So we knew that the PlayStation 3 1.60 firmware update would add the much requested background downloading function, and we'd heard rumors that background downloading wouldn't work while gaming, but thanks to a press release from Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (we hear they've got something going on this week), it looks like the system will be able to download stuff while you're playing games. Apparently, the system will allow you to queue up six pieces of content from the PlayStation Store while using other functions of the system, notably playing games and watching videos (Blu-ray?). These downloads can be tracked using a new "Download Management" menu under the XMB's Network icon. While at first you may think the ability to just queue up downloads while gaming doesn't necessarily mean those downloads will proceed, IGN confirmed with Sony that "you'll be able to play games offline while downloads work in the background, and if you hop online your queue will simply pause until you disconnect." We'll be sure to test out the functionality tomorrow when 1.60 drops.

Come on X-Boxers! Spin this to be negative. You guys are awesome at that.
Serious question: Once Home launches (which includes the "achievement" style system) what exactly does the $50 for Xbox Live Gold get you that the PS Network doesn't?

Queueing != downloading so don't get your hopes up. Personally I really don't see the big deal either way. It's much better in 1.60 than it was in 1.50 and I'm sure Sony will improve and refine their firmware more as time goes on.

Why can't either console download while playin online? I do it all the time on the PC, as long as it doesn't throttle your connection you will be fine, even then its really hard to download enough that you can't do anything else online at the same time. there wont be bittorrent on the PS3 or Xbox anytime soon, and thats the only thing that ever eats up enough resources to even notice ingame.

My 10 yr old brother did this for hours with Habbo Hotel and I couldn't believe it. I'll be busy playing games with my 360, thanks.
And the Trophies? Again, no interest in loading up somebody's trophy room. How will this translate to cool statistical pages like top360tag.com ? At least that's kinda useful...

@18: Sony did come up with the idea of achievements, it was implemented in various forms in Spyro and Star Ocean. This has been discussed before.
What bugs me is that Sony didn't make the queue handle up to 7 d/ls instead of matching 360's 6 precisely. It would have made these posts so much more exciting:
PS3FB: Oh you can only queue 6 items on your 3-shi**y? I can queue 7!
X360FB: Of course on PS3 there aren't even 6 things you would want to queue up, so it doesn't matter anyway.
etc. etc...

achievements per game is a natural extension of an arcade Hi-Score; building it into the whole console platform, in every game from arcade (also pioneered by ms) and retail, that you can access in-game at anytime.

Man, every single "bullet point" that the 360 fanboys had against PS3 has been proven wrong through time, like this thing about downloading while playing (and before, games costing more because they are on blu-ray, Sony will never surpass Xbox LIVE, Sony will never make innovative games, PS3 will cost $800, PS3s will break just like Xbox 360, games will come on BD-9, etcetera). I hate FUD.
And to the naysayers, Home is much better than LIVE because it has an interesting 3D interface, it is not game centric (but it does have a lot of games), it goes more in line with the "customization" microsoft always promised (and delivered with "faceplates" and proprietary HDDs and OS), you can use your own content and share it with others, way more social, and it's free of charge.

As a PS3 and happy 360 owner I look forward to this add on. Come on people the PS3 is not as bad as some claim but it does not have the games of the 360 yet. I got my 360 day one and my PS3 day one too (as well as most other home consoles for the last decade and 1/2. Each system has its + and - but what it comes down to is games.

Oh, and about gamerscore and trophies... I prefer to show unique virtual objects that display my gaming skills in an interesting way, rather than just a number in a non-interesting interface. It's nice that Xbox LIVE is relatively interactive, but it should be interesting too. I hope Home gives LIVE a run for its money so they make LIVE free.

Wow, like 10 comments saying "wait until xbots spin this into a negative" without a single post saying Sony's addition of background downloading is a bad thing. That's silly.
Sony's entire online strategy should be to try to make it as close to Live as possible. Once it pretty much the same, then they can think about putting their own touches on it.
As a 360 owner, I want Sony's service to catch up because it will probably save me $4 per month. As it stands, MS has an argument for why you have to pay for their service, it is vastly superior. If Sony had them matched, they would look like arse charging for something you can get free elsewhere.
*waits for someone to say, "but you can, Sony's network is the same and free!" To which I give a blank stare and feel pity for all the teachers that will have to spend extra time explaining everything to said individual.*

I think that this is great for the Playstation side of things. I remember when they fixed the 360 to do this it was a really cool feature.
As far as "how I justify" spending .14 cents a day for Live, let Daddy worry about that. Trust me there are still quite a few reasons but I'm not gonna name them here because you've heard them a thousand times anyway, lol.

I know $5/month is a lot to some of you... It would mean one less cheeseburger combo a month or something. In 2008, when Sony reaches 6 million online users (or whatever XBL is managing now), I hope things continue to run smoothly.
But don't you think the network costs are being passed down to the consumer somehow? What developer would find bearing the brunt of that responsibility on their dime attractive? Maybe they'll take a few shortcuts, or join the crowd and jump to Xbox 360 where there's money to be made. It's a market 3 times the size! MGS is coming, I feel it.

Bootsie. Arguing with you is no different than arguing with a 6 year old or a mentally handicapped person. You are that out of touch with reality.
"Home is better than Live, and it's free" is the dumbest thing I've heard all week. They aren't even the same thing. Live is an all-encompassing online service for the Xbox brand that basically links together everything that your system can do.
Home is a neutered Second Life who's only link to gaming is that you interact only with PS3 owners and you put trophies in your apartment from games you play.
You are comparing apples to hamburgers here. Don't you understand that? Are you that out of touch?

boots,
again, what's special about live is that it's *always available*, no matter what you doing, playing a game, watching a movie, whatever.
HOME isn't going to be like that, it will be a separate environment you load into. you can't just meet someone playing resistance hit a button and see everything about them, then go back to shooting aliens. that makes *all* the difference.

I'm all for Sony having a great online setup. MS even said themselves that they may consider making Live free or discounted if Sony gets their shit together and it's still free. That's a lot of money to give up that they're used to though.

When you use all the features Xbox Live has to offer you could say it makes all the difference. For someone like me, who only pays the $50 a year to play games online and download demos, the PS3 network appears to be a nice addition. It comes down to the same useless argument PS3 fanboys make about the $600 console being worth it. "BUT I DONT NEED OR WANT THAT FUNCTIONALLITY"... Now if Xbox Live silver allowed you to play the games online.. that would be a whole nother story o.o

Serious question: Once Home launches (which includes the "achievement" style system) what exactly does the $50 for Xbox Live Gold get you that the PS Network doesn't?"
I can spin this negatively. Pretty much everything that has come out for the PS3 has been borrowed from other systems that its no longer funny.
The motion Controller was taken from Nintendo. Sony even said it was childish.
The point of having two systems was taken from MS. Sony said it was just to show how money hungry MS is.
The new @Home is nothing more then just Second Life. Since @home is going to be "free" at this moment in time that just means your going to have commercials and spam where ever you go. So far after a year on XBL with my 360 I have yet to get one spam message.
Trophies are nothing more then just achievements.
And what I get for my $50 a year of XBL Gold I get continues online game play with the servers never being closed ala Konami and EA sports did with the PS 2 games. Last I checked I can still play wacked on XBL even though no one else plays (mind you i do not play the game)
So tell me again what does your FREE online give you?
Oh and btw Housing ya they took that from MMO's which are pointless
