DJ Max Portable 2 spotted at GDC
Imagine our surprise when we found this magically delicious Korean treat hiding in the PlayStation booth. We did the investigative footwork and no, DJ Max Portable 2 is not coming stateside. Sony only brought the import rhythm title to GDC to show both publishers and developers what kind of unique titles are possible on their hand held system. So unless a deep pocketed publisher saw Pentavision's sequel and liked what they saw, this predominately English title will remain exclusive to Korea.
We didn't have time to cry over missed opportunities as we were too busy checking out the new features. DJ Max 2 sports a new Fever ability that acts a whole lot like Guitar Hero's Star Power. By successfully hitting notes, you fill up your Fever ability which, when activated, speeds up the notes and applies a 2x score multiplier. By filling up yet another Fever, you can activate it again for a 3x multiplier, so on and so forth until -- well, we got it up to six and it was getting mighty hard to read.
DJ Max Portable 2 will be shipping out from import shops come the end of March.

Probably the only game that would make me get a PSP again.
Aex @ Mar 9th 2007 7:15PM
I want this game so badly.
bounchfx @ Mar 9th 2007 7:57PM
Wow, this would make me get a psp.
but it's not coming to usa.
tough shit. sorry sony
Genius @ Mar 9th 2007 8:15PM
Never heard of play-asia, have you?
bounchfx @ Mar 9th 2007 11:43PM
You know what, that's quite funny, because I have.
But since I don't have a psp anymore nor do I wish to spend more than 50$ on one, I wasn't aware that it was region free. It's good to know. when psp price drops I'll definitely look to picking this up.
Thanks.
Lixie @ Mar 9th 2007 9:07PM
Go ahead and import it. I imported the first one and it's nearly all in English. I'd guestimate 95% english, even most of the songs are in English. I see no reason why its sequel wouldn't be as import friendly.

To be fair, Play-Asia's prices + decent shipping are a bitch if you're short on cash.
Still, the first game almost justified my purchase of a PSP. I'll gladly import this one.
FSK405K @ Mar 9th 2007 10:18PM
So, this is like Elite Beat Agents but without the tapping?
Kevin @ Mar 9th 2007 11:37PM
@ #8
It's more like playing Beatmania with a D-Pad and buttons.
hvnlysoldr @ Mar 9th 2007 11:45PM
I never really liked DDR or Beatmania. I don't have enough rhythm or agility. Even using a controller I can't get past standard difficulty. EBA is completely different though. I have beaten it on Hard Rock and have started getting A's in songs. It was a different apsect of difficulty and much more addictive for me.
you know @ Mar 10th 2007 12:08AM
Fuck that game looks hardcore!
Paul @ Mar 10th 2007 1:33AM
Im not sure this has ever been mentioned or discussed but here it goes..
Why can't they make a Guitar Hero for the PSP? Hear me out.. The PSP has a mini USB port, why not make a mini guitar to plug into it? It would mainly only work on road trips but it could totally work, and would totally kick ass. Please make this Activision, you know you want to. And now you know I want you to.
Dave @ Mar 13th 2007 4:15AM
@ 13
how do you hold both?
DCJoeDog @ Mar 10th 2007 4:59AM
I, for one, welcome our robot-djmax-playing-to-perfection overlords
windsof @ Mar 10th 2007 7:33AM
One of the best PSP games, the first one was amazing, well worth importing. Why they don't release this in Europe and US i don't know.....
ssuk @ Mar 10th 2007 8:09AM
Hipocracy to the best, Sony hates importers but hey, when it's to their benifit, they're pro-import. Fuck you Sony.
Marco Cano Jr @ Mar 10th 2007 8:43AM
"Probably the only game that would make me get a PSP again."
Jeez, do you have that sentence programed to your keyboard? I'm surprised no said "My PSP is collecting dust" yet. I understand that some of you people don't like or play certain systems but can some of you say something different once in awhile.
