I quit playing Test Drive because of the retards that I would come across. No one cares how high you are and stop ramming me off the road when I am trying to drive to my next mission.

shenanigans...

I think the "punks" should stay in private matches so those of us that don't ruin eachothers experience can enjoy the full potential of service. The Jerks shouldn't be the "priveleged" ones...

Boys and girls, can you say "schadenfreude"? Oh, others than the ones who study psychology and the ones who speak German, you can't? Well it's pronounced roughly like this - SHAH-den-froy-duh.

The short definition is taking joy is the misfortune of others. Everyone partakes of it to some extent - don't deny it. For an example that would please most (if not all) here, imagine if Jack Thompson got disbarred. It would be a misfortune for him, but I challenge you to find the gamer that wouldn't be pleased about it.

It's just that the people who get addicted to it become griefers. They hew to the German proverb "Schadenfreude is the best kind of joy, because it comes straight from the heart."

In regards to my earlier post. There is a difference between talking sh** and being an annoying greifer... Thin line but its there.

I found it amusing when a gaming mag had one of their editors be a griever for a day and they discovered several interesting things.

1. Despite his best efforts, he got more negative feedback on Live due to playing legitimately (sore losers) than he did as a griever.

2. Most people considered the griever behavior hilarious, egging him on, until he took the lead. Then he was considered an annoying jerk.

3. Cranking Bel Bev Devoe through his mic is generally not looks down upon.

So pointless and immature, but the people who do this already know that. One reason I'm seriously hoping the Wii doesn't get voice chat. I have absolutely no desire to have profanity constantly screamed at me. I'm no masochist.

What I find interesting is the fact these people have no shame and freely admit, "Yeah, I'm an asshole" in many comments here so far. It's incredibly selfish behavior.

And I agree with whoever said they don't buy into that "I'm nice in person but an asshole online" crap. I don't either. Lots of people like saying online is different. The pervs on those Dateline: To Catch a Predator specials use that line ALL the time, but it doesn't stop them from being convicted. Truth of the matter is, especially in this day and age, online is so closely integrated with the rest of the world excuses like that don't hold water.

Often one's online 'persona' reflects who they really are, much more than the mask they hide behind in person.

@35

Did you just call me a pansy over the Internet - because I don't enjoy getting TK'ed in BF2?

Seriously?

Neal, I suggest you put your helmet back on and hope your caretaker doesn't ban you from the computer.

That would suck.

I think the fact would be you can't genrealize peopel based on any single attribute.. Action defines a degree of a person..

This entire idea that the net shows a real person's atitude is bull crap.. because you can fake anything online.. it's abstract at most.. A person on line is as real as another person you see in person.. It's just a different side under different condiction.

I feel the same way about voice chat... voice chat with Metal Gear Online sucked.. either you can hardly hear the people.. or they just want to 'chat' .instead of using a device meant for that... like a phone.. I'm quite happy with just staying focus on the game.. and treating everyone like an advance AI

"Cry about it, baby. Get some real friends and you won't have to deal with people being idiots online. Or, setup your own online game with friends only. People you know wont fuck things up. Lets face it, being an asshole is sometimes fun, so people will do it."

This is typical from an asshole.

Hrmmm...

When this topic gets discussed, few people ever take a look at the flipside, so here ya go, nubs!

1. Most people absolutely SUCK at video games.
2. Some people are extremely good at video games.
3. Even the people who do not absolutely suck at video games, do absolutely suck compared to the extremely good players.
4. When the average video game sucker meets up with an excellent video game player, one of two things happens. A. The average video game player loses at whatever game, and realizes he is not very good. Possibly the better player is respected for his skill. Possibly the weaker player is inspired to try harder. This happens very infrequently. B. The suckwad player accuses the good player of cheating, having no life, being pale and fat and a nerd (har har har), and what have you. This happens MOST EVERY TIME!

So now being a great player of video games, and meeting with insults, and accusations, how would most people normally react?

Add to this now that this is an everyday occurrence for many good vidiots. Do you suppose they wish to be friends with the masses who tease them and accuse them? Hell No! They want to make everyone else who is terrible at video games feel like they are terrible at video games, and feel like crap, because for the most part, these average players are complete assholes (to them).

Not to mention the FACT that the first widely played internet video games are from id software, and had built-in taunts, and derogatory comments were not only acceptable, but required.

