Halo 3 Legendary Edition to command a legendary $130 pricetag
Originally rumored to cost a measly $99 US dollars, Microsoft has reevaluated the pricing for the Legendary Edition of Halo 3 putting it more in line with its namesake. The new "estimated" retail price is a legendary one hundred and thirty dollars. Ah, that's better. So, what does the dedicated Halo nerd get for his $130? First, the luxury of owning an item that is promised to be released in "limited quantities" only. Next, two supplemental discs with a "Making of Halo 3" documentary, featurettes, and an AV calibration tool on the first and remastered "cinematic material" from Halo 1 and Halo 2 (a refresher course, if you will) and exclusive Red vs. Blue and This Spartan Life content on the second. Deep breath ... and you get a collection of Halo 3 storyboard art.
If you don't want to spend $130 on a game (you obviously never owned a Neo Geo), then there are two other opportunities to give your money to Microsoft. Similar to games like Gears of War, Halo 3 will come in both Standard and Limited editions. The Limited edition will fetch $70 and include the first disc from the Legendary Edition, as well as a Halo "fiction and art book." We're not sure if this book will be available outside of this offer, but we imagine some Legendary owners won't like getting shorted on it. Don't care about the goodies, just want the game? Try the $60 Standard Edition. You could even get two and still bring it in for less than the Legendary edition.

if i can squeeze my head into that helmet, i'm there!
Crono @ Mar 16th 2007 1:38PM
prepare to be dissappointed
No game can live up to the hype that has been created for this game.
Derbeste @ Mar 16th 2007 1:40PM
geez....
Stories like this make me glad I spend about 12.95 per month on gaming.
Grindstone @ Mar 16th 2007 1:41PM
Shut up, Crono, dirty cynic. Gears did just fine living up to its hype.
I'll be buying the game only, the rest just becomes worthless over time anyway, and takes up space.
Eric @ Mar 16th 2007 1:41PM
The helmet will not fit on your head, unless you suffer from microcephaly.
GJM @ Mar 16th 2007 1:41PM
I have a whole stack of NEO GEO games and two NEO GEO consoles so, yeah, this is like peanuts!
:p
Vidikron @ Mar 16th 2007 1:41PM
You would have to be a pretty hardcore Halo fan to buy that. I think I'd rather just spend the money on Halo 3 plus another game.
Neal @ Mar 16th 2007 1:45PM
Im in for buying the legendary and the normal.
Keep the normal one, sell the legendary version to some idiot on ebay.
FTW
Crono @ Mar 16th 2007 1:45PM
I don't think it did, since the latest internet fad is making fun of Gears of War. I sure hope Halo3 is longer than a 4 hour game. Otherwise, it'll dissappoint.
I'm not saying its gonna be a bad game. I'm just saying it doesn't matter because the hype is astronomical for this game.
shelton10 @ Mar 16th 2007 1:52PM
Do you guys remember that halo 1 feel. the game just had a smooth unique feel to it. And eye candy everywhere ya look....360 will produce lots n lots o eye candies. and the halo 1 feel they say, "we got it back" wont be on top for ever in the 360 life span but it will leave its mark.
Mark Wilhelm @ Mar 16th 2007 1:50PM
I'm buying it, just like I bought the Limited Editions of GuildWars and GuildWars: Factions. It was worth it. The Halo 2 Limited Edition? Not so much.
I've got $130 to throw around, how about you guys?
shelton10 @ Mar 16th 2007 1:52PM
make it a life size halo figure like they have in bungie and u got a deal
Vidikron @ Mar 16th 2007 1:53PM
@10
Ummm... no. As I said, my $130 would be better spent on two games rather than 1 game with a helmet. What would I do with it anyway?
Jack of No Trades @ Mar 16th 2007 1:54PM
@13
Make you dog wear it.
Huricos @ Mar 16th 2007 1:58PM
I would put it on teddy and call him Master Teddy, or Teddy Chief, I haven't decided yet.
Raynre @ Mar 16th 2007 1:59PM
I preordered the $130 version, but I intend to wait about a year without opening it up, then selling it on eBay.
I think the $60 version will do me just fine until then. =D
heretrix @ Mar 16th 2007 2:00PM
Meh. People drop more than that on impoted anime bullshit. Stop bitchin...It's a cool collecible for the fans. Would I get it? No. I don't even like Halo all that much. But it's about time somebody puts more thought into the packaging of a game than just a dvd case and some half assed 3 page manual.
Rock on Bungie.
rfom @ Mar 16th 2007 2:05PM
Is this going to be a full game or a 5-hour game like Gears?
Anyway, even if it sucks like Halo2, the multiplayer would be good....but then, you dont get MP anyway do you.
So
360 premium (USD399)
Halo"GREATESTEST GAME EVER, HONEST"3 (USD130)
6-year MP (USD300)
361 with HD, HDMI, 120GB (USD499 minus USD20 exchange for obselete 360)
USD1308: PS3wii plus enough left over for a Bravia
(If you dont get it becuase your brain has been rotted playing too many alien shooting games on 360, its called sarcasm)
LunarDuality @ Mar 16th 2007 2:05PM
Damn. $100 and I was there. Add another $30 and now I'm seriously reevaluating this choice. I mean, I'm paying $150 for Guitar Hero II, but that's with *two guitar controllers* and a free gig bag.
Yikes...
NeverSage @ Mar 16th 2007 2:06PM
Fuck that, /$60/ is too much to spend on a game.
And Crono, there's a lot of hype for this game? Halo 2 is generally considered "alright" by most gamers. The hype you speak of must be the hope that it'll be better than the second. Not a difficult goal to reach, imo.
JodyAnthony @ Mar 16th 2007 2:07PM
"I've got $130 to throw around, how about you guys?"
WE ARE ALL VERY IMPRESSED!
zippyzee @ Mar 16th 2007 2:18PM
i'll pick it up just for the hi-res halo 1 & halo 2 cutscene dvd.
samfish @ Mar 16th 2007 2:10PM
Crono is 110% correct.
Also:
Milk-Milk-Milk-Milk-Milk-Milk-Milk!
Man, and you all say that Nintendo fanboys will buy anything...

