Hey silky, to sum this up for you, Jaffe and Smith both had ideas that had nothing to do with sewing, so they lost to the mad genius Pajitnov, who created a game that was not only the simplest, but also the most complex. As a bonus, Pajitnov's idea was the only one to involve sewing.

Jaffe's idea was to throw paper airplanes after sewing artwork and "weapons" on them.

Smith's idea was to use the needle to tap the cloth as if it were a stylus and a DS.

Pajitnov's Stitch & Cross reminds me of an old 3M bookshelf game called Twixt. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twixt
3M in came out with some really great games in the 60's and 70's like, Aquire, Bazzaar as well as Twixt.

TMBG FTW! Anyway, I didn't read most of that, but I just wanted to quip on your They Might Be Giants reference. Long live Tetris!
