Halo 3 Legendary Edition to command a legendary $130 pricetag
Originally rumored to cost a measly $99 US dollars, Microsoft has reevaluated the pricing for the Legendary Edition of Halo 3 putting it more in line with its namesake. The new "estimated" retail price is a legendary one hundred and thirty dollars. Ah, that's better. So, what does the dedicated Halo nerd get for his $130? First, the luxury of owning an item that is promised to be released in "limited quantities" only. Next, two supplemental discs with a "Making of Halo 3" documentary, featurettes, and an AV calibration tool on the first and remastered "cinematic material" from Halo 1 and Halo 2 (a refresher course, if you will) and exclusive Red vs. Blue and This Spartan Life content on the second. Deep breath ... and you get a collection of Halo 3 storyboard art.
If you don't want to spend $130 on a game (you obviously never owned a Neo Geo), then there are two other opportunities to give your money to Microsoft. Similar to games like Gears of War, Halo 3 will come in both Standard and Limited editions. The Limited edition will fetch $70 and include the first disc from the Legendary Edition, as well as a Halo "fiction and art book." We're not sure if this book will be available outside of this offer, but we imagine some Legendary owners won't like getting shorted on it. Don't care about the goodies, just want the game? Try the $60 Standard Edition. You could even get two and still bring it in for less than the Legendary edition.

"No, they shouldn't. I don't want to see 14 increasingly expensive variations of a videogame that just take advantage of consumers. I can't believe people would actually pay $130 bucks for this."
WTF? The Japanese have been doing this for years..And some of it is REALLY cool. It's for the fanboys, let 'em have it.
Hater @ Mar 16th 2007 3:32PM
@Daryl
Man, if the game didn't have all the flaws it has I would agree that it was great.
Why should anybody have to "wait for a turn" to get into melee combat with anybody? Stand in line so that you too can have your turn to attack an enemy.
sheppy @ Mar 16th 2007 3:27PM
I'm not a big fan of the painting either. To me, it looks either like a pastel with horrid blending, or a paint by number. But in all honesty, people have been doing this for ages. It's one of those grey areas that, should you pursue, you suddenly find your way into the black. If this isn't okay, then the stretches are not either. Suddenly webcomics can come under fire because of ad revenue generated. Suddenly a console mod on Ebay with Gears logos lit gets a lawsuit because it was unauthorized. And what happens if a 3D artist out there, somewhere, makes a tutorial on how to make a Locust? It's a slippery slope and if Epic pursues it, so will other companies.
Therein lies the danger.

Man, this might not be a popular opinion and you obviously know different people than I do, but Halo 2 sucks the big one. That game is awful. If all you do is play online then it's at best ok. Otherwise they made a ton of mistakes with it. The dual weapon wielding is awful and the story is all over the place and let's not talk about the friggin
plant.
Pretty much everybody I know liked the first one better regardless of it's repetitive nature.

i got the call today from game stop ill pay it too because the beta will let me know if its good and if so then 130 is not that bad. I may get it and hold on to it and still buy another regular edition to play.
NeverSage @ Mar 16th 2007 3:44PM
@Nate
Yeah, maybe "alright" wasn't the right word. Halo one just set a high goal and Halo 2 didn't quite reach it. They seem more on track this time around though. I was trying to get across that the hype is no where near Gears of War proportions. Everyone already KNOWS Halo 3 is going to be good. At least no worse than 2. It's like... a fact. That just doesn't feel like hype to me.
sheppy @ Mar 16th 2007 3:47PM

Who cares if there is a $130 version of the game? Most people will buy the $60 version. The hardcores and people with money may splurge on the geek edition. Big deal. Japanese games, Baseball cards, and Star Trek have been milking the fanboys for decades.
Can't help but laugh at Crono's comment. Gears of War didn't live up to the hype because it was "4 hours long". lol. It was Game of the Year you twit. That is called living up to unreasonable hype and even surpassing it. Just cause it gives you nightmares doesn't mean it isn't a fun game. ;)
Halo3 is a proven franchise with tons of fans. It has been in development for ample time and has a lot of resources dumped into it. Its success is key to the entire platform. It is going to be a good game.

