Why the hell would they say the Playstation 3 "chip" is being dropped, but not give a proper explanation of what chip, or why? Kinda stupid.

In general, it's somewhat risky to go to the general media for technical details like this.

They are, at best, business reporters. They aren't design engineers.

It says in the article what chip is being dropped but "Sony drops PlayStation 3 chip that allows play of PlayStation 2 games" is a bit of a long title.

Seems perfectly legitimate to me to say that they are dropping a PlayStation 3 chip. They did.

It would be funny if that was true

If they dropped the CELL but kept the Emotion Engine

Then it would have HD graphics with PS2 level physics/AI

that would be funnier than hell...

No, it should say "Playstation 2 chip dropped" from PS3. Since its the EE/GS that got dropped, nothing unique to the PS3. Regardless, its a news title that most internet blogs got right and not Reuters.
