I submitted a question about Game demos to the nintendo forums, and here are what some of the replys were

"the internal flash memory is not large enough for demos (or at least alot of them).

maby ones that load directly from the site into the RAM and then as soon as you shut down the demo is gone, like the NES games in animal crossing. though thats not a great way either. I'd rather have demo disks, like the one that came with the preorder for one of the GC games (the actual game name eludes me at this point :P

"I had heard a rumor before the Wii was launched that you might be able to use a usb hard drive like you would the internal memory."

basically all of them say the wii's flash memory couldn't handle it, but Demo Discs could. I sure hope Nintendo does figure out somthing.

I really don't see the Wii ever doing playable demos for Wii games. They definitely could have a channel that featured news and screenshots about new games, with streaming trailers. In fact, I'm amazed that they don't already have something like that.

Playable demos just seem impossible though, given the amount of internal storage the Wii has. Now, playable DS demos could be possible, and that's something I would love to see.. a channel that could connect to your DS and let you download small mini-games and demos. That's another thing that I'm amazed they don't have already.. considering how many people out there already own DSes.

I have little doubt that the Wii's internal storage COULD handle demos, but only one or two at a time. Complete games were stored in less than the GameCube discs' 1.5GB. A Wii game demo could weigh in at less than 100MB, or roughly one fifth of the Wii's internal storage capacity. The 360's demos often weigh in the 500MB to 1.0GB range, but those are pushing the visual content at lot heavier than the Wii would need to.

Often, the 360 demos are a means of wowing players with visuals. The Wii demos could be more like tech demonstrations on how the control is used. Example - you'd only need to pack in one hole for a demo of Tiger Woods 07, and it could probably be pressed down into some real tiny size. Most people are looking to see how the swing works, not to get hours of play out of a free demo.

im wondering when nintendo is gunna start using the USB slots for keyboards, external hard drives(that would make demos work very easily), headsets, SOMETHING.

@ 4

It may happen eventually, but with the Wii using BlueTooth, i don't see why it would need to use the USB ports for anything other than Thumbdrives or HDDs

Some Wii games could easily fit in to Downloadable demo size, like all the Wii Touch Generations titles (Sports, Play, Brain Academy, Wii Music). You could also make REALLY small demos (say for a Brawl demo, just include 4 characters and one stage)

And never discount the possibility of streaming content, which would be subsidized by all those VC profits

The idea of demo DISKS turns me off, small things like demos should be downloadable, its like a waste of silicon

but a DS download channel would kick ass, too

Weren't they talking about, when this thing was still called the Revolution, DS demos being transferred from the console to the handheld? I even recall, I believe it was Reggie, saying that you would wake up in the morning, and your console would have it's download light on indicating you had a new demo, message, or Mii from a friend. It's bound to just be a matter of time...

Badtz said it (but I'll put it another way): demos = huge size/long downloads. Nintendo won't do it, and I can't blame them.

Did Reggie not say that there would in fact be demo downloading for the DS through the Wii? I sort of remember that from the 2006 E3 or some other announcement pertaining to, at the moment, Revolution.