What do some of these comments have to do with the post??
Halo 3 Legendary Edition is obviously for Hardcore fans and collectors of the series, not for the average gamer. I think it's pretty cool, though I wouldn't buy one myself.
I have no doubt Halo 3 will live up to all the hype. Bungie has had years of feedback from fans that play regularly. That's why we've seen numerous amounts of updates to the playlists. They also have a roadmap to work with on what worked with Halo 2 and what didn't. They are taking their time testing new features and polishing this baby.. more so then they ever did with Halo 1 or 2.
Also, anyone who thought Halo 2 was mediocre or was overhyped really didn't get into the online and just complained about the story. Halo is known for it's online community, not single player campaign. If it were just a FPS it's novelty would have worn off long ago. But this time there is definitely a lot of care going into development for Halo 3... including the BETA. This will give developers time to test out bugs, features, playability, etc. And also give developers feedback from gamers. GOW is a great game and they didn't go through this much trouble.
Anyone who sides with Crono on "overhype" obviously never got involved with Halo 2's online. Bungie is well aware of the bar they set with Halo 2 (which sold $125 million worth of copies on it's "first day" by the way). From everything I've observed in publications, videos, interviews... they are taking the steps to make this the biggest FPS franchise of all time. This game "will" live up to the hype and people will be playing it for years to come.

lol - it seems that Microsoft has all you schmucks willing to pay for anything! Even a FPS which pales in comparison to HL2 - too funny. That's almost half the price of your vaunted console!
And yet you think it's okay to charge this...

Hater @ Mar 16th 2007 5:03PM
@rulez
The problem is that the Halo franchise isn't that big of a success when you look at the number of units sold compared to the number of consoles sold. Also bear in mind that there is no differentiation between console vs PC vs Mac title sales.
XBox 1: Just over 24 million units
Halo 1: Just over 5 million units
Halo 2: Just over 7 million units
While it's the most successful franchise on the original XBox, it's questionable how successful it really is. Less than one quarter of XBox owners bought Halo and less than one third of XBox owners bought Halo 2.
Compare this to something like the GTA franchise, a truly successful franchise title, and it's barely a blip on the radar.

So basically you're saying all the bad parts of Halo 2 should be ignored? So if you ignore all the bad parts and only look at the good parts, then the game is good? That's not a valid argument. You have to look at the whole game to decide if it's good or not. Halo 1 had both a good story and good multiplayer. Halo 2 really only has good multiplayer and an alright story. Therefore, 2 aint so hot.

but it's nice to see the option, because while this isn't too appealing to me, the fan extras are pretty rare in these parts, and would be nice to see the option in more games.

Don't twist my words around. I never said that at all. And your argument sucks ass because Halo 2 played online for one.. Halo 1 didn't. Second it had more and better maps with more features. The only complaints I have ever heard are the story didn't hold up as well as Halo 1 and some fans of Halo 1 were turned off by the duel wield. That's it.
Look at the reviews pal. By many publications and web sites ...they are looking at "the whole game" and gave it great reviews. I don't know where you're getting Halo 2 isn't so hot... the Halo franchise in the gaming industry is as stamped as Star Wars is in the movie industry.
The entertainment value of Halo 2 surpassed 1 and put the Halo franchise on the map. FPS usually work better with a mouse and keyboard... with the exception of the Halo series on a console. The playability, vehicles, weapons, and fun factor were all there. I don't know what you're trying to argue except the fact that maybe you personally prefer another series (Half Life, RFOM, UT, whatever).
My point being Halo 2 has a large following (sorry to disappoint you too Hater... but it's true) and Halo 3 will capitalize on it's success with more features, bugs fixed, better options, and a bigger fan base... period!!
Paul @ Mar 16th 2007 7:28PM

Storyboard art? Like, ACTUAL storyboards? Like, from the development process? Or prints? Because if it's the real deal, HOLY SHIT, I'd be PERFECTLY willing to pay 130 smackers.

Just take a look at what the Collector's Edition for Halo 2 is going for on eBay and what the poor bastards paid for it new, and then think about dropping $130 for a plastic head and a game disc.
GoonieGooGoo @ Mar 18th 2007 8:01AM
As a collector of Video Games.....what you should appreciate most about these collectible editions is simpler.....WE ARE FINALLY GETTING THEM!!
It is completely optional...
For years...we non-japanese gamers coveted color manuals, special editions, pack-ins...etc....
We finally get them....and there are people conmplaining???
Granted a majority of posters here are not old enough to remember unboxing their atari 2600.....or having to deal with disc-swapping on their APPLE IIC or having to type Load "*",8,1
If you don't want the Legendary Edition....don't get it. For those of us that like to Collect....we'll buy it...and appreciate it.
