For me I was in the queue to collect my DS phat on launch day. Although back then it obviously didn't have its phat moniker, as its little brother was but a twinkle in Nintendo's eye.

I remember it well, because I got through 4 DS's until I found one without a dead pixel. Thank god for friendly staff at Game.

My girlfriend got me my prized onyx DS lite for my B-day. So September 17, 2006.

Oh, and she got me New Super Mario Bros. Oh, and... hey. That's none of your business.

For me, I wanted a DS from day one, but my parents dont want me to spend lots of money on video games. Since we already had a gamecube, I wasnt allowed to have a DS unless i got one for free from someone. Yeah Right like thats gonna happen. However, i am a faithful reader of Nintendo Power and i always send in the little sweepstakes cards. Then, on one glorius day, i got a letter from NP saying that I had won the grand prize of two DSs and two copies of Polarium! I was supposed to get them in 4-6 weeks, but after like 3 months, they still werent here. So my dad called them, and the person that sorts the incoming mail was on maternity leave, so they hadnt sent any out. Then they sent it that day, and I had the system in 3 days, and I have happily had mine for about a year.

My DS was a birthday gift.

I'm a grade 9 teacher and I run a weekly video game club for my students. All of my students got together, pooled their money, and bought me a DS for my birthday.

They may or may not have all gotten A's for it.

Got the bug a week after launch when I play Wario ware touched.
Then got my DS phat for my birthday a month after launch day. It was pretty tricky tracking one down, they were sold out all over the place and I coul only afford it because I sold my GBA SP and used reward vouchers from Argos. Still, it was worth it.

My GF gave me my DS for xmas in 2005... Before then, I hadn't put much thought into any handheld in particular.

I initially wanted a PSP, but decided to stick with the DS after advice from friends... Never looked back.

I got mah DS phat the day it came out. My friend and I waited outside for the store to open. The moment I started playing the MPH demo, I was already kicking my friend's ass on it.

Picked mine up in late Sept. 2006. Knew that I had to have one for the camp out for Wii launch. It made the long, cold night a lot more tolerable. Plenty of other fans with DSs inline. Lots of multiplayer fun was had by all, and when most people drifted off to sleep I popped in FF:III. I may have come late to the party, but I love my DS!

I got a DS phat for christmas the year it came out. I got the bundle that came with super mario 64, the man purse ds phat case, and i think headphones or something.

I didn't particularly want it, because there were no good games at the time, but I was one ref away from getting my free photo ipod, so I didn't need one of those, and I couldn't think of anything else to ask for. Hell, I didn't even think anybody would be able to find me one because they were pretty scarce at the time (which is probably why I got the bundle).

Anyway, it sat around mostly unused until they started putting out actual good games for it like 9 months later (advance wars DS). I still haven't finished super mario 64. I just can't get into it.

I've never been much of a gamer, but my boyfriend surprised me with a coral pink DS Lite for Valentine's Day this year. I play it just about every day--I'm in love! It's even taken a backburner to our Wii, which is pretty impressive.

First DS original - at launch. Which probably explains why I still like Sprung so much.

First DS Lite - also at launch. Tried to get one early after hearing the Sears rumor, but that ended badly (and in a credit card claim to get them to refund us - a lesson was learned)

The second DS original was around December 2005, and the imported blue DS Lite was December 2006 (guess what I like to get for Christmas!)

I remember I used to love Advanced Wars II on the GBA, and found it on the shelves of best buy for 10 dollars (a long time after it was released). After playing the hell out of it, I knew I'd get the next one. I was on the fence about the DS at the time, but the moment Advanced Wars DS was out, I bought it that very weekend along with the DS. To this day, I still play it (with about 350 hours playtime) and it is still one of my favorite DS games of all time, tieing Phoenix Wright I and II

I can't remember when I got a DS off e-Bay with some games, later given to my younger siblings; but I did impulsively buy a DS Lite after Black Friday while searching for FF3 for my brother. Also grabbed EBA, Metroid Prime Hunters, Metroid Prime Pinball, Big Brain Academy, and a Link to the Past.

The Lite is what sold me. I didn't really "get" the original DS. Controlling games with a stylus while watching two screens didn't sound very appealing, and I thought the thing was ugly as hell.

