Nintendo.com grows 91% as Playstation.com shrinks 8%
Wii's recent popularity (likely amplified by the online folk) helped increase Nintendo.com's unique visitors by 91% over last year, this in stark contrast to Playstation.com's 8% decrease of total unique visitors according to a Nielsen/NetRatings report released today. Xbox.com saw a 47% traffic increase over last year.
That's a good metric showing how both Nintendo's and Microsoft's online audiences have grown as PlayStation enthusiasm (at least to its proper website) has dwindled. Web junkies click onward for the full skinny on all that traffic jazz.
| Site | Feb '06 | Feb '07 | YOY Growth |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo.com | 856 | 1,631 | 91% |
| Xbox.com | 827 | 1,218 | 47% |
| PlayStation.com | 1,105 | 1,016 | -8% |

Geez, are the Wii fanboys really gasping at straws here?
Whats next? How many people touched the Ps3 vs Wii/360?
Give up, PS3 is going to be at the top again in a few years.
Ps3 owners dont need to go Sony website, there is really nothing there..of interest anyway.
Fatass of Kickassness @ Mar 13th 2007 7:07PM
Wow, Storm, what a terrible post.
NeverSage @ Mar 13th 2007 7:08PM
PS3 on top? I'm skeptical of that. I'm sure it'll do better than it is now. But I would say there's no way we're going to see another PS2-esque win.
required @ Mar 13th 2007 7:10PM
Not sure if this was a factor and I might be wrong but I believe sites like jp.playstation.com and eu.playstation.com used to be non .com sites last year and were playstation.co.uk playstation.jp just like how playstation.dk is today.
upirons @ Mar 13th 2007 7:13PM
What I would really like to know is how many Playstation underground members revoked their memberships in the last 6 months or so.
I did!
oGMo @ Mar 13th 2007 7:14PM
So in short, more people are *reading* about Nintendo, while more people are off *playing* Playstation.
Seriously. Who actually goes to these sites? I've spent 10 hours since Saturday playing Okami. Clearly, I should have been visiting playstation.com or nintendo.com instead.
I can't remember having ever visited either one.
Shagittarius @ Mar 13th 2007 7:16PM
I believe this is probably due to people trying to obtain products they cannot obtain through other retail/web outfits. People probably try to go straight to the source.
Anonymous @ Mar 13th 2007 7:21PM
Joystiq at it's best, once again...
Rubang B @ Mar 13th 2007 7:22PM
Shagittarius is right. If you can't find it on the shelves, you see if you can order it from the website. That's how I got my damn component cables and my 4th nunchuck.
And to comment #1:
599 U.S. dollars!
NeverSage @ Mar 13th 2007 7:27PM
@Shagittarius
Yeah, basically this is probably just showing the availbility of consoles for purchase. If you can get a PS3 in stores, you're not going to look for them on the PS3 website.
scepia @ Mar 13th 2007 7:34PM
Wow, what a educated comment there Storm. Because this new-fangled intertrons has nothing to do with young kids that purchase these systems.
coyurtney @ Mar 13th 2007 8:07PM
Wow, the Sony Fanboys are out finally.
Anyway, the thing I find weird is how much more the Wii is selling compared to the PS3 when you can't even find a Wii, but I see PS3 last at my local Target and Bestbuy for over a week.
I don't believe PS3 will ever check up with PS2, but if they don't lower the price it won't even come close.
I want want, but no way in hell is it worth that price.
C. Grant @ Mar 13th 2007 8:08PM
rarehero: Really? Then why is the report listed on Nielsen's website as being published yesterday?

rio @ Mar 13th 2007 8:13PM
Is PS3 done yet? I mean it's been forever since anyone, I mean ANYONE has said ANYTHING positive about PS3 or Sony....Well except for Sony themselves.
The PS3 is virtually condemed!
JuanC @ Mar 13th 2007 8:22PM
The ps3 has been pwned by Nintendo!! XD
Sonicandtails @ Mar 13th 2007 8:28PM
Actually, now that I think of it, I have been to nintendo.com and xbox.com before, but never playstation.com!
Jay @ Mar 13th 2007 8:29PM
I'm fairly certain that the Xbox website's 47% was mostly due to people looking for warranty information on their defective X360's.
Christopher Grant @ Mar 13th 2007 8:37PM
"mean it's been forever since anyone, I mean ANYONE has said ANYTHING positive about PS3 or Sony"
Are you sure about that? Maybe you missed Home ... or LittleBigPlanet, which just about everyone on Team 'Stiq is excited as all get out about.
rarehero: your comment was deleted because it was erroneous. If you can't be bothered to double check things before commenting, why bother?
Gavin @ Mar 13th 2007 8:43PM
This means nothing.....NOTHING.
Point in case, Mac fans are all over the web. You can't go on Digg without stepping in a mess of Mac bullshit. They still haven't garnered more than seven or eight percent of the market. Web hype doesn't really affect the general consumer.
Defenestrator2.0 @ Mar 13th 2007 9:10PM
If I could rate this post out of ten, I would slam it with an 11 simply for the picture. Anything making fun of Ted Stevens gets an instant favorite in my book. Though, just for those who don't get the picture, it's not a big truck. It's not something that you dump something on. Remember that.
Farmer @ Mar 13th 2007 9:17PM
Sure. Maybe web hype doesn't effect the general consumer. So what.
I don't care if you are a Sony, MS or Nintendo fan no one can deny the how popluar the Wii has grown since it's launch and how remarkable it has sold.
And there is no way anyone can deny how bad of a start the PS3 has had.
I love all systems but I do have a bitter taste for Sony right now but that isn't the PS3s fault, it's Sony's.
As of right now...I will be surprised with Sony can keep the PS3 going long enough to match what the Dreamcast did...and still have a cult following to this day.
Leshrac @ Mar 13th 2007 9:21PM
Ironically, while people apparently visit Nintendo online, Nintendo themselves continues to suck with their Wii online strategy. How sad...

