now that you mention it, I AM very interested in knowing what they do with female characters to make them more bearable for western audiences. I know they make their voices a lot less squeaky but what else?

This is an attempt to prey on either drug addictions (misspelling) or sex addictions (correct spelling). Either way, the Squenix folks certainly know how to prey on RPGers' weaknesses.

Also, to give my two cents, game localisation is overrated as it is. Sometimes we don't want everything to be more 'American', especially not me since I'm British. Cultures in games are often portrayed much better in Japanese versions than American version because localisation likes to take whatever deep and explained part of the game, rip it apart and crayon in parts of the game so it fits with American culture. Hell, even games which are set in JAPAN get localised to be more American, great examples of this are Phoenix Wright, Yakuza and Jet Set Radio, although the list goes on.
How about you guys save yourself a job, and just translate the text. We don't care much for your American culture, we don't give a damn about how 'acceptable' something is to other cultures, just don't fuck with parts of the game which are sometimes it's best asset. You're killing games, stop it.

I'm afraid that doesn't make much more sense than the machine translation version, ssuk. For example, you have apparently translated "localization policy" as "不拡大" but that word means "non-expansion." It could be used to mean a totally different kind of "localization policy" (i.e. a policy to keep things local, rather than expanding it) but it's totally wrong for this context. "Localization policy" would actually be ローカライズ方針 or something similar. You also need to work on grammar. But don't get too discouraged. When I was first learning Japanese I couldn't do any better, but now I'm a professional translator.

So you suggest we go back to the FF1 era of localization, so that almost nobody can understand what the hell is actually going on?

Since you speak japanese, I think you should just import, and not try to ruin it for the rest of us.

Crono - false dilemma. The problems with localization in that era had more to do with the way games were stored; the translation needed to have the same number of characters as the original. Now it is possible to get a perfect translation without touching anything else about the game.

Japanese puns don't make the transition well, but who wants puns in their epic RPG?