But after it had picked up some steam and I saw some of the games it offered, I started to come around. The first time I saw the Lite I was convinced. I got mine on launch day, along with New Super Mario and Nintendogs.

I gave in and got my Onyx DS Lite about six months ago.

Reminded me of my original GameBoy experience, and that is a very good thing.

It sees more action than even my GBA SPs did.

Injured my arm.

Didn't care for it at first. Hated th phat screen quality, then the lite came out and got more interesting, then was sold when an arm got injured. a lot of games u can play with 1 arm

A lot of games will be funner on the DS too.. for example bejewled(zoo keeper is like it and on the DS). You don't have to press the arrow keys like crazy to get to the piece you want.

I bought my white Lite early January of this year, since I was going to spend a couple of days in airports over the next week and had pretty much played Advance Wars 2 to completion and wanted to upgrade. Advance Wars DS was sold out, so I ended up playing a lot of Tetris DS and Clubhouse Games instead (I did eventually find a used AWDS, however).

My GBA SP was prtty much just an Advance War Player, since I've never been much of a portable gamer, but I've already got a half dozen DS games so far - the DS Lite is the first portable system that didn't feel like a limited gaming experience to me.

Got my DS Phat in March 2005 so I'd have something to do on my trips back and forth LA from DC.

Since then I've been simply floored at just how great the games are for the DS. At this point the Wii is vying for the title but it still hasn't gone past the DS and won't for some time.

Though I get a bit jealous when seeing the DS lites out there, I'm sticking to my trusty and sturdy silver DS phat.

I was sold on the DS as soon it had hit the rumor mills (12-18 months(?) prior to launch). So, I was
the first to pre-order (3,one for each family member), first to pick up at our local EB. My title choices: Feel the Magic, Mario 64, The Urbs. Picked-up my DS Lite (just 1, everyone else had to get their own) on launch.

I need a significant other to buy me my gaming gear like a few other people here. ;)

I picked up the DS when the Lite hit the US in June 2006 and Circuit City was offering a free copy of Brain Age with it. It may be white (I'd prefer the black one), but it's been my best pal since then.

I'll admit it...I scoffed at the DS when I first heard the rumors of its release years back. "Two screens?" I asked, snickering at Nintendo's tomfoolery.

But, as the games continued to poor out and I saw others enjoying them immensely, I changed my mind. Yes, it can happen. I picked up my FIRST DS Lite back in September. My fiancee and I liked it a lot, but hated taking turns playing it. So, we bought ANOTHER one in February, once we could actually find one. Now we're happily playing Clubhouse Games, Battleship (yeah, it's still fun) and other selections in bed before we crash...

See kids, dreams do come true...

I picked mine up the Thursday before its release date. My Best Buy was one of very few who broke street date, and a friend of mine who worked there called me instantly, so I headed down and bought two during the few hours before they figured out their mistake. I was the first person on the IGN boards with a DS. I then picked up the DS lite on its US launch date.

I wish I could say I'd been there for the beginning, but I'd really never been much of a handheld gamer. Through an odd turn of circumstances, I got turned on to the PSP and played Lumines for... well, frankly, a ridiculous amount of time (love that game), but when nothing else piqued our fancy there, the man of the house decided to trade it off for a DS and some games. He does love the trading.

I must admit, I shunned it for about a month. I just wasn't interested. And then one day, I was bored and he convinced me to try Kirby: Canvas Curse. After complaining for about ten minutes about how much I hated handhelds, I shut up and played. And played. And played.

I haven't really stopped since then. I can't tag a specific date, but I think it was late 2005.

Wow, awesome to see I made the DS Daily again :-P. I may not have been there day one for the old DS (Dog-ugly... looking back, that really is a good way to describe the original DS) but I was there day one for the DSlite. It's an amazing system, how the DS should have designed in the first place. It's like completely replaying older DS games going from the phat to lite... it's more comfortable to hold and everything is more vivid thanks to the light.

i bought the japanese version of the Gameboy Advance before it was available in the U.S. i then traded that in on launch day for the original DS (great trade in value for my GBA). i then traded my original DS in for the DS Lite on launch day as well (another great trade in value, i think they gave me like $75 for it).

one thing i've learned, if you trade in your old system within the first week of the new one, you get wayyy more money for it.
