I've barely made progress on The Thousand Year Door. Time to get cracking!
hegemonyhog @ Mar 8th 2007 8:38AM
This reminds me of the experience of playing SMB the day I opened my NES back in the 80's. With a simple mechanic, the world around you changes - just pressing down on top of a pipe could port you to another world, jumping up in an otherwise flat section could land you a coin, a mushroom or a life...if this game works, I think it'll be one of my favorites of this generation, hands down.
roflcopter @ Mar 8th 2007 8:40AM
This looks amazing, loving the art style and the 2D/3D switching. I'm glad this game finally sees the light, why was Nintendo so quiet about this for months? This is one of the most promising Wii games.
daniel @ Mar 8th 2007 8:40AM
i cant wait for this,i just hope the european release isnt much later that the us and japan dates, i really like the art style of this even more than thousand year door, im hoping for super paper mario on vc as well i missed out on that whole generation
Pal @ Mar 8th 2007 12:37PM
"Oh my goodness!"
That was fantastic.
Pawsie @ Mar 8th 2007 9:34AM
I think it's funny listening to the people protesting against nintendo and the reuse of mario for this game.. which was originally on the GCN. Ignoring the fact that few people bought the system and it was originally the lesser of the 3 big boys.
They could have easily made this for the Gamecube... But then there would be competition between the two nintendo systems... If I remember correctly, Sony wanted people to buy PSPs.. but they keep making high selling games for both the PSP and the PS2.. like with Grand Theft Auto. Many of the people that bought the PSP for those games... were pretty pissed seeing they didn't have to :)
And it's also funny seeing people say the wii is successful solely because of Nintendo Fans.. ignoring that their logic woudl be flaw.. or the other nintendo products would be as successful.. But the other systems didn't do so well.. so 'something changed' It's a laugh seeing all the grudges between system loyalist.. Seriously.. if the GameCube did as well as Nintendo expected, they would have easily let Sony and Microsoft make new system while they kept the old. Sega taught us that.
Personally I love the paper mario series.. It's one of the few marios they got right on the money.. It's what Mario should have been like when they were making those cartoons.. Though I understand some people's frustration that this seems like any other mario game.. Though they're ignoring the elements involved. It's the paper mario game reflecting towards the traditional game. It's a flatformer with RPG elements. It's a completely new game. It just looks traditional.
People can look at it as spending good money for old games... but I think the fact would be they're not the targetted consumers, nintendo is trying to get people who normally don't play video games.. while still keeping average gamers happy. So I think the price justifies itself
generaldane @ Mar 8th 2007 10:11AM
using some of you guys logic i suppose eternal darkness suck since it was originally intended for the n64
ssuk @ Mar 8th 2007 10:56AM

This game looks excellent. Reminds me that I still need to finish The Thousand Year Door.

more rehashed tacked on motion controls, yay.

While this game may still look like a pure platformer on the surface, the RPG elements are what distinguishes it as a Paper Mario game. If you look closely at the video, it's clear that these elements still play an important role.
Jumping on enemies shows how much damage you do to it. Normally, this wouldn't be necessary in a pure platformer. In an RPG, damage count matter because enemies in later parts of the game get much stronger. That's where the enemy cards that were introduced in the video come into play.
Since it is a Paper Mario game, I expect that the HP/FP/Badge leveling system that has been used in previous installments will make another appearance. One of the biggest changes will probably be how timed hits are executed if they still remain.
deaftly @ Mar 8th 2007 1:07PM
hope its not as short as new super mario bros
FSK405K @ Mar 8th 2007 2:14PM
So when do we get Paper Mario (N64) on the VC? I've got 1000-Door on GCN but never played the original. Also, SUPER MARIO RPG where are you?
Rubang B @ Mar 8th 2007 4:07PM
I'm hoping that Nintendo starts to strategically release old games on the VC a week or two before the new sequels come out. I want to see N64 Paper Mario come out on the VC a couple weeks before Super Paper Mario comes out, and I want to see Metroid and Super Metroid come out right before Metroid Prime 3, and N64 Smash Bros. right before Brawl. It'd give us a week or two to get pumped up. YES!

You may want to remember those wise words next time you feel like jumping into a PS3 thread.
