Isn't there a Silver, a White, and a transparent one? Or is the transparent one the one you say broke?

Sorry to interrupt the epeen measuring, but did anyone notice this from the article?

"Prior to this development agreement for Wii, GameSpy and Nintendo brought gamers wireless community options for Nintendo DS™. The service provided an innovative network for portable video games, allowing people around the world to link easily and wirelessly to play games. The partnership represented GameSpy’s first foray into portable games."

What do you make of this?

Or This...

“This partnership will expand our wireless community of players on Nintendo® Wi-Fi Connection,” said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. “Millions of Nintendo DS users have already logged on using GameSpy’s technology, and now Wii owners will be able to do the same in a fun and easy-to-use environment.”

“Nintendo has been an invaluable partner and we look forward to expanding our relationship with them in the future,” said Jamie Berger, Senior Vice President of Consumer Products and Technology for IGN Entertainment. “Our goal is to extend our ground-breaking work on the Nintendo DS to provide Wii users with the social, community and multiplayer tools that we believe will expand the online gaming experience to the mass market.”

O.o This isn't looking too hopeful anymore :(

@Slaziman

Yeah, the transparent was part of the modding I did. That ones dead and that picture, I believe is from pre PS3 and Wii. Damn, gotta truly do an update here pretty soon. Transparent is gone... which is a shame because before it died, it had a ton of really cool LEDs added. I've been tempted to buy a transparent button kit for PSP and add LEDs there but since I killed a PS2, last thing I want to do is kill my hacked PSP. So once they get a price drop, then I'll dick around with one.

@Vidikron

The white PSPs are damn nice. One of the few consoles that can pull the look off. The only two issues you'll have are those two small holes? Dust gathers in there and grey on white doesn't look too good. And dust gathers around the buttons. So to truly keep your console clean, you'll have to clean it internally once every 6-9 months. But then, I'm also one of those people who regularly disassembles his controllers to clean the dead skin from the ridges so you may not even notice it.

Oh trust me, in retrospect it was clearly a poor decision. Not only that but the screen barely works anymore from throwing it across the room while play RE2 on that beast. I get close to throwing it away many times but I keep it as a reminder that a successful franchise can't cross ALL boundaries and still remain successful =)

People are all up in arms about the Wii and online play when they're well aware of Nintendo's track record. When they got around to getting the DS online it worked just fine, I feel the same'll happen with the Wii. I'm not impatient.

And are you guys seriously getting upset with this summercamp character? Good lord. Doesn't take much, does it?

Has there ever been a poll here collecting the age groups of readers here? I'm very curious, because I'm 27 and sometimes I feel like the resident senior citizen reading most of the comments.

WHY NINTENDO WHY!"

Because Gamespy is less terrible than their existing online service for the Wii, which is nothing. And it's also 30x better than friends codes.

I love how summercamp comes on here to get all his daily attention (I've also seen him on NSider doing the same thing) and you guys all give in; hell, even I'm not helping with this comment. Anyway, I think game spy could help give Nintendo the boost they need to compete with Live and Home. Maybe if Mii's were incorporated it could be even better! And summercamp, there is a mute button on the headset, or you could just not play with the head set at all ;).

No one bothered to read the article

It basically said that GameSpy middleware is what powered DS Online, and that they shall be "Extending" that service to the Wii field

However, it doesn't mean that SOME improvements aren't on the table, it just means don't expect anything radically different from DS Online

And i really don't WANT random voice-chat, and i'm not saying that to be a Nintendo apologist, i fuckin' hate voice-chat, unless with friends/trusted people

You can ignore spammers when they're just typing, but when they're screaming in your ear or out of your TV/PC speakers, then its kinda hard

You and me both. That's why I get annoyed with Live so much. Sure, you can just mute people but the problem comes in the fact that, no matter what game I play, I'm muting someone new. It gets old. Fortunately, because BlueTooth headsets aren't given away with cereal, PS3's online service isn't rife with fuckheads. I expect this to change as price drops and people finally figure out you CAN use a bluetooth headset. Right now, I rarely have to mute someone. But also in each online Resistance match, usually only a handful of us have the headsets.

Well, I hope you all read the actual press release. (Maybe you would if you just ignored summercamp and his bigheaded crap)

If I read this correctly, the PR said: "it will provide multiplayer technology to game publishers developing titles for Nintendo’s Wii™ video game system. As part of an ongoing partnership with Nintendo, GameSpy has developed middleware technology to enable Wii titles to offer community features, such as friend rosters, advanced matchmaking capabilities and comprehensive rankings data."

Now try to tell me that that is not exactly what we got on the DS. I think Joystiq got so caught up in the moment that they forgot to really read through the press release. This could develop into a more robust online experience, but the chances of that are rather slim with Gamespy pulling the same stuff they pulled on DS.

All they have to do is get rid of friend codes. Then we would be fine. Wii Numbers were good enough. They were the half way mark. Individual friend codes would suck ass. I assume the "fake nda leak" may only ring some truth. Maybe we will see no friend codes for M and T games after all. I think alot of us would have been fine with just the wii numbers. Just one code per console, sort of like a phone number. Another thing that would have been way better would have been to have just one person enter the number and have the other person click a box with yes or no. It would have been totally fine that way. I guess we'll have to see. The worst thing that could happen is if there are friend codes. Even then at least there would be random matchmaking (which suck ass a little though). I don't think it will ever be on par with live but it could be very good if they pull the right moves. Just get us online battling each other already. I wanna kick ___ Lee's ass over there in asia :) .

Oh and did I read phantom hourglass multiplayer online? That would be so SO sick. DS would have a serious killer app if that works out.

@ Vampt Vo

exactly: technically, we did have a friend roster on the DS (if you can call it that), we did have matchmaking (some people think that sucked, but my matchmaking always ran as fast as it seemed to on Halo 2),

The only new addition would be ranking, online leaderboards were never found on DS Online, as far as i know (Only have 4 DS Online titles, MarioKart, Metroid, Final Fantasy III, and StarFox)

I don't know why you bought a Wii in the first place, either, if you can't figure it out right away. The Wii's strong point isn't going to be online. Anyone with half a brain could've told you that from the begining.

The reason I bought the Wii is simple, and the same reason why I buy any system - the games. Twilight Princess alone was worth the purchase, and we're looking to have a metric asston of sweet games coming within the next year. Do all of them need to be online? Hell no! Unless the game is a strong multiplayer experience from the get go (i.e. an FPS, a fighter, a racer, etc) it's not going to matter much.

"Could this mean the end of friend codes and the beginning of a beautiful online experience?"

No, if you'd bothered to read the press release, the DS's online also uses Gamespy technology, and look how crappy that turned out. The friends rosters, etc, are great, but I'd be willing to bet that they'll still be game-specific and friends codes.

Gamespy's service is crap... have you gone to the web site... it's an ad site with some gaming news. If some of my favorite PC games didn't have it build into the game I'd never use that service. Nintendo should have just made their own service up... it's not a long time solution to use gamespy or any third party solution on a console.