It's because of the fact that you can manage all your Xbox live account info. and send messages through Xbox.com to 360 players and users. Also check out what is new on the marketplace. South park HD is awesome btw.
KiwiNick @ Mar 13th 2007 10:07PM
That picture looks like gameboy, but its SMB3?
What game is this?
Luke @ Mar 13th 2007 10:10PM
I think that the 360 or Wii will win, unless the sony drops the price this year dramatically and the system gets some good games.
Anonymous @ Mar 13th 2007 10:20PM
So far I play my 360 alot more than I play my PS3, but that is only because there are a ton more games for the 360. My Wii is gathering dust because since I finished Twilight Princess, I haven't played a single game on it. For all the gimmicks the Wii has, the games just aren't that enjoyable right now, and honestly I prefer a traditional controller to the Wiimote. That's my two cents.
Bob @ Mar 13th 2007 10:23PM
Chris did you even look at the Alexa data before deleting rarehero's post? I know you have a real problem with people disagreeing with you but deleting his post and getting all pissy is just petty. Seriously grow up man.
comtar @ Mar 13th 2007 10:33PM
That surprises me that less people are visiting the Playstation.com website, concidering the fact that it's the only place you can go to make sure you can play your old games on your system.
Hey how's that Silent Hill sound issue going? Still making that annoying noise when you shoot a monster? Meh.
Defenestrator2.0 @ Mar 13th 2007 10:44PM
I'm sorry, but I feel that this needs to be said.
IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE NEWS THAT JOYSTIQ POSTS, GO FUCKING ELSEWHERE. We don't want to hear you bitch about it. "WAAAH! JOYSTIQ IS TEH BIASED AGAINST [Insert game company name]!!!1" Did it ever occur to you that maybe, just maybe for a short while, there WAS no positive news coming out of Sony? And when they DO report positive news, you ignore it! If you don't like it, go troll some other website. Not that hard, people. Yet another simple solution that is too complicated for the stupid folk.
NintendoFanbot @ Mar 13th 2007 11:02PM
This is absolutely wrong. It shouldn't be this way.
Playstation.com is the one talking about merging videogames and art while Nintendo.com is only about wanting to have fun!
Night Elve @ Mar 13th 2007 11:19PM
Guys, some of you need to get laid. Geez ... It really does not matter who is on top, how site has the most visits per week and so on.
What's matter is that the console of your choice is giving you great time.
Sometimes these stupids fights between Fanboys are really tired.
Farmer @ Mar 13th 2007 11:47PM
Hey bob...I didn't look at the Alexa data but...I would have ignored anything Alexa anyway no matter who or what it favored. I know I'm not the only one out there either.

People go to Nintendo.com to seek answers. When is Mario Party 8 coming out, and how 'bout Super Mario Galaxy along with SSBB? Where can I find a Wii that doesn't even exist in retail? Will there ever be online gameplay? Will my Mii die?
Andrea @ Mar 14th 2007 4:36AM

whosmav @ Mar 14th 2007 6:25AM

"Give up, PS3 is going to be at the top again in a few years." - Storm9
Ah, hope springs eternal. Can you hear the fervent prayers of a million desperate fanboys?
Sony and Microsoft are both burning cash by the truckload (a fleet of trucks, actually) for gaming dominance, while Nintendo waltzes in and steals the show with some fresh thinking and ingenuity. And that is a beautiful thing.
By the time the PS3 actually comes close breaking even, we'll have Wii 2. Heck, maybe even Wii 3.
Try to lose with dignity, haters.

It's not Joystiq that's biased, it's their writers that are biased. Leave it to Blake Snow to write another anti-Sony article, as he has been for all this time.
People got this misconception that Joystiq is a news website. It's not. It's an opinion website, wrapped around different tidbits of news that writers who are pro or con a certain platform will spin to support their own views.
Vidikron @ Mar 14th 2007 11:30AM
Killer and Shagittarius gave the correct answers. People go to XBox.com because they can check their Live friends list and send messages. People go to Nintendo.com because they can't find Wiis or peripherals in the store. There's not much reason to go to Playstation.com.
Matt B @ Mar 14th 2007 11:34AM
There is nothing on PS.com I can't get from the friendly confines of the PS Store on the PS3. :D
If you sit back and think about it, the Wii has been out as long as the PS3. But it is the first spark for Nintendo in a long time whereas the ten's of millions of PS owners had already been familiar with the PS site.
It's just another "non-news" article to drum up a "We are the winner" song and dance that many of you crave for. It is biased and sensationalized to be misleading.

The fact you keep linking to that POS you keep trying to pass of a website is just pathetic.

navstar @ Mar 14th 2007 3:04PM
Anyone catch Attack of the Show's 'The Feed' segment on Mar 13th?
The news reader started off a story by saying, "The Nintendo Wii may not be as popular as the other consoles..."
What alternate reality is that show living in?
pixelator @ Mar 14th 2007 4:20PM
A Nintendo Fanboy said:
"By the time the PS3 actually comes close breaking even, we'll have Wii 2. Heck, maybe even Wii 3."
That'll be what, about another 6 months? Given the rate Nintendo has released 'the old is new again' revamped GBA systems and followed the Phat with the Lite, anyway.

Well, According to that Alexa link posted above, playstation.com is the only site going up overall in hits while the rest are going down overall. You can compare one spot in time each year and make a report, but it doesn't show you a trend.