- "And Crono, there's a lot of hype for this game? Halo 2 is generally considered "alright" by most gamers. The hype you speak of must be the hope that it'll be better than the second. Not a difficult goal to reach, imo."
Huh? "Most" people think Halo 2 is just "alright"? Is that why it has a 94/95 average at most cumulated review sites? Halo 2 was/is a great game....yeah there are gonna be people who didn't like it, but "most" think it's actually a great game. Where are you getting your "most" from?
Arturo @ Mar 16th 2007 2:14PM
don't know if i want this anymore...i might have to go change the preorder from this to the regular version...
Kevin @ Mar 16th 2007 2:22PM
Metroid Prime 3 better come with a Metroid.
Virtua Fanboy @ Mar 16th 2007 2:27PM
I am a BIG Halo fan and I will NOT be buying this stupid shit, lol. I'm sorry but I really like Halo's story, the characters, ect... but I'm don't need it to become something I can physically touch. It's a video game and I'll be buying the "just the game" edition. Same as I did w/Gears of War lol.
Intentless @ Mar 16th 2007 2:32PM
Some people like collecting things like myself and some do not... Please stop with the "those who buy this are stupid" and or "this is crap" everybody has something they are into that others would consider a waste.
Genius @ Mar 16th 2007 2:33PM
Pass. I didnt buy a 360 to play GoW and I wont buy one to play this either. They'll both wind up on the PC anyway.
kabes @ Mar 16th 2007 2:34PM
Don't want it? Don't buy it. I know, its ass backwards logic but try it. And this isn't a problem for Gamers With Jobs® FYI.
Genius @ Mar 16th 2007 2:35PM
Amazing thing is, I have a job, and yet... I still dont want it. Impossible to imagine isnt it!
kabes @ Mar 16th 2007 2:39PM
"Amazing thing is, I have a job, and yet... I still dont want it. Impossible to imagine isnt it!"
yes it is impossible to imagine, since we all know Microsoft is holding a gun to your face and forcing everyone to buy the legendary edition!
duh.
dark @ Mar 16th 2007 2:42PM
OH COOOOOOOOL!!! Now I can finally be the Halo guy. Aw thats so sick.
Derbeste @ Mar 16th 2007 2:46PM

Jack O.N.T.:
That has got to be the funniest thing you have ever said.
Samfish:
"Milk-Milk-Milk-Milk-Milk-Milk-Milk!

