Student-developed DS games available in Japan
Nintendo of Japan has announced a new program to make student-developed DS games available to the public. Every two weeks a new creation will be available to download for free from DS stations around the country. The games have you doing everything from communicating with aliens by drawing on the touch screen to shouting into the microphone. How about sharing the love with the rest of the world, Nintendo? Don't count on it. A Nintendo rep told Eurogamer the promotion is an exclusive Japanese market initiave.
You know, because the rest of the world hates free games.

Zell @ Mar 13th 2007 2:25PM
So cool! Shame they won't make it west. Perhaps it'll take off and spread.
Geo @ Mar 13th 2007 3:04PM
Hey jerk face # 1 do you have anything good to say.....?
summercamp @ Mar 13th 2007 3:34PM
American gamers wouldn't be interested anyways. These games don't have any guns and nascar.
I would never pollute my HDTV with Batsu-Box 360 filth

first off i love the: I heart NY carifornia.(i love how japanese cant say L)
and this is typical nintendo/japan bullshit. always getting more than all the western nations. not that i really care about fantasy anime cartoon japanese games featuring talking pink bunnies and magical unicorns. but seriously, do the japanese just think they deserve everything and we dont? kinda pisses me off considering everything we can get so can they but not the other way around.
and summercamp. exactly how does the fact that you dont have an xbox pertain to an article about student made DS games in japan? i have seen your same pictures 4 times and twice today. could you spare us the wasted space on the blog?
AC @ Mar 13th 2007 4:36PM
steve17: "but seriously, do the japanese just think they deserve everything and we dont?"
No. But I know you feel entitled to get every DS game ever made.
steve17: " kinda pisses me off considering everything we can get so can they but not the other way around."
What evidence do you have that EVERYTHING we get they can get but not the other way around?
steve17: "first off i love the: I heart NY carifornia.(i love how japanese cant say L)"
Is that because you hate them because they don't share everything?

@Summercamp
Bahahaha! You have your wii stand backwards!
CowboyGA @ Mar 13th 2007 4:45PM
Steve17,
I think this has more to do with the way Asian business culture compared to American. There's little profit to be had with this, so don't expect too many people to go out of their way to do this in the US until it's a guaranteed hit. And I'm not sure I get where the "deserve everything" comment originates, though if I could read Japanese I might be more inclined to want their games.
AC,
Any particular reason you're going for Steve17's scrotum?
Crono @ Mar 13th 2007 4:54PM
Actually, its probably got more to do with the fact they don't want to spend time and resources localizing student built games that they are giving away for free.
C'mon people's. Thinks about this.
RobT @ Mar 13th 2007 4:58PM
Am i the only one that sees this stuff eventually being offered on the Wii shopping channel once the DS/Wii conectivity gets rolling?

6. steve17: "but seriously, do the japanese just think they deserve everything and we dont?"
No. But I know you feel entitled to get every DS game ever made."
ummm....if you own a DS, you should be entitled to the full library of games that si available and not just a portion of them. there are probably twice the DS games(same with ps2 games) that are available to japanese then here in U.S.
steve17: " kinda pisses me off considering everything we can get so can they but not the other way around."
What evidence do you have that EVERYTHING we get they can get but not the other way around?"
well maby not EVERYTHING but i can name a few. multiple colors of the psp(here we only get black).
games is the biggest one. as i listed above.
and all kinds of stuff i cant remember. but it seems like every week they anounce something that is *japan only* you cant deny THAT!
steve17: "first off i love the: I heart NY carifornia.(i love how japanese cant say L)"
Is that because you hate them because they don't share everything?"
rather presumptous arnt we? actually i love the japanese. i love their culture(mostly), thier way of life. just about everything. its the one country i want to visit the most. that was in no way derogotive to them. and my comments werent directed at the japanese people. more the people that are deciding they dont want to share the wealth with the rest of the world. considering everything made here gets shipped to japan regularly. here we have to import japanese versions of everything that are either in japanese or translated by a 4th grade english student.
how about making your own points instead of trying to call me a bigot. cockshiner! lol, i love that word.

summercamp you're an idiot sell me your wii becasue you're a moron that doesn't deserve it
Bonnie @ Mar 13th 2007 6:22PM
I get that the titles will only be available in Japan, but will they also only be coming from Japanese students?
Brett @ Mar 13th 2007 7:09PM
You could buy an inexpensive flash cart solution and just download them from the net. You can get one for the price of two DS games, and since these student demos are being released freely you don't have to worry about being a pirate.
Props to Nintendo for taking steps to embrace the indie crowd. As much as they hate to admit it, the games industry would fail without them.
Brook @ Mar 13th 2007 9:12PM
Joystiq, you should give credit when you are pulling an image from another site to accompany your post. The picture is from engrish.com. The watermark is pretty clearly visible. It's a great site and incredibly funny. You can buy some shirts in their store. My favorite purchase, "I hate my life. Everyday I polish my revolver and shoot my head. Like a rock star."
Noodlez @ Mar 14th 2007 12:27AM
You would think that this sort of thing would be easily enough rolled out so that that games could be downloaded to the wii and then transferred to your DS. You then dont have to worry about special stations to recieve the content and it would then be available to alot more people.
Maybe that just makes too much sense tho :/
Viridium @ Mar 14th 2007 8:33AM
LOL, summercamp doesn't know how to use an apostrophe.
