choice is good for the fact that the companies are fighting for your dollars, thus maybe making better games, thus is better for the consumer. However, choice is bad in the fact that I am poor and all the consoles have games that I want that I can't afford :(

Honestly, I'm not quite sure the choice of platform is really -that- good for the industry, overall. As a business model, it makes great sense for the game companies ('no matter which console is successful, we win! Plus combined profits from all the versions!'). But 'back in the day', if a developer wanted to produce for a system, they (usually) had to make a choice to support that system. The game companies' successes were tied in with the console for which they produced. As such, they shared a bit more of the responsibility for the success of a console.

More clearly put, they used to have a greater responsibility to make games that were not crap. They could not rely on combined sales from multiple platforms, and if, for example, a company was heavily invested in the SNES, it was to their benefit to make outstanding games for the SNES to get more people interested in the system so -all- of their games would sell. The game companies had a greater need to make system-selling games. Not to mention that a single-platform game is more likely to really leverage the unique strengths of the system (this is really apparent when you look at multiplatform games which have been ported to the Wii compared with games made for it, though this difference was less pronounced in the past, I think).

There are definitely some good games that are multiplatform, and I'm not thoroughly against it, but I think that there is a reason that most of the outstanding games out there are only available on one console...

Then again, maybe everything I'm saying makes no sense at all... I'm uber tired @_@

Well when a system is built AROUND the control scheme, I find it hard to call it tacked on...but hey, this is Joystiq, a place where all three systems have thier own fantasy lands.

You have to choose between Blu-ray on the PS3, playing alone with voices on the xbox, or having a great time with your RL friends on the Wii.

I had to do this yesterday with TMNT... HD, 5.1, and Achievements won out over Wii Remote and 9 exclusive bonus games... and yet, I will always wonder what I am missing out on.

I couldn't agree more. Developers are getting lazy these days. How many times do they need to release the same games? Quick, let's go sell all our sports games and buy the exact same game with slightly better graphics!

The choice of consoles used to be supported by the games, and now most launch titles are just rereleases of games for other platforms. All the decent, exclusive games end up being delayed for years and never deliever what was promised in the first place. I'm looking at you Fable and Kights of the Old Republic. Great games, but lost too much content over the many years of development.

Personally, I'm glad that these companies are going multiplatform...because then *I* get to choose the system and the bells and whistles that I am interested in. Personal choice is a powerful thing.

Well thank ya gramps for the peek into videogame history. "One dominant system" well I come from germany and that sounds somehow familiar. But more choice made for more fun as it turned out. You simply have to decide what kind of person you are and what you can afford.

Ahh and well the price tag and entertainment value makes the big difference ... 360 Premium = 500$ (2 Wii), PS3 700$ (~3 Wii) ... sweating for the first time in years playing tennis in your underpants 250$ and priceless.

Jack - Red Steel is way better than Halo 3 could ever dream of being. The control scheme is so tight and spot-on that I ACTUALLY thought I was in the game. In fact when I left my apartment and I saw a guy down the hallway I grabbed for my samuri sword that wasn't there because I was in reality, not the game. The game just sucked me in and made me realize that Halo 3 could never compare and that Red Steel is really the only first person shooter I'll ever need. In fact I think I might sell my 360 because it's just an xbox and a 56k modem duct taped together. Red Steel is destined to become the best selling game of all time I think. It's basically just because of the jaw-dropping graphics, incredible enemy A.I. and INTUITIVE control scheme.

oh look at me, Im the playstation 3! i cost twice as much as my closest competition, yet arent half as awesome! all my exclusives are going away to the xbox 360 leaving me a worthless pile of electronic feces! but i'm SHINY and have a blue laser diode inside of me, so I must be grand!

And look at me, I'm the xbox 360! I break down even quicker than the playstation 2! People call me the 'new dreamcast' but I'm actually closer to the 'new 3do', you know, I have a few diehard supporters, but in the end I am still pretty shitty.

But look at me, I'm the Nintendo Wii! I have fun games for me that people actually enjoy playing! Oh, and I am affordable both for the consumer and the game developer! Watch as I skyrocket to success leaving the PS3 and 360 to wallow in their own ineptitude!

I usually say the best console is the console with the best games, but I'm just a silly flip-flopper because I've prefered 3 different companies over the last 3 generations.

The Wii is clearly the best for non-gamers, as that has been Nintendo's openly stated intent all along. The 360 is on top right now for your console gamers if you just go by game quality alone.

You cannot compare a million dollar seller like the Halo series to a thousand dollar seller like Red Steel. That game is so bad it should have been bundled with the console.