I have played video games since there were video games. I have played online video games since there were online video games. I have played 3 separate games at a professional level, and have attended CPL/WSVG 4 times. I have studied people's anonymous behavior towards me in online video games. I have alternately said nothing (text/voice chat), been overly nice (even when getting static), and been a complete jerk (even when getting niced). I have aliased as a female, and different ages (with help from my wife and children). This is what I have found.

If I am destroying everyone in a game, no matter how nice I act, I get the same insults and accusations. If I am aliased as a female and destroying everyone, you can't even imagine how rudely I am treated. If I alias as an older person, I get extra crapola. If I act like a dick, it does not change anything. If I act nice, it also does not change anything.

No matter how I act, if I am playing a game at my skill level, the only people who are not going to give me static are the people who are also extremely good at games, and that's if they have not been too soured over their own treatment (or have gotten over it).

I would have to say that most people that you would consider a "griefer", are just excellent at games and jaded by the treatment they receive for being so.

Suck it, newbies!

I could almost agree with that assessment but the cases that applies are rare. Usually, the grievers are the sucky players. The ones who know they are facing snipers in Battlefield 2 and yet go running through tall grasses with reckless abandon and scream obscenities when I drop em like a prom dress. The kinds who absolutely refuse to guard the rear of a base and complain as I set remote bombs on the more commonly used vehicles. The kinds who lead with the same damn combo over and over again and get pissed off when, by the second time I've seen it, I'm countering all their shit in DOA4.

I will readily admit that sportsmanship on online games does need to improvement (why I only play with fellow clanmates) but it's not a reflection of skill in skills but rather people being assholes. Don't try to dress it up in pretty clothing.

I won't say I'm incredible at games but I'm not bad. Those better than me do get the respect they deserve unless its obvious they are cheating... I never greif only retaliate to the tards that either suck and talk crap or cheat and act like the shit...
usuckatvideogames remember there is always somebody better than you...

It seems only noobs conjugate on these boards... its ok though, I'm bringing you a voice of reason.
It truly sucks to do all that work then have to start over cuz some A-whipe decides to pull bullshit anticts.
how the fuck can you say that? hard work?? youre playing a game, not working. The loss of your gear is irrelevant, you will stop playing the game at one point or another so whatever the fuck you accumulated is worthless unless you ebay it. Its a MP game, its about interaction with other people, not with npcs. That a-whipe is the one who makes the game fun, and the same person that makes your gears "valuable" - if he wasnt there to take them then they wouldnt be worth a shit.

There are so many different versions of the same game (any game), ill focus on two: the retarded noob version, and the leet version. Contrary to what most of you believe, your maxed out stats and gears dont elevate you to the leet version, you are still mentally stuck in the world of a retarded noob. The leet version is about having fun, not stacking up worthless e-property. You do this however you want, without regard for others, the mentality for this lack of regard is simple: its just a fucking game, how much damage could you really do? and if you did do any damage, its probably not your fault, but the fault of the lamer who feels victimized. The lamer's mind is weak, he has taken NO ACTUAL LOSS (pixels) but insists on whining about it, to allow such a simple matter to affect you is pathetic. The leet d00wd is, on the other hand, enjoying himself and creating conflicts, having major battles, playing with peoples heads, getting adrenaline rushes and allowing other players to experience the rush as well (on the loosing side... though its still nice). Leet game is about psychology, its nothing more then exercise in strategy, the game played is nothing more then a virtual plane to apply this style, which can be used universally in almost any game (and real life) with slight adjustments.

It is so fucking retarded to claim that pking/griefing is based on real life anti-social behavior or some other mental defect. On the contrary, following the line of sheep collecting herbs and fishing (just to get jacked for them on the way back to the city [not in wow, they have a retard safeguard to keep customers]) is based on real life stupidity. Im sorry to insult most of you, but I guarantee that the same people who complain about griefing know very little about the world they live in; ignorant of geopolitical issues and main concepts like peak oil etc; getting their news from fox/cnn/msnbc, and actually believing every load of bullshit they read (eg Dr. Liao). How about this, next time you want to know about griefing and pking ask somebody who knows, a REAL griefer that plays a REAL game, not some wow-lamer who is so restricted by the gamecode that he has to apply ludicrously lame strategies just to have some fun, and not some stupid doctor who knows very little about mog mechanics and attempts to apply primate hierarchies to something very different...

now i realize i might be talking about something completely different then what you are complaining about.. but then, you aren't really complaining about griefing, you are complaining about young/stupid/annoying people... they're everywhere in life, and assuming that a griefer has to be one of them is a little bit ignorant.