WTF are you talking about? What does this have to do with Nintendo at all?
Seriously....you're so dumb you belong on a talk show.

"I don't think it did, since the latest internet fad is making fun of Gears of War."
Actually, I thought the latest internet fad was searching for Gears Of War fanart and counting the days until the Cease and Desist letter is issued. Perhaps I was wrong...
Arturo @ Mar 16th 2007 2:53PM
"yes it is impossible to imagine, since we all know Microsoft is holding a gun to your face and forcing everyone to buy the legendary edition!

actually no, i can imagine it. =D
Daryl @ Mar 16th 2007 2:53PM
GoW is 10 hours, and I've probably played over 60 hours between all the co-op and difficulty levels.
The game rocked.
Just cause Crono says somethings a fad doesn't make it so!
Hater @ Mar 16th 2007 2:55PM
@Grindstone
Crono's right.
dark @ Mar 16th 2007 2:57PM
Nintendo should sell a Mario head or Luigi head when Galaxy comes out. Oh maybe a Yoshi head would better. That would pwn Halo guy. Yoshi is teh pwnage.
Crono @ Mar 16th 2007 2:55PM
LOL sheppy.
Hey jack, can you start another flamewar plz?
Shmil @ Mar 16th 2007 3:00PM
i would love a yoshi head, or a metroid, but i don't want other companies doing this so often that spending over 60 becomes natural for gaming
dark @ Mar 16th 2007 3:03PM
Well, Mario, Luigi, DK, Yoshi, Link, Metroid..... are all classic. Thats why its okay for them to make it. People would like them better.
GJM @ Mar 16th 2007 3:05PM
"Actually, I thought the latest internet fad was searching for Gears Of War fanart and counting the days until the Cease and Desist letter is issued. Perhaps I was wrong..."
The one-off toy thing was rediculous, but going after someone for selling art based on your IP is something that is reasonable to want to stop.
Pikachelsea @ Mar 16th 2007 3:06PM
@40:
No, they shouldn't. I don't want to see 14 increasingly expensive variations of a videogame that just take advantage of consumers. I can't believe people would actually pay $130 bucks for this. Like Shmil said, I don't want to see anything like this become more acceptable. Games are expensive enough as it is.
I'll take my $49.99 Wii games kthx.
dark @ Mar 16th 2007 3:10PM
@44
I KNOW. But wouldn't it be cool to be Yoshi. That would be soooooo coooooooooooool. I can wear it outside and people would be like freakin out.
sheppy @ Mar 16th 2007 3:14PM
"The one-off toy thing was rediculous, but going after someone for selling art based on your IP is something that is reasonable to want to stop."
It was a single painting. And I know it may seem frightening, but painters may actually want money for their work. God forbid. As it stands, it's more like fanart than a legitimate commercial endeavor.
I mean, fucks sake, billy. I turned down two people who wanted me to draw some GOW artwork in my style. Sure, it would have only been $50-$70, but I'd be getting a letter right now too. What about the legitimate artist who take commisions at anime conventions to draw licensed characters? Hell, even GOWs appearance on Penny Arcade can be considered a violation.
I mean, where exactly should we draw the line? And if Epic keeps getting a freepass on this shit, I know a ton of Devart users will suddenly find themselves paying legal fees.
GJM @ Mar 16th 2007 3:14PM
"Like Shmil said, I don't want to see anything like this become more acceptable. Games are expensive enough as it is."
No matter how popular the $130 version is, I can't see how this will make standard versions of games more expensive. And again, no matter how popular the $130 version is, I can't see them making $130 versions of anything but the most popular games (i.e. Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy, GTA, etc). I think fans of those series would welcome $130 *versions* of those if they came with a worthy amount of bonus material. No?
GJM @ Mar 16th 2007 3:19PM
"It was a single painting. And I know it may seem frightening, but painters may actually want money for their work. God forbid. As it stands, it's more like fanart than a legitimate commercial endeavor"
I am an artist myself so I know the viewpoint. If you went to this particular artist's site though and saw his work, I wouldn't call anything at his level "fan art". If you want to sell to your buddies for $50 or $70 that's fine becuase what can Epic do really? They'll never know. No harm no foul. But to put it on your professional website? C'mon now. I'm just saying you can SEE where they might be against it. Yes it's one painting now, but if the guy makes big bucks off of it those paintings will be coming out of the woodwork.