"Hipocracy to the best, Sony hates importers but hey, when it's to their benifit, they're pro-import. Fuck you Sony." - ssuk
So Sony is person? Who hates importers? You need to be more specific man. First of all highly doubt every single person who works at Sony hates importers? And 2nd of all, where did you hear that Sony hates importers?
sheppy @ Mar 10th 2007 10:05AM
I have the Limited Edition DJ Max 2 preordered.
And incidenty, who's saying Play-Asias prices are nuts? $3-$4 for cheapest shipping, most PSP games are $40-$50... Princess Corwn The Best edition is coming out soon on their website for $30. They are usually pretty fair on pricing. Hell, I have the Asia version of Assassin's Creed preordered with a 12" figure for $59.90....
Myke @ Mar 10th 2007 10:11AM
Yeah, I gotta go with Sheppy on this one, PlayAsia's prices are amazingly reasonable.
jdap @ Mar 10th 2007 10:49AM
Why do I carry around my PSP & DS (along with a plethora of games for both--yes, I said pleth-thor-uh) in the same lapchop bag? Yet everytime I go to pick one up to play something, it's Elite Phoenix Wario Hotel Cooking Mama!?!
PS: to the comment re: guitar hero for PSP, great idea...I'm still waiting for an adapter to use a PS2 dual-shock controller via mini-USB. If it's battery life on the PSP they're worried about, disable the shock portion OR bundle in the higher mA battery with controller for ~$40-50.
ShortFuse @ Mar 10th 2007 12:29PM
Btw, that's a girl playing. Sick
And... why did the lyric read: "i want to take it deep inside"
um...???
sheppy @ Mar 10th 2007 12:33PM
"And... why did the lyric read: "i want to take it deep inside""
Welcome to the reason why it will either not come stateside or come drastically changed. Not to mention licensing issues.
Slaziman @ Mar 10th 2007 1:58PM
HOLY HELL that looks hard. Those fingers are pushing buttons like mad!
Crio @ Mar 10th 2007 2:46PM
@18
Maybe it's just me. I didn't say "nuts", though.
Plus, I always go for the more expensive shipping over the non-trackable ones. Lost my package the first time and just like to play it safe.
Crio @ Mar 10th 2007 2:48PM
Just to clarify: I love Play-asia more than anything. It'd ruin me if Sony ever went after them. :)
sheppy @ Mar 10th 2007 3:01PM
"I love Play-asia more than anything. It'd ruin me if Sony ever went after them. :)"
No worries about that. Play-asia always follows ceast and desist requests.
Hirsbrunner @ Mar 10th 2007 3:03PM
Remember the story where EGM took the Wii to a bunch of old folks?
Imagine if they'd had 'em play this. Bayer's stock would shoot through the roof.
required @ Mar 10th 2007 3:05PM
I'm not familiar with this title.
Is it anything like this: http://psp.ign.com/articles/712/712121p1.html
sheppy @ Mar 10th 2007 4:55PM
Sorry, required. It's nothing like that.
Gitaroo Man has a set path through the game and likewise, has a limited soundtrack because of that. Gitaroo Man also has a dramatically different way of inputting the tones. Guitaroo Man more closely resembles titles like Parappa The Rappa or Space Channel 5.
DJ Max Portable however more closely resembles titles like DDR, PIU, Beatmania, and Pop'N Music. DJ Max 2 will have about 60 all new songs (according to the trailer... found here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=brRQHFruRE0) and features interesting animated videos in the backgrounds. Also, while Beatmania has a HUGE learning curve, nOOb Beatmania players have found DJ Max to be quite approachable. Even veteran Beatmania players can find something challenging in DJ Max.
Eggman @ Mar 10th 2007 5:07PM
I couldn't find anything difficult in it. The PC version, which is infinitely more fun than using a bunch of buttons on the PSP was very easy and really couldn't hold my attention the way Beatmania IIDX has. The only reason DJ Max Portable has anything difficult to it is because it's very awkward to play with the PSP.
Enaress @ Mar 10th 2007 6:32PM
I'll probably pick this game up. I'm pretty avid with the first game, I'm passing difficulties around 12 on 6button mode, and 8button is just stupid so I ignore that.
Indeed this game is sorta like IIDX for PSP, one of the reasons I like it because IIDX is a great rhythm game.
