God of War PSP & PS3 details: rumble on PS3, confirms director
During the official God of War II launch party in San Francisco last night, game director Cory Barlog spoke briefly about the franchise's future on PSP -- and spoke vaguely about the eventual sequel on PlayStation 3. Here's the bullet-point roundup of details scooped by 1UP:God of War on PSP (untitled):
- ReadyAtDawn developing (as speculated)
- Not a port; Barlog: "It is its own story that connects to the overall story" -- but where that story fits into the overall story arch was not discussed; Barlog does say, "I want the PSP version to not feel like the PSP version ... it's just as big. It's just as epic. It's God of War." Grrrrrr!
- Original level design (but the game might revisit familiar areas); Barlog: "We're not reusing any levels. We're not doing any of that stuff. It's all original content."
- Replacement for PS2's right-analogue dodge/roll control is still being worked out; devs are considering a toggle function
- No confirmation of PS2 or PS3 connectivity; ReadyAtDawn did create a connectivity feature for Daxter (with Jak X: Combat Racing); Barlog on possible PS Home tie-in: "Home was in development [during GoW2], but nobody really on our development team was knowledgeable about it, so there wasn't much we could do about it."
- No explicit hints of PSP game in God of War II bonus disc content; Barlog: "No, I'm smart. We took out any references to stuff we don't want out yet ... But there are some things in there that may relate to a future game if we do it..."
God of War on PS3 ("God of War 3" unconfirmed):
- Franchise will be in 1080p with SixAxis (motion) and vibration functions
- Barlog on PSN support: "We do want to have support for the network platform -- I think it's huge. And I'm looking at a lot of stuff right now that if I do end up doing anything with 3, I want to utilize that."
- Barlog on co-op: "Does co-op have a place in God of War? If we can do something unique with it, yeah, but it is really an early exploration of that in my head really. It's not even a discussion with the team."
- Barlog on episodic content: "I think the game's way too big. There are too many art assets."
- Barlog on embracing 'Game 3.0': "User created levels for God of War -- I don't think it's a realistic proposition."

Sima @ Mar 13th 2007 2:24PM

Sooooooooo last gen
coyurtney @ Mar 13th 2007 2:42PM
So if rumble is coming back , shouldn't we all wait to get a PS3 when the new version comes out?
ssuk @ Mar 13th 2007 2:40PM
Crush, God of War, Locoroco, Me and My Katamari... PSP seems tempting, but I believe I'll pick one up when they're much cheaper. (I'm poor. =()

65nm Cell, rumble, actual games (this GoW3 sounds like late 08 at the earliest), price...there's every reason to wait on buying a PS3.
.

I'm so getting a PS3... after the first price drop. Just like the Xbox360, and the next revision of Wii.

God of War devs are so stuck up.
Joop @ Mar 13th 2007 3:32PM
While they are a first party dev team, and they do occasionally let stuff slip out, I wouldn't get your hopes up too soon.
He flat out said they haven't even started on GoW3 yet, so how can you confirm things like 1080p and rumble? It sounds a lot like a spec wishlist, which Sony tends to throw out as hype, like all the ps3 games that were supposed to be 1080p/60fps yet were 720p/30fps when they actually came out.
It'd be a great move if they learned from their mistake and brought rumble back, since the public clearly wants it, but the lawsuit just settled and GoW3 hasn't even started yet, let alone has been confirmed, so it's way too early to see that as anything beyond wild speculation, no matter how desirable it is.
x876543 @ Mar 13th 2007 3:36PM
As per 11 (Joop), I guess I won't be getting a PS3 until rumble and 1080p are standard for all games... and a price drop.
comtar @ Mar 13th 2007 10:33PM
@Joop
I completely agree, when I get a PS3, I'm importing Virtua Fighter 5 cause that version is in 1080p, but is 720p in America. I have no idea why either, the game runs just as well in either mode. But 1080p is slick and pretty. I can understand some high-end graphical games maxing at 720p. Like Metal Gear Solid 4 footage for now has alot of slowdown in some places, and probably wouldn't run in 1080p just cause of framerate issues.
But I'm tired of Japan getting the games that have the higher res versions and we are not. There's no reason at all for any of this, and for a system that is trying to compete against the X-box 360 and show that it's the better system, why the downgrade?! Why is Sony of America intentionally kicking down the quality of the games to make it look the same as the X-box 360. I don't get it.
mj @ Mar 13th 2007 3:46PM
Does it bother anyone that they haven't seen Home yet?
NATO_Duke @ Mar 13th 2007 4:27PM
@ x876543
LoL - good to hear you are going to get a game system of some sort some day.
Anyway, mj, I imagine that Home doesn't matter that much for them in game developing. They make some trophies - big whoop.

As a PS3 owner........and having played MOTORSTORM the last week.....
Wait for the new version and the rumble controllers.....get an XBOX 360 w/ Crackdown and Winning Eleven and DDR Universe.
Is Sony EVER going to get their online in order? HOME will not function in the state it is in.....
Jake @ Mar 13th 2007 5:41PM
Built in rumble is sooo last gen. Sony should create an innovative rumble add-on to the controller.
How much do you want to bet that when Sony adds rumble, it is billed as a superior rumble to the competition. It will therefore be new, innovative, and better. It won't at all be a feature they said wasn't important then added later. ;)
How do you spell de ja vou?
AssemblyLineHuman @ Mar 13th 2007 6:19PM
That settles it. I'm getting a PS3. =)
Sly @ Mar 14th 2007 2:05AM
65 nano rumble, PS3 makes me humble. God of War 2 will be great, God of War 3 don't be late.
Cuja @ Mar 14th 2007 2:15AM
And you never will. What makes you think that Sony's kicking down the quality. Did you ever think that Sony hasn't figure out how to kick it up to the 360.
Wes @ Apr 5th 2007 6:13PM
The PS3 does not have a better graphics card than the xbox 360. Read the technical specs people. The PS3 basically uses a Nvidia 7800 semi-eqivilent video card, however, has less memory bandwidth to its memory which is a pretty big bottleneck. The bandwidth is 60% that of a 7800 GTX.

Look around and you can find other reviews of the GPU (Graphical Processing Units) between the xbox 360 and the PS3. Xbox 360s graphics card > PS3s graphics card which maybe one of the reasons the xbox 360 is always running louder as the fan on the more powerful video card is louder. Its the PS3s video card is trying to play catchup to the 360. The PS3 uses a tried tested and true approach to avoid slow downs and bad fps performance. They decrease the resolution in some situations.
