Hey Ludwig, you put the Wii above the PSP for this weeks sale even though the PSP sold more. You might want to fix that before "people" (i.e. Sony fanboys) start seeing this mistake as Joystiq being "the bias"[ed].

Speaking on part of my friend who LOVES halo2 but couldnt get into gears, "gears of war isnt anything like it."

He like jumping in Halo2.(cant jump in Gears. Just wall hop and dodge roll) He likes the different combos of weapons you can use.(gears doesnt offer very many weapons and doesnt let you use "dual weilding". He likes spawning instantly and getting right back into the fight when you die. (gears you die, and wait for the rest of your team to die before the respawn.)
He thinks Halo2 feels faster and takes more skill.

Take that for what you will, hes a Halo fanboy.

I think Gears is better. *shrug*

These would actually mean something if Japan was the center of the gaming universe, which it isn't.

@mo - Yes, I have a 360 and would recommend getting one. The unified online service(Live) and the great games make it an easy choice. Might want to wait till May to see if any of the rumors of a black version with a larger HDD and HDMI come true. If you find a need for any of that.

Ha. I saw that pigeon when I was guarding the press room on Friday. I
was sad because my shift was 2-3 and I missed the end of the expo,
but the pigeon brightened my day.

So the PS2 sales are finally dying out
Feel kinda sad...all those good old consoles
And the best thing about last gen was: all just think which exclusives you prefer - no worrying about the console itself, because all of them were close in graphics and price,

Maybe, if you are a genuine lover of games..this is the time to grab ALL the last-gen consoles and some fine old 2nd hand exclusive games. My picks:
GC + RE4, Metroid, F-zero
xbox1 + PGR2, Halo1,2, Ralli, Ninja Gaiden
Dreamcast + Shemnue, Soulcaliber, Jet set radio
PS2 + Ico, MGS3, FF10, GT4, GoW, DMC3
what do you think? ALL for less than the cost of one console from this gen. Mouth-watering

@ 13

They don't release American Sales weekly like japan. And the ones they do release you've gotta pay for. If you want it that bad then pony up the cash.

WOW, I just added the Japanese sales chart and the USA sales charts for the month of February, given that Japanese charts available were Jan 29th-Feb25th. No sales were available from Feb26 into March.

XBOX360 = 248,338
PS3 = 209,149

This fight for second place is allot closer than most people think.

Yeah, but you forgot Poland.

But seriously.. there is also UK sales, seeing as the PS3 isn't available in UK yet.. and UK is a larger market then Japan. And even beyond that is Africa, Australlia, and outh america... It's funny how we seem to think the the entire gaming world is US and Japan.

Why do these sales charts matter? A few assumptions can be made to decribe Japan without these meaningless charts.

1) Japan is obviously a Nintendo ball hugger. The Nintendo Wii and DS are king.

2) Sony's Playstation 3 despite being the largest console, having less than stellar software compared to both Nintendo and especially the Xbox 360, and being very expensive continually sales every week.

3) Japanese people do not like the Xbox brand (American) despite seamless online play, a great gaming library (the Japanese RPGs are about to start flowing), great media features, etc.

4) Xbox 360 is fighting a losing battle in Japan but is kicking ass everywhere else in not only hardware sales but especially software sales.

So Joystiq show us some NA sales charts along with some software sales charts.

yay for the gba micro! I know i'm probably the only one, but i love mine.. and play it almost every day on the train.

PS// as for handhelds.. japanese people spend insane ammounts of time at work.. and spend most of the rest of their time commuting to and from said work.. so its not surprising that handheld sales outweigh home consoles.

Adults play handhelds while commuting.. kids are the only ones who have time to play games at home!

@ LongShot

I find it hilarious that people continuously accuse Japan of being xenophobic....and we in the western world aren't?

Anyway, it's not the matter of being xenophobic. If there is very little (apart from Blue Dragon) to appeal to their audience, why should the Japanese buy 360's? This argument is getting very boring!

The Wii & DS is not only doing well in Japan - it's the same everywhere. To accuse Japan of being Nintendo huggers is just foolhardy.

Rocky, look up the term "Gaijin"...

The Japanese are very Xenophobic, as such are Americans, still to base almost your entire purchase on whether or not it came from your country is fool hearty, this goes for people who drive cars as well...

MS needs to bring back the lounge, it was a great idea and it help bring a little acceptance in Nippon...

People don't realize the Japanese ARE NOT XENOPHOBIC

Many American brands do very well over there

Japanese PCs are powered by Windows, Nike and McDonald's are also have considerable presences over there

And remember when GTA: San Andreas topped the Japanese charts?

The Xbox brand just doesn't sell in Japan, much like how the TurboGrafx16 flopped in North America while being the Cat's pajamas in Japan

And the overall analysis:
DS Lite is the WINNER
PSP is slowly descending from its Monster Hunter 2 charged spike
PS3's Gundam charged spike is over
and the market seems to be in decline, for now at least

People who say the reason the 360 and xbox are failing is because they are american should be banned from commenting because they clearly aren't intelligent enough.

The fact is when Blue dragon was released (a game that appeals to Japanese tastes) the 360 saw a massive spike in sales. However it is ridiculous to expect a single game to be able to drive a consoles sales for a sustained period of time. If the 360 had more games that appealed to the market it would sell better. I expect once more Jrpgs are released sales will again spike.

''Xbox 360 is fighting a losing battle in Japan but is kicking ass everywhere else in not only hardware sales but especially software sales.''
Console sales for feb in N.America.
''DS - 575,750
Wii - 379,250
PS2 - 323,500
360 - 257,500
PSP - 189,500
GBA - 165,000
PS3 - 133,750
NGC - 26,250''
http://www.vgcharts.org/amonthly.php
Im sorry what? The 360 is no where near kicking ass everywhere else. It is performing better than the original xbox however it is still a huge distance behind the wii in monthly sales. If you use the console comparison at vgcharts you can that at this point in its life cycle the 360 had sold 1million units less than the wii has.

Wait, why is this funny? Do you even know what Gundam Musuo is? Let's put it this way. Mix the popularity of Mobile Cult Gundam (from my knowledge, the only Gundam series excluded from this fanservice is Seed and Seed Destiny) with the popularity of the Dynasty Warriors series, and you have an instant success.

People tend to forget Japan gets some damn fine mecha games.

Pay attention, people. The US charts came out *two days ago*, for god's sake. Do you expect Joystiq to post them along with every single entry, or something? Do two minutes of searching yourself before you complain about not having the US charts.

PS/ Gaijin doesn't really have any xenophobic meaning.. its simply a shortened form of the word for "foreign person".

"UK is a larger market then Japan"

No it is not. The UK game industry states how much money is spent in the UK on games and how many games were sold. It is a bare fraction of what the US and Japan spends.

Also here is the thing most game development companies are housed in Japan and the US. Most European, Canadian developers are offshots of US and Japan developers.
